I thought I was the only one left that still hand painted all of my camo's, good to see there are others. Not knocking airbrushes or anything just my own preferance is all...
I think we will learn to appreciate these old raised panel lines model kits more and more as they slowly seem to fade away into the darkness. One day they will all be recessed kits like the recent special hobby releases. But as we strive for perfection, we may just loose some of our abilities as modelers to do that job ourselves. I have both the old heller and the 2 new special hobby kits, but the old kit still holds a V.I.P. place on my shelf.
@mybluebelly Well, some people maintain that the art of TRUE modelling is to turn the old kits into something as good as what the new kits look like, and I agree.. Things like pre-painted etch brass seatbelts is all very good and neat, but like you say, when it is done for you and not by you, some skills get lost in the process.. :P I compromise and use etched brass seatbelts, but paint them myself.. :) I have the Special Hobby R21, and meant to build it ages ago..
Oh man, you achieve this excellence with a PAINT BRUSH? Well, I guess that's why you're the one posting on youtube, and I'm the one blasting away with my little Badger.
@mookins45 Ha ha ha ha ha.. :) Thank you.. I would blast away with an airbrush too, if I only had somewhere to sit and do it.. Still, I enjoy brushing 'by hand' so for now that's what I'll continue doing.. :)
@plasticairplanes I use a low aromatic brush cleaner, to remove the paint from the bristles.. and then I wash the brushes in soapy water afterwards, to remove the brushcleaner... :)
@MEU98 I'm using one of those sticks with hairs at the end of it.. i.e a brush! :) Don't own an airbrush, nor do I have anywhere to use one... Thank you for your positive comment, I'm striving to improve my brush technique as and when I can.. :)
@bruce3371 I'm quite excited at the mo.. There's FINALLY an injected kit out of the JET version of this aircraft, the J21 R.. My son is buying it for me for Fathers Day! When I get it everything else will go on hold, and THAT kit will be built! It's only the second aircraft ever to be converted to jet, from a piston engined original, the other aircraft was a Soviet Russian type, can't remember which one right now.. :)
@BasicModelling I was just about to mention the BAC Jet Provost, thinking it was converted from the piston engined Provost. But, after looking into it again, realised that it wasn't a straight conversion, it was a development!
Anyway, looking forward to seeing your J21R when it's done :)
Great build! The kit looks very good :) Only 7 steps!! Are you using Revell paint or something - :D :D... you shook and stirred like mad :) How on earth did they get those things to balance on the front landing gear in real life????? I mean usually the engine would be in the front for example in a Fairey Gannet to weigh it down so the front landing gear would touch the ground but with this they can't have put extra weight in the front or the thing wouldn't take off! How? Great video anyway :)
@Spitfire44679 I only ever use HUMBROL, apart from Revell 9 and 46. :) Can't stir and shake the paint too much, trust me.. :) I don't know how they constructed the landing gear, but I think when they first flew the prototype, the landing gear legs all folded when landing, and had to be reinforced.. As a small bit of trivia, I can tell you this plane used the same engine as the Bf 109's.. just a bit o useless info!! They did lower the gear when they converted the J21 into the J21 R jet version
I almost never PAY any particular attention to the price listed for an(y) upper level kit. I do agree that the prices are very stiff especially here in scandinavia, but i don`t think to much about it, because i would only get grey haired ;-) I just burned off 2500 pounds on models last week, but that was a substantial investment. I do ponder what happens the day i have them all ;--) I try to collect them all (1:72,WWII aero) There must be more than 500 variants not counting all the subtypes...
@mybluebelly I've given up counting the money I've spent on models over the years.. but I have now reached a stage where I only buy kits I really will build, rather than stocking up for future projects.. :) :) I have enough to last me this lifetime and next.. but as I'm likely to be reincarnated as a dungbeetle, I hope somebody else gets to enjoy my kits one day.. :)
@mybluebelly Yes, it probably is... but runour has it a new injected kit will be released this year, of the J21 R, which should offer an easier option than the resin conversion.. hopefully!! I'm keeping a keen eye on all the websites, so I won't miss it.. :) Hm, having seen your comment below you already knew about the Special Hobby kit.. :)
I just ordered this excact same kit from Sweden yesterday, just because i decided not to get it some 15 years ago. And at the same time, i noticed that Special Hobby is very soon releasing their (probably) state of the art Saab, J-21 in this scale, so i reserved a copy of that one to. How cool is that?! (i do mean the aeroplane is cool)
@mybluebelly Didn't know it could be reserved, perhaps I better look into that.. then again it is bound to be expensive in Sweden, I was shocked at the prizes of models when I was last home.. :P
@TomatoMug Probably to make sure the propeller didn't hit the ground.. When they converted this plane into the J21 R jet version, the landing gear was made lower..
Nice! Recently i bought a heller model also, it was a canadair, but i got VERY DISGUSTED. The decals weren't very good, and for assembly they don't have anything that makes it more glued, i can't say that in english because i don't know how to say it. Excuse me for my english, and btw good model!
@fmcVlad I would if I were you.. and if you find the jet conversion set, please get one for me too.. I will have to pay you somehow, or trade for something else.. :)
Excellent work! It specially caught my attention the shark-mouthed model X) As beautiful as unusual a model. It can rival in oddity with my J7W1 Shiden, also with a pushing propeller X)
@Bloodrin79 Well, some count it as a WWII fighter, but as it was Swedish and never saw action during the war, it is largely forgotten.. outside Sweden.. :)
@GerbilEssences@GerbilEssences I got about 4 kits in one go from SBX Models in Ipswich a few years ago.. I will convert another one to a rocket carrying version of the J21 A-3.. and then I'll keep one to hopefully convert into the Jet version when I can get my hands on a conversion set.
That leaves a spare one, which I need to keep in case I botch up the conversion.. If not I'll make it into the A-2 version, visually the same as the A-1, just a different armament.. But if you want one I'll keep an eye out for when I go to the Hendon Show (hopefully) in May.. :)
@BasicModelling I apprecite the offer, but I'm hoping to do a flying model at some point. The Se5 is painted, but not in a good way, it really needs a layer of polyfiller to seal all the gaps in the foam otherwise it looks awful. I may indeed start yet another project ;O
@GerbilEssences Oh, the joy of modelling.. I have now started the ICM 1/48 Spitfire Mk.VII.. just for something totally different! It wasn't in my plans at all.. :)
@GerbilEssences Nope, only a couple of different conversion sets.. one resin and one vac-form, I believe.. both of which are very hard to come by.. :P
Awesome work bro, very nicely done.Your work always amazes me, you make it look so realistic that I'm gonna need some serious flying lessons...lol!!! When is the contest over? Just curious. Keep on building, I look forward to seeing more from you. Oh & the stirring & shaking was comedic!!! I was like dang bro, shake that bottle...lol!!! Peace!!!

nice plane and music & because the swedes did make that plane into a jet, it just seems right that you also can do that with a J21 prop plane...uh, could you convert it back into the A-1 version...that's te classic one... lol lol :) shake rattle and roll ...going to brekkie nice vid:)
@svinehunden Well, I have got over my inhibitions of making a total idiot of myself.. so there you go!! :) :) Currently making another Swedish fighter, the J22.. and then maybe I finally will get round to making the Danish version of the SAAB B17 too, at some point.. while I'm in the mood for Swedish designed aircraft! :) Don't be surprised if I end up doing something completely different, though.. :)
@lapispinoza Saab built a lot of aircraft on license, but the J21 was their own first fighter design, yes.. or so I believe! I hope to build a twin Mustang at some point, when I can find a nice kit at a reasonable price.. Failing that I can always convert. two ordinary Mustangs... :)
That's was an interesting kit - I've always thought that SAAB looked a little, well, odd! Something about the front not seeming to belong to the back and the whole fuselage not belonging to the wings - like it was made up of bits of other planes!!! But that's just me!
Oh and Mr Fancy-Pants with his proper metal paint stirrer - not like the rest of us peasants who have to make do with bits of sprue!!! Hehehe.. Must get one....;)
@BradThunder@BradThunder Yes, odd it is.. but now it belongs to a long list of classic Swedish designs.. :) It had a 'Messerschmitt Bf 109' type engine, otherwise than that I think everything was original Swedish design, even the ejection seat..
As for the metal paint stirrer, it's not fancy at att.. it's the discarded metal axle from the Airfix 'Shaun the Sheep & Tractor' set, a model which probably never will be finished! My father in law was supposed to have it for Christmas 2008.. I'll probably end up just making the Shaun, Bitzer and Timmy figures in time for NEXT Christmas.. Oh, the joy of modelling..
@projektor1954 Thank you.. :) Got the decals at the clubmeeting a week ago, and as I had long wanted to do a 'bomb' version of this plane, I got going on it very quickly.. :) Some things just can't wait.. :)
@leokimvideo It does look nice as a jet.. but for some unfathomable reason Heller never made a jet version, only the piston engined plane, as shown.. You can but a vac form and / or resin conversion set, but it is very hard to come by these days.. I know somebody who has a set, but he refuses to sell! :) I hope to find a set one day, because they used the jet version at my old Fighter Wing, and so I'd love to build it..
I remember seeing twin boomed planes flying over our house when I was little, but they were De Havilland Vampires. I always thought they were the jet version of these, though.. but sadly not. They stopped using them 5 years before I was born.. :)
What kind of filler do you use? Ive got problems with Revell Plasto, i think it hates me or i am just retarded. I cant get even surface. How long you wait for it to get dry?
@bozidar89 I use the 'Squadron Fast Drying White Putty' and 'Vallejo Plastic Putty'.. It says on the tube that the Squadron putty dries in 30 minutes, but I always leave on over night, or severall hours at least.. As for the Vallejo putty, you just add it, wipe off the excess.. leave if for a while and it's ready to be painted over! The Squadron putty normally needs sanding smooth when dry.. You need to use a fine grit 'wet & dry' sandpaper for a smooth surface, that works the best! :)
@ArtistNR I strongly recommend that you do.. Should you find a kit and the decals turn out to be bad, let me know.. I can send you some good ones.. :)
@ArtistNR Well, that's why I'm here.. I may not be the best moeller ever seen, but I promote the hobby in any other way I can.. :) :) You know where to find me.. :)
@tenka45623 Thank you.. :) Both Heller and Airfix used to produce a lot of model kits of Saab Aircraft, and were very popular in Sweden when I first started building models.. You can still get most of the old Heller kits if you know where to look.. :)

Another nice model from Basic Modeling! 5 stars
tankman13p66 1 year ago
nice plane and music & because the swedes did make that plane into a jet, it just seems right that you also can do that with a J21 prop plane...uh, could you convert it back into the A-1 version...that's te classic one... lol lol :) shake rattle and roll ...going to brekkie nice vid:)

BasicModelling 1 year ago
@lapispinoza Saab built a lot of aircraft on license, but the J21 was their own first fighter design, yes.. or so I believe! I hope to build a twin Mustang at some point, when I can find a nice kit at a reasonable price.. Failing that I can always convert. two ordinary Mustangs... :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
V.Nicely done. Again!
BradThunder 1 year ago
@BradThunder @BradThunder Yes, odd it is.. but now it belongs to a long list of classic Swedish designs.. :) It had a 'Messerschmitt Bf 109' type engine, otherwise than that I think everything was original Swedish design, even the ejection seat..
BasicModelling 1 year ago
As for the metal paint stirrer, it's not fancy at att.. it's the discarded metal axle from the Airfix 'Shaun the Sheep & Tractor' set, a model which probably never will be finished! My father in law was supposed to have it for Christmas 2008.. I'll probably end up just making the Shaun, Bitzer and Timmy figures in time for NEXT Christmas.. Oh, the joy of modelling..

More than well done!!

@projektor1954 Thank you.. :) Got the decals at the clubmeeting a week ago, and as I had long wanted to do a 'bomb' version of this plane, I got going on it very quickly.. :) Some things just can't wait.. :)

I agree with the comment below,
looks nice as a jet..!
leokimvideo 1 year ago

How long you wait for it to get dry?
bozidar89 1 year ago
@bozidar89 I use the 'Squadron Fast Drying White Putty' and 'Vallejo Plastic Putty'.. It says on the tube that the Squadron putty dries in 30 minutes, but I always leave on over night, or severall hours at least.. As for the Vallejo putty, you just add it, wipe off the excess.. leave if for a while and it's ready to be painted over! The Squadron putty normally needs sanding smooth when dry.. You need to use a fine grit 'wet & dry' sandpaper for a smooth surface, that works the best! :)

@BasicModelling Thanks, i'll try that!

This plane looks very cool. I will probably build it myself sometime :) 5*

Very nice. A fairly exotic aircraft kit around these parts but well worth looking for.

@tyrbolo It's an exotic aircraft anywhere... a classic Swedish design.. :)

tenka45623 1 year ago
@tenka45623 Thank you.. :) Both Heller and Airfix used to produce a lot of model kits of Saab Aircraft, and were very popular in Sweden when I first started building models.. You can still get most of the old Heller kits if you know where to look.. :)
