This is such a sad song - I cry when I hear it too - I recently saw a doco with an emotional Rolf Harris on. This song was about his dad and uncle who went to World War 1 together, his dad putting up his own age in order to let his younger brother go too. His younger brother was fatally injured in the same hospital his dad was in. He didn't know and didn't get to see his younger brother before did :-(
I vaguely remember this song but it reminds me of my childhood when me and my brothers would play with toy horses.good to see other people appreciate this song.
I vaguely remember this song but it reminds me of my childhood when me and my brothers would play with toy horses.good to see other people appreciate this song.
awww this song is beautiful :D im like a kid and my mom and dad sang this to me when i was sitting in the room with them so decided to learn it :D great song and is now part of my childhood. i love it! :D
@Atomicomet they are in the discreption you may need to scroll down. your from belarus cool but when i hear of belarus i think of that crazy woman (hetalia reference) still sounds like a relly pretty coulor
I was sitting in the garden yesterday listening to this just before my beloved cat of 15 years took ill. We then had to rush him to the vets, where we had to make the awful decision to let him go to sleep (he had suspected brain tumour). Now i just sit listening to this and it makes me think of him. God bless and goodnight misty :-(
Such a clever man, is Rolf Harris - for this song had one meaning to me as a child, in a fun sorta way; and another meaning altogether after having served in the military myself. Thanks for sharing.
i remember this song , my dad used to sing it so slowly to make me go to sleep when i was young . I never knew it was such a big song . its wierd hearing someone else sing it thats not my dad. its like magic to my ears hearing it now :) i love it
oh. my. god. My dad used to sing this too me all the time before I went to bed. Now he rarely tucks me into bed. But just listening to this song bought back all those memories. All those happy memories of when I was a little boy :-)
When I worked for GlaxoSmithKline we were commissioning a new building, and I used to sing this song all the time. Eventually I got another guy I worked with singing it too.
We then started a Rolf Harris Appreciation Society in this new building, and you had to sing Two Little Boys all the way through to become a member, sadly after the building was commissioned all the members moved on to work in other places and the membership fell back to just two little boys (OK two men in their 30's)
This song was not written by him...my great grandpa would sing it to my grandma when she was a little girl every night before bed. During WW2 she sang it to all of her kids before bed, and my dad sings it to me every night. My grandma passed in November and we sand the song it the right way at her funeral. This isn't the actual way it was sang way back when. It was way different.

This is NO 1 in my top ten list of most hated records of all time. The lyrics are really depressing and rip straight through you. I think lying in a bathtub of freezing cold water in the middle of winter has more appeal! I'm mystified as to why Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town didn't make number one, instead of this rubbish!
we sang this when i was small in school im only 14 now but when we was little a teacher sang it with us.. her name was Miss Mahoney. The song is so sad.. :)
Pleased to see from other comments i'm not the only one this song brings to tears. My mum used to play this to my brother and i 30 odd years ago, still a classic
this was a fav of mine when i was 3 and sad but not sorry to say when my mum sung it to me i cried every time but kept asking her to sing it again and again,
I rememeber listening to this as a young girl and not quite understanding that it was a song about their life. Now it reminds me of being in the car with my Grandad, and I fully intend to play this song to my kids and grandkids, cause I think its a song with a moral worth. I know that sounds pompus, but I cry every time i hear this now. Its a song with values.
I understand. My parents got the single for me when it came out as apparently I really liked it (I was three years old at the time), I think that I liked the sound of the song and the drums. Now I listen to the lyrics and it is hard not too shed a tear, very powerful words for now even though I think it comes from American civil war
this song brings happy memories for many, but did you see the documentry about rolf looking into the memory of his 2 uncles who were killed during the war. I think it means so much more to him than anyone will ever know
@kezziye I know what you mean. My dad used to sing this to me as a little girl and I didn't understand the story of it then but even at 3 it made me feel sad. Now it reminds me of being snuggled into my dads arms as he sung.
My grandad passed away on Sunday and my dad sat and sung it to him as he took his last breaths so it's even more special to me now. Beautiful song with a lot emotion.
@kezziye it makes me want to weep. i know i may not be a kid (at 14 but still im never gonna grow up:D) but my mom and dad sang it to me and i loved it and when i realised what it was about. such a lovely song. they should do a kids show on television with like the songs of rolf harris. that would be amazing!!
@kezziye i've not heard this for a while but rolf was on piers morgan just now - i cried too. I was a little boy then 6 years old with 2 bothers and a sister.
dad used to play this to my sisters and me ...i still love it ....with fathers day coming up i thought id have a listen so glad i did...love you dad xxxxx
I love this song, I'm 12 now but I first heard it when I was like 3 and my dad has a record player (He is like ancientXD Only kidding hes what? 42?!xd) and he used to get so mad at me, when I pulled back the arm and the needle scratched the whole record!!!
This song was bought for me by my mother and father for my 4th birthday, in March, 1970. I've always had a soft spot for this song and would play it endlessly, with the arm of the record player pulled back (you have to be a certain vintage to know what that means). Now I have wee boys of my own, the song comes flooding back, especially after seeing Rolf Harris on TV the other day discovering the truth regarding his father and uncle in WW1
