Broke a Mast? what boat was this on? Love the Hobie, I need to buy some parts for it, like a new trampoline. More important are the little plastic gadgets within the rudder stocks, both are busted...they are the self release ones. It still works but once you build up some speed the rudders start to trail a bit....helm gets a bit heavy!
I just cant get over how smooth the ride is, sooner be on the hobie when the breeze builds up. My Skiff gets to be a real handful when its getting overpowered..
@robraver I broke it on the Hobie 16! I've got the gennaker package, so as soon as you let the mainsheet off, the mast folds in half... Hopefully a mistake I'll only make once. Mines only about 4 years old and was bought second hand of the hobie centre, and so far everything is working well.
The hobie does get you in to lazy techniques though - what skiff have you got? Musto?
Hi, bet it hurts at speed! got my Hobie a while back....it was here where I live for years...heard loads of scare stories about how dangerous it was etc..its bullshit....handled with some care they are great boats.
Thing is, back in the UK I hear of folk relying a bit too much on safety boats to help them out in times of trouble..capsizes etc. Its a stupid reliance, unless you really need help that is.
@robraver Yep, I agree - we managed fine after that pitchpole with no help from safety cover, although I did recently need rescuing after breaking a mast in the UK... I guess I've been sailing for about 5 years now, and got a hobie 16 about a year ago. I would love to go back to Vass now that I'm a better Cat sailor, It's well worth it if you can get there.
looking at the footage time and again...the main wasnt slackened off any...think I would slacken off a bit if bearing away like he was..looked like some crazy good conditions tho...love sailing my Hobie...tho my Skiff keeps getting in the way! (rs700)
iv,e built a planning cat,,from windsurfing stuff,,the only headache was the double rudder that i had to design and build from scratch,,,its finished now ,,first test at the weekend so i can set it up with slight weather helm
no wait, watched the video again, i thought you were sailing towards the camera, but you are actually sailing away, ok thats a pitchpole!
