@86nugget19 I think the all black players are 9/10 the best players going, but to say he started this style of play is ludacris. Check videos of the 71 Lions tour to NZ and check out the British players running from deep and attacking the line like Cullen did.

That last try.... beautiful. Also, check the clock on those last two. First one is ~10s for a straight(ish) run of ~90m. Second is ~14s for the full length of the field... plus dancing through the entire opposition defense!
Thats a good question pal but because these top guys have to achieve massive endurance and aerobic qualities as well it is not as relevant in rugby as it is American football.
Pace is hugely important in rugby but if you compromised your stamina for it too much you then have a team that was outstanding for 20 mins and then publicly eviscerated for the next 60.
A good analogy would be a 100m sprinter vs a 400m runner that could occasionally do well at 200m.
Thanks, i played rugby last year at my university after playing football since i was kid and all the way through high school. It was tons of fun but i just wasn't built to run long distances like that, i did not have the pacing part figured out at all.
His explosive acceleration is just so impressive knowing that everyone around him was also trying to run faster; he was just blowing right past him.
That guy running in support at 1:24 is Jeff Wilson and he was easily faster with better acceleration but just didn't have all the other X values in high enough quantities to impact a game like Cullen could.
Now that you have played both you can see why it is so difficult to compare Amer football with rugby as they place value on hugely different physical and mental attributes.
You could say they subscribe to completely different philosophies. Although that may have too large a 'cheese factor'.
not cheese at all, that makes perfect sense. i was just too 'stuck' in a play by play mentality, when i really needed to be in the ebs and flows of the gameplay. i wasn't terrible, i was just a more successful football player.
i'm considering coming back out to play next season, as my senior year may be less demanding academically, but i'd better start training now if i am going to.
Yeah, I suspect the play by play approach would definitely stifle you in a game of rugby where everything on the periphery of your senses has to be given equal billing to the task in front of you.
Plus when those studs (cleats) make their clattering sound on the way out of the changing sheds you have to want to be completely in that mental groove for 80mins solid and expecting no respite.
That's it!! Rugby on YouTube for me this afternoon.
Jeff Wilson didn't have all the other so-called "X values"? I could not disagree with you more. Wilson's skills and abilities were awe-inspiring - I have been watching rugby players for a long time and I have seen few like him. As his career progressed, he just got better and better. He did the right thing in retiring at the very peak of his game.
I didn't say he didn't rank super high on the good bastard list, I just personally think Cullen ranks a touch higher despite Wilson's obvious top speed and acceleration advantages.
thats all those SA a&%holes know... very little skill but alot of dirt.... but thats what made him the gr8st back of all time; not even their dirty game could contain his brilliance.... i named my 1st born after him n i get goosebumps every time i see him go.... and im a (black) SOUTH AFRICAN
i remember a commentator referring to cullen as hot knife through butter!!! cant judge cullen on every aspect of the game but he was, is and forever will be THE best attacking fullback of all time!!! maybe untill he has a son who decides to play rugby lol!!!
I think you'll find that the word 'cunt' is so perfectly descriptive of a South African that you could just say 'How's that dirty cunt' and we would all nod our heads knowing exactly who you were referring to.
Cullen Ruled alright, kicking was prob his only no so good area of his game. John hart started to play him at centre, then he got some injuries then John Mitchell the spud didnt even select him, thought Ben blair an the Atiga were better.
@pudseypumper i dunno, on his day, Robinson was pretty awesome. However he was a little inconsistent. From what i've heard and seen, Blanco's got to be up there. But Cullen's definitely the best
rofl haha go the all blacks, but did anyone here about quade cooper on the weekend rofl arrested for burglury his wallabie days are over but i betcha they still let him play since hes one of the wallabies best and they need all the players they can but still even tho he's nz born
The GREATEST rugby full back of them all. I really miss watching you carve your magic on the field, no other is in your level. I can't believe everyone including myself still remember and still pissed off at Mitchell. How many more world cups would we have won if this man was on the team. True legend
Cullen is by far the greatest attacking full back ever, Cullen could kick too, but never really had to because when he got the ball he saw nothing but opportunities to attack. PAEKAKARIKI EXPRESS!!! not cheese at all, that makes perfect sense. i was just too 'stuck' in a play by play mentality, when i really needed to be in the ebs and flows of the gameplay. i wasn't terrible, i was just a more successful football player.
i'm considering coming back out to play next season, as my senior year may be less demanding academically, but i'd better start training now if i am going to.

Have a good season brother, hope you do well.

Don't get me wrong bud, he was freaking awesome.

How's that dirty south african cunt at 1:18! beaten for pace so he throws his boots out there to trip cullen!
wensley80 2 years ago
I think you'll find that the word 'cunt' is so perfectly descriptive of a South African that you could just say 'How's that dirty cunt' and we would all nod our heads knowing exactly who you were referring to.
biggest23 2 years ago
yes im sorry, next time, im talking about something dirty a yarpie does i will be sure to just say cunt. wont take long!

Cullen Ruled alright, kicking was prob his only no so good area of his game. John hart started to play him at centre, then he got some injuries then John Mitchell the spud didnt even select him, thought Ben blair an the Atiga were better.

Will there ever be another Christian Cullen? Absolutely amazing player. Greatest Fullback of all time.
selvanator 1 year ago
@duncandohnut1993 Agreed. Only Jason Robinson comes close.
pudseypumper 1 year ago
@pudseypumper i dunno, on his day, Robinson was pretty awesome. However he was a little inconsistent. From what i've heard and seen, Blanco's got to be up there. But Cullen's definitely the best

The GREATEST rugby full back of them all. I really miss watching you carve your magic on the field, no other is in your level. I can't believe everyone including myself still remember and still pissed off at Mitchell. How many more world cups would we have won if this man was on the team. True legend
colbran 2 years ago
I can't believe New Zealanders allow Mitchell to stay in their country! Dropping arguably the most gifted rugby player of all time!!

We dont, he lives in Australia now.

@FZ6A320
Certainly a valid point, however, Jeff Wilson is the most gifted player in the history of the game.
