You would have been better off buying a high definition MiniDV camcorder, like a Canon Legria HV-40. As well as being compatible with Powermacs, it would have been a lot less CPU intensive, so there would be less reason to buy a Mac Pro.
I strongly agree with the luck thing, I bought my 15 inch macbook pro locally for $396 and I got a mac pro off of ebay for $950, i've had extraordinary luck, and the deals are out there if you look hard enough.
I just bought a powermac G5 Dual 2Ghz and concidering its not exactly new its still a pretty powerful machine and runs Everything i run at it at almost full speed, it takes me about 1 hour to rip a DVD
i think they should leave u alone about no having a power pc because u still have a power book and a power mac and u cand do all the same stuff that a power mac can on a intel and more
@zac1256 but the intel chip is more reliable and Boosts out almost the same performance, whilst staying very cool, the powerpc is an overhating nightmare and it doesnt run very efficiently, my Powermac g5 had Dual Cpu's whereas many new intel macs have Dual cores, In theory same power is pumped out, but intel is proven to be better for its reasons.
actually the G5 is pretty good at ripping DVD's if you have a great optical drive, your optical drive I believe was the original 2004 super drive. I have a 2010 HP optical drive, and movies rip in about 30 minutes to an hour(an hour for the long movies). A big part of transferring DVD's is just the optical drive. And yes some companies do still make new fast IDE Optical drives. Now if only the G5 was good at rendering XD
@oldVideoGamesChannel Hmm. Different experiences to me. No matter what drive, my G5 would have NEVER converted a DVD for iTunes in 30 minuets... No way... You must be lucky :L
@theaaplfan There isn't a drive out there at the moment with a big enough capacity for what I want. I need separate hard drives. Also, having 4 hard drive bays really makes this thing future proof because of the ease of upgrading... Cheers.
@ijoshtech Dude, the 5770 over here is £200... I can sell my X1900 on eBay for £120... A 5770 over here for a PC is like, £110 - £140. Not that much more expensive considering your guaranteed a working card with your Mac.
@Techsupportgoneeasy I think the Apple TV is a great little device. However, I wouldn't buy one because the setup I'm running at the moment is proving to be everything I need :) I have a 10M VGA cable running from my Mac Pro up to my projector, and I use Front Row on my Mac. No need to spend more money on yet another piece of hardware :)
In my opinion, macs are overpriced and I would much rather prefer building a PC at home, but there you go. My opinion on performance: the more powerful the CPU the more stuff you can do with your computer, the more RAM the faster the computer, and the better the video card the least chance your system will stop responding. Way to go for buying one main computer though.
@Paspiedreamcast Every mac user on earth has heard this all before. We get it. You're never going to change our minds. He got a smokin' deal on a top notch machine. Grats to him.
:P browsing to see that urs is beter ..i like that .....what do you use for ripping???
and going back to the start to your options, was a hackintosh not an option that came to mind??? i now theres leg al issues and what not :P but its ALOT cheaper mine is a 3.1ghz quad core 8gb of ram 2tb of hdd an a 1tb internal backup ;) usb and firewire cards ,,,thats the basics .....and its in a g3 bw case lol i love the power pc macs .....cool alternitave :P cool vid keep the coming
@andrewnaylor08 Dream Mac? Hell yeah! It'll be my dream Mac wether it's got 1GB of RAM or 32GB of RM... It'll still be my dream Mac even if it doesn't have a video card! It's a Mac Pro.. :P :D
It could easily work with PowerPC but they just like to suck the money out of people. They don't realize the economy around the world. The same goes for Snow Leopard, if it can work on AMD hackintoshes then someone should make Lion work on PowerPC G5's.
@sonic3243 Oh, and AMD is the same CPU architecture as Intel. It's x86. PPC is a RISC architecture and it's quite different, there's a reason it took a few versions of OSX and very comprehensive emulation software (Rosetta) during the transition. Apple did a great job making things move over as smooth as possible though and it makes sense for them to only support one standard considering you can only buy Macs using Intel now. Most PC's from that time have been replaced anyway, or near to it.
What quality can you get with a avchd camera on a power pc
MrPearPodd 3 weeks ago
@MrPearPodd You can't import AVCHD footage using PowerPC Macs. PowerPC Mac's aren't compatible with the format.

Also, you can't really go wrong with 8 cores, 16GB of RAM, and 2x Intel SSDs in RAID 0.
