nope you're correct. Its pretty much used to keep the tempo steady, because as humans we aren't perfect time keepers. An interesting to add to it is that time is set to a international standard so any recording studio you go to, you can take the recordings and line it up perfectly with other instruments/effects later, as long as the tempo conforms. its called SMPTE.
