  • the poeple who like this album have extremely food taste in music...Year of the Cat

  • "Lord Grenville" was the perfect lead-in to "On the Border"! Is anybody out there writing songs like this anymore?

  • @hardball3313 Try Sunday everyday live at The Mill Sessions. That guy is doing great music. Reminds me of Al Stewart.

  • I ve seen Al Stewart numerous times in the Philadelphia area over the years and Always puts a great show on. His music is awesome ,what a writer!!! Always brings back great memories for me. Thanks Al for the great music.

  • An absolute MASTERPIECE!!!!

  • Peter white on Piano Phil Kenzi, Tim Renwick, Al Stewart. what a band!!

  • i wish they still played al on the radio so much of this good music is left on voices on the wind but not the air waves I close my eyes and I feel like im on a ship at sea

  • i wish they still played al on the radio so much of this good music is left on voices on the wind but not the air waves

  • three ppl want you to go tell Lord G yourself....

  • Love this song!!

  • A tremendous song. xx

  • If it was not for Al Stewart's song, I would never have learned this part of British history. Apart from the excellent music, Al Stewart writes the most fascinating lyrics. Most songs are about love, few, if any about history and thoughts about our lives. Al is exceptional and I love all his work.

  • Lowered key = easier high notes

  • fabulosa!!!

  • Saw him at a place called the Cotati Cabaret in Cotati, CA. Talked a bit after the show, very polite.

  • @sanclementekid

He played when I was Uni. i recall he wouldnt play unless he was promised a bottle of some alcohol and a woman to get laid. A total pretentious prick. Uses history as a trick

  • @mhpjo I guess that is the life of a rockstar...

  • @mhpjo

Really? I don't believe that. i hope it is not true. i like to think Al Stewart is a nice guy, But i suppose he is just a man. Feet of clay heh? But i can still like him as a singer.

  • @TheLaluna1

I think @mhpjo is confusing his Stewarts. It oten happens with Al Stewart.

Let's not believe without evidence. Other sources have not said anything of the sort, and this is the kind of thing that more people would mention if it had happened. Al Stewart is UN-pretentious from what I gather.

  • WOW ! what a LIVE performance I would dream to see. My favorite A.S. song, I guess, ex-aequo to Broadway Hotel. The year of the cat...one of the best 100 albums of all time... a classic... every one should have a copy at home.

My students and myself paid hommage to the great man (check Youtube: Broadway Hotel - Al Stewart - The Year of the Cat)...

  • Utterly amazing.........

  • i beleive he didnt care what ppl thought about his guitar sound or speed he just played which is what alot of guitarists lacked and lack

  • Love old Al Stewart (grew up with Bedsitter Images..) But in this video he looks like warmonger Tony Blair...

  • He does look a little like Tony - Hahaha.

    Love Al though.

  • Oh wow, Robin Lamble from my old school UCS. Remember when hearing when Martin killed at Scratchwood at the time.

  • At around 2:20 he does a live echo effect. I love him.

  • This is actually my favorite Al Stewart song. Just something so haunting and beautiful about the melody and lyrics. It's incredibly brilliant. Year of the Cat is a total classic for the ages but Lord Greenville is the obscure Stewart classic for the ages.

  • only recently got into al stewart, only have year of the cat but i agree this is my favourite off the album.

  • Yes, it's almost my favorite too...second only to The Dark & Rolling Sea which is terribly under-appreciated.

  • Yes I agree, Dark and Rolling sea is so evocative.. I also love Sirens of titan from that album. I read the book years ago and, when I `got into` Al`s music a bit later was pleased to hear him sing about it.

  • Roads to Moscow was the first song of his that I ever recall hearing and still remains my favourite.

  • @Mjollnir50 Do you think Knopfler was listening to it just before he wrote Brothers in Arms?!? They're REALLY similar! I think Tim Renwick must have been a big influence on his guitar sound.

  • @M400fan ...all the big dogs listen to each other. Renwick has influenced tons of guitar players, but I can't say he and Knopfler sound at all derivative of each other even though they play like cousins.

  • @RailroadBill76 It would surely only be Knopfler who copied Renwick? But it's great to know Tim has influenced so many - hugely underrated talent - is he playing on this video? Was delighted to see him as second lead in Floyd's Pulse tour.

  • @M400fan Yes indeed, I was fortunate enough to see him on the Australian tour of 1985 (approx) he provided some very tasteful guitar parts-Dave Gilmour took the 'feature solos' of courser, but Tim was very present.

Al Stewart's 70/80's albums would not have been the gems they are without him.

  • @GalaxyHorse Yep - and of course he played on Sutherland Brothers and Quiver's Arms of Mary - recognised his style before I knew it was him!

  • I so agree. Beauty all the way through. Takes you out on the sea.

  • @tommybass40 couldn't agree more on both counts!

  • @tommybass40

    Amen, Tommy.

  • @tommybass40 I agree - Tim Renwick's guitar playing on the original is subime - I think the diminshed chords are what give it the haunting effect - and the lyrics are among Al's best - brilliant imagery! : )

  • @tommybass40 Check out Modern tImes and the Track The Dark and Rolling Sea

  • hey painted lady lorraine......HAPPY BIRTHDAY......from a 49 year old al fan

  • Thank you :) smiles

  • I also remember this song when i was 11 or 12 im now 46

  • I remember this song . When i was 12 im now 47 it was beautiful.

  • Hello i was 11 or 12 i'm 46 now wow this is cool

  • question for al stewart fans did ralph mctell copy als song samuel how youve changed when he wrote streets of london.

  • I shouldn't be thumbed down for expressing musical taste. Regardless, I now like the song so whatever.

  • I love this song , thanks 4 the live version , great stuff! very moving. no disrespect to the guitarist but Tim Renwick played that song so perfectly.

  • I never really liked this song. Don't know why.

  • Thanks for posting. It's a real fav!

  • he rarely plays this song live

  • One of the classic Al sea songs. Not quite as good as Dark and the Rolling Sea but close. Haunting vocals and sensational guitar. Fantastic. Watch out for new album in September

  • I remember buying this album around 1976-Always loved Al's voice very soothing and relaxing. Takes me way back to high school, Thanks for posting Gettysburger!!!!!

  • I remember that downward armature and precision fingering...

  • can you buy this concert on DVD? thanks for posting.

  • No. Sorry. This was just a video I brought back from the tour. If you get in touch with the Flanders Philharmonic in Antwerp they may be able to help.

  • Do you have the E mail? I would love to contact them... Seeing stuff like this is rare.. It is a gem but ulta Rare....

  • Have this on the "Year" album. It's a great song and a true story.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • A really beautiful chord progression. Lovely.

  • Awesome song. Awesome album. Nice to see this video came out well, compared to some of the others of Al on YouTube. Thank you for posting.
