This video is beautiful and completely describes how my sister and I feel when we are trying to decide between "a real job" and what we love. You have such a lovely sense of humor, but I really enjoyed this and felt inspired and recommitted to my art. Cheers!
Law is cool for you and everything, but you won't be defending good people all the time. What about corrupt corporations or suers or murderers and adulterers.
HAS ANYONE bought this one!! i want it sooo bad!!! I love this painting! and I no IMm watching an old videol, but that painting is so... I dont even no the word, but Im likstening to the story, and I almost want to cry because I dont know what I want to to do in life, and my parents are pushing me one way when I really want to go another.
i think you did the right thing by leaving law school because it seems to me as though you are incredibly passionate about art. you are an amazing artist. keep up the good work! i never leave comments on videos but this really inspired me. im currently in the same position you were in with the hole college thing and its really stressing, but your video helped me see things a little clearer. thank you :)
You are the most beautiful creature Ive seen in a long time. I know you really have no choice, but keep doing your thing. As for today, you have inspired me in a way I have not felt in a long time.......and for that I thank you. Johnny
I feel that the person trying to break free is losing the battle. The way the hair cuts across the body makes it look as though the person is being constricted by their own self. They are consumed by their conscience.
In my opinion, neither side is winning in that painting. But I suppose I am seeing myself in it. It's so unclear what the sides are and it's so unclear what the battle is.
Hey Val, I can totally relate to this story. I've always been obsessed with music and the different emotions that it can evoke; so of course it is my dream to be a music producer. More specifically, I wanted to play classical piano. But due to "encouragement" from family, I ended up majoring in Computer Science. I know, boring right?
Well after 3 years of that, I finally got fed up and changed my major to Radio-Television-Film. As a result I am over $25,000 in debt with Student Loans... but at least now I am one step closer to realizing my dream.
Taking a chance on what you really want to do in life is always the better choice in my opinion. Besides, the world would be a much darker place without you and the beauty your artwork brings into the lives of others ^_^
Hey Val, I really enjoyed this video. I love the story you tell, and its inspiring to everyone out there who is doing one thing, while dreaming of another. Though you tell it in a modest tone, it IS a heroic story. You did what you felt was right, even though it brought about uncertainty, and fear.
I have a similiar situation - I already have a degree in political science, and at this time I feel like I want to focus on being natural - on being myself as oppossed to jumping directly into a political science career
val this video shows me that what i did (had the same struggle as you did, though i was pushed towards medicine instead of law) is the right thing, because the truth is, you gotta be true to yourself, rather than doing what we dont like just to get a better payed job but always wonder about the happiness i might have gioven away..THANK YOU
You again have made a great video, but I too can relate to the situation described. I got lost in my family's expectations of who I should be, and lost sight of what I wanted to be. My revolt was a long time coming, but I am now 29, and I am a camera man, not a doctor or a lawyer. I have a job that pays the bills, and I am happy with my life.., and not worried about the 9to5 slog.
Wow...you just won yourself another subscriber. I was really into this video. I am really glad you did what you did in the end. You really have to be true to yourself. Sure it would make more sense to others to go to law school, but it would be stupid to do what you were doing just because everybody else is, or everybody told you to do it. You are not a lawer, you are an artist.
You're welcome. At the risk of sounding weird and creepy, I feel the need to tell you that your voice is very soothing, and that you're a very beautiful woman. Stay true to yourself, and god bless.
Your last couple works have been phenomenal. You're getting very good at not only putting emotion onto the canvas but having that emotion reach out and grab the viewer. Keep up the very good work!
I am glad you followed your heart Val. However, I am stuck being a person who fits neither in the art world or comfortably in the academic world (despite what everyone else thinks). However, I guess I have to make the choice to do something!
No o o o please please, I use to like the background music that you used to use xD... like the one you use when you are explaining your painting:D like that one, in this video first part you used like a rock one, please i like the background music that you had before....it was really enjoyable...just think it for a bit FOR ME YOUR FAN.....
I felt the same way when I decided what to do wit college. Making it in the Art world is not easy, no matter how good u r. it suckz ^^x I luv that painting!!! it reminds me of final fantasy ^,^ that piece must cost alot aye
1)I thought I was the only person that caught this.
2)Art school is not for everyone. Unless you ended up really good but that alone won't do you any good sometime so it is questionable if Vals' art is actually selling or her looks is. Don't get me wrong, a few of her paintings is deserving of the responses she got but seriously, this has got to be the ugliness thing I have ever seen. No offense Val but that is just my opinion.
Maybe Val was trying to mix color on canvas ? Guess one can get away with that on oil painting. I like water color, so I never change color during the painting.
Really dude.... have you had your vision checked lately. Comments like this serve but one purpose... cut someone down to falsly lift one's self up. Get a life.
I did not go to art school as you know and I never did oil painting, so I thought maybe that is a technique in oil painting b/c I saw some artist put a lot of color on canvas to crate textures. You can't do that in water coler. Does that make sense ? What a life should I get ?
zinc2o has an opinion and should be welcome to express it but, it could stem from meanspiritness. This painting and others clearly show talent and professional training. Understanding of color and light, with meaning adding value. Texture is very integral to many of her paintings. Texture is both subtle and bold depending on the painting created, but it always seems to be their. Val has a sound basis upon which her art is created. Ugliness is subjective.
So what if Val has "looks"??? I'll admit she's a force to be reckoned with on the cuteness scale but I care about what is in her heart and her gift of making serious things fun to watch.
Don't make MrNotSoSerious have to rebel against himself and get serious!
I have to agree with you MrNotSoSerious. Of course Vals beauty adds to her paintings. Yet she also has a wonderful way of self expression. Both in speach and in her work. Beauty also of course is in the eye of the beholder. Personaly I love this painting. To me it leans towards a medieval gothic look. Whatever you do, do not rebel and get serious. Keep some humor in life.
now for a real comment...thankyou so much for the videos...i'm also val from hawaii and i love art. i got a kick out of you cutting your hair...been toying with the idea myself and now i gotta do it!! you look great!
This is probably the painting that connected with me the most so far. Great job! It was really cool to know what you've gone through for your art too. You made the right choice. ;)
Val, your hair cutting was pretty surprising. :) I hope you didn't cut your beautiful hair, but... Well, Val with a middle-lenght hair would be pretty astonishing too. :) Warm hugs for my second favourite artist... Sorry, Vincent Van Gogh was first. ;)
It's all YOUR fault, I'm starting to fall in LOVE with you and i never even talked to you, GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, I going to try very hard not to watch your cute little video's
Oh my God what an amazing painting! I'm not exactly an art buff or anything and I've probably never appriciated good artwork as much as I should but I can honestly say that this is the first painting I've ever seen that has literally taken my breath away. If I had the money, that would be mine! Great work Val.
This is called "Val's" Art Diary so it's about Val, not about other artists and their mumble jumbo!
What does that have to do with Val? Val is her own person, if the path isn't there for her she will make her own path! just like the video artist statements!
Great for you Val, inspiring all the shadow artists out there, - people probably mean well but they generally are ignorant about the arts and believe it is a path to poverty when in fact it can be a great foundation for many lucrative careers like architecture and industrial design, look at the people movies and television employ, look at the stuff the Franklin Mint mass produces but if you just want to paint pictures and sell them in cafes you'll probably starve but maybe not- who am i to say.
Great painting Val. It's beautiful Maybe one of my favorite paintings to date. I can relate to the inner torment. I long to be a photographer, but am afraid it will not pay off in the long run. Time will tell.
Your hair is gorgeous, I think the only thing that compares to how beautiful you are is your amazingly talented work. I think that in your battle, the side that won was your true self, that maybe Law School was a tool to show you that you were meant to be an artist.
Going to study business can be a great asset if you later want to work as an artist it can only help. One of the most successful artists I know realized while taking Economics (which he hated) that he could make alot of money doing art and now he does just that. The reason why many artists are "starving" is because they have no business sense, however they say an MFA is the new MBA because businesses need imaginative innovative artistic people's ideas in order to compete in todays world.
There are at least 3 horrible misconceptions about art that are rooted in the past. They are: (1)Artist's must suffer for their art to be any good. Along those lines, (2) Artist must 'starve' and (3)Artist doesn't deserve to be paid. As Val would say: 'Nonsense!'
Those are misconceptions and generalizations about artists but actually come to think of it many great artists did have tragedy or challenges Frida Kahlo, Toulouse Lautrec, Warhol, look at quadriplegic Chuck Close; not one bit of self pity. Gaugin's life ended in disaster, Egon Schielle, ah Rembrandt transcended tragedy and rendered the human spirit sublime.
Yes, a lot of the 'classic' artists and renaisance painters did suffer and I believe that led to the present mind set for a lot of people. These great artist paved the way and made it easier for present day artist and we owe them a debt.
Yeah the misconception that artists shouldn't be paid, nonesense,
There was a collective art show here about the Exploitation of Workers in The Third World
the organizers expected all the artists(who don't have extra $) to donate their time and resources for this show for free. One artist said the gallery was exploiting the artists for publicity gimmick (it wasn't a charity event)- soon many of the artists demanded fee or they would pull out of this "good cause".
Ooh. You really got her there, Pohomo. I'm sure you're highfiving yourself right now, dancing around your computer, happy that you've done your part to spread hatred, stupidity, and intolerance through humanity. Congratulations. May your efforts echo back upon you ten fold.
You asked which side is winning in this painting. Well, I love the colors gold and yellow, so I see the weight the figure is under, but I think he is waiting and knows there is something good coming, the gate or prison will open soon.... anyway, you asked. love ya! great vid and nice story.
thanks so much for this video, i am feeling alot of pressure from my parents as well to study what they want. The thing that makes it harder is I don't know what I want. I am going to do some soul searching, inspired by you! Thanks
At 2:32 something floats down over your right shoulder (your right)thats very faint and strange looking and seconds later the canvas falls. Val, could you have a little paranormal something going on? I watched it several times. It caught my eye immediately. Not trying to spook you but check it out.
Valentina!!, Why did you cut your hair?!, definitively wasn't expecting that, but I have to accept you look cute!, I will miss your curly hair though, about your painting great as always!, I will continue, in spanish, con respecto a tu decision de perseguir tu sueño nunca dudes que hiciste lo correcto, fue una decision dificil porque ya sabias que era lo que tenias que hacer y lo hiciste!! te admiro por eso. Keep up the great work!
This just crossed my mind. Do you watch the "Real World" on MTV? You sort of look like Coral from the one of the cast member, but a friendlier version.
I went to engineering school but didn't have the courage at that time to walk out :( Nice painting. I feel it is well balanced and represents both the side pretty well. btw, Is that a hickey on your chest? I couldn't help noticing :P
nice to hear one more epic episode of your life :)
I love the she-male or he-female painting too.. except for the too "politicly correct" lock of hair covering the breast maybe.. doesn't seem natural lol
Hey Val, thanks alot for posting my little clip of the studio that produced the high definition CG animated movie The Wild, which was edited with Final Cut.
If you read in the side bar its about how a mere cartoonist who goes to school for animation can end up directing multi million dollar movies-no University degree required.
Yeah you need university educated computer scientists and such to do a sophisticated production for example, why even lawyers are required. Maybe what I meant was even doing something like drawing cartoons can lead to great success Possibly universities will be consulting you for your expertise despite not having a university degree but you usually don't get there by letting other people tell you what to do especially if you really have no passion for it.
glad u decided to go to art school. i was in a similar situation but i didn't follow my heart. it's not too late to change i guess...but it would be a waste of 3 years...i wish i would've had the guts to walk away like u did.
interesting decision

ENOUGH!
Val can easily make a painting "pretty" if she wanted to.
Painting is not about making things "pretty" its about making things appear how you want them to
The purpose of the painting was to portray the inner "conflict"
Famous paintings like The Scream aren't meant to look "pretty", they are meant to "express", that is where the beauty lies...
Val is on the same level as Munch!

Oh my God what an amazing painting! I'm not exactly an art buff or anything and I've probably never appriciated good artwork as much as I should but I can honestly say that this is the first painting I've ever seen that has literally taken my breath away. If I had the money, that would be mine! Great work Val.

ENOUGH!
This is called "Val's" Art Diary so it's about Val, not about other artists and their mumble jumbo!
What does that have to do with Val? Val is her own person, if the path isn't there for her she will make her own path! just like the video artist statements!
MrNotSoSerious 4 years ago
I think i mighta missed my flight. But theres just something about the way you paint.

Your hair is gorgeous, I think the only thing that compares to how beautiful you are is your amazingly talented work. I think that in your battle, the side that won was your true self, that maybe Law School was a tool to show you that you were meant to be an artist.

Great topic.
I'm going through that "tough cookie" right now.
I am (was) seriously thinking about going into art, too, but I'm going study business instead, at least for now. Hard decision >.<
Great painting :)
reader340 4 years ago
Going to study business can be a great asset if you later want to work as an artist it can only help. One of the most successful artists I know realized while taking Economics (which he hated) that he could make alot of money doing art and now he does just that. The reason why many artists are "starving" is because they have no business sense, however they say an MFA is the new MBA because businesses need imaginative innovative artistic people's ideas in order to compete in todays world.
roodeey 4 years ago
There are at least 3 horrible misconceptions about art that are rooted in the past. They are: (1)Artist's must suffer for their art to be any good. Along those lines, (2) Artist must 'starve' and (3)Artist doesn't deserve to be paid. As Val would say: 'Nonsense!'
solohans1 4 years ago
solohans
Those are misconceptions and generalizations about artists but actually come to think of it many great artists did have tragedy or challenges Frida Kahlo, Toulouse Lautrec, Warhol, look at quadriplegic Chuck Close; not one bit of self pity. Gaugin's life ended in disaster, Egon Schielle, ah Rembrandt transcended tragedy and rendered the human spirit sublime.
roodeey 4 years ago
Yes, a lot of the 'classic' artists and renaisance painters did suffer and I believe that led to the present mind set for a lot of people. These great artist paved the way and made it easier for present day artist and we owe them a debt.
solohans1 4 years ago
solohans
Yeah the misconception that artists shouldn't be paid, nonesense,
There was a collective art show here about the Exploitation of Workers in The Third World
the organizers expected all the artists(who don't have extra $) to donate their time and resources for this show for free. One artist said the gallery was exploiting the artists for publicity gimmick (it wasn't a charity event)- soon many of the artists demanded fee or they would pull out of this "good cause".
roodeey 4 years ago
An artist has to be extra vigilant that they don't get taken advantage of.

On second thought it was your arm that knocked over the canvas. But the floaty thing is still there.
Lorrierks 4 years ago
At 2:32 something floats down over your right shoulder (your right)thats very faint and strange looking and seconds later the canvas falls. Val, could you have a little paranormal something going on? I watched it several times. It caught my eye immediately. Not trying to spook you but check it out.
Love Ya!

Hey Val, thanks alot for posting my little clip of the studio that produced the high definition CG animated movie The Wild, which was edited with Final Cut.
If you read in the side bar its about how a mere cartoonist who goes to school for animation can end up directing multi million dollar movies-no University degree required.
llerdy 4 years ago
Maybe not, if your reel is good enough... But there are several excellent schools that offer degrees in computer animation.
AmateurAstronaut 4 years ago
Yeah you need university educated computer scientists and such to do a sophisticated production for example, why even lawyers are required. Maybe what I meant was even doing something like drawing cartoons can lead to great success Possibly universities will be consulting you for your expertise despite not having a university degree but you usually don't get there by letting other people tell you what to do especially if you really have no passion for it.
