He pionered modernism in architecture and laid the foundation for the international style. I love his design concepts. I adore this man for being so talented.
He was still 'the' God of architecture when I was a student in the 1960,s. In London this type of high rise council housing destroyed any sense of community. Most people prefer a backyard that is private and a communal street in the front - this works. They like to be connected to the earth, not living in the sky. He was a great designer but a poor judge of what made urban life tolerable. Communistic notions of "mass habitation"are at last discredited.
I'm of the opinion that 20th century mass architecture has damaged the psychological geography of mankind. They further deprive the individual a connection with the world. It seems to have been a deliberate attempt to assert power and control over various parts of the population.
The structures also serve as containers and as obstacles to liberty.
Contemptible that they were built and forced into view by certain reckless academic intellectuals of the mid 20th century and their unchecked egos.
I personally feel that ultimately his "large scale" architecture failed. And it failed miserably, The legacy of which scars the skyline of most major cities.
yes it's difficult. May I suggest you listen to some of Jean Baudrillard's videos? Afterwards, you will find Le Corbusier easier to understand. (I'm not talking about the philosophies, only of the strong French accent of both men).
I agree with Le Corbu in principle, however ordinary people in government bureaucracies took parts of his ideas and didn't execute them well. It's a shame that so many people have a low opinion of him when in fact it was the imitators that ruined his vision and that of modernism as a whole.
At the first time I didnt liked the Unite d'Habitation... but hearing the arguments of Corbuser I think now it's very interesting. He is a great man indeed
