  • As a stand alone film, its was pretty good i enjoyed it BUT considering it was to be about a prequel to the orginals, i felt very let down, it doesnt tell u how they REALLY got together, just another twist, other timeline version & isnt that the very reason why Enterprise flopped? take out the the middle seasons & Enterprise wasnt that part, explaining how they met the andorians etc but the whole war with a species that doesnt exist....... personally i was looking forward to the romulan war..

  • A bit of lens flare was a nice thing, like the reflections off the consoles on the actors faces for example, but the others with the blocking the whole screen...wtf?

  • LLLLLLEEENNNNNSSSSSS FLare!

  • @JohnnyC133 I think the point of this movie (besides the money, but we'v already established EVERYTHING is about money) was to air out the entire franchise. Voyager, although a good premise was under developed and neglected in so many ways, and enterprise was an abomination. The only series that truely worked for EVERYONE was the original. If they had just rebooted it with younger versions all you would be doing is going over what had already been done. then NOONE would be happy!

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope This was just a bad idea, plain and simple. I agree Star Trek was getting a little stale, but this new direction was a giant misstep. A younger version of the Enterprise crew? We don't want Enterprise 90210! They should have made a movie either about DS9 or an entirely new premise for Star Trek.

Personally I wish they'd gone with the script depicting the Earth-Romulan War.

  • @JohnnyC133 A little stale? I clicked on enterprise and almost coughed up a mothball! I liked the A/U, because I grew up with Kirk, Spock, Data, Warf, Sisko, Otto, Janeway and 7/9 (well, im only 16, so technically still growing) and I love the fact that these new movies are bringing such amazing characters back to life, with real flaws, and arnt automatically perfect. They have room to grow and develop, and go were no trekkie has gone before! +You must admit no trek movie can be worse than no, 5

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope I meant Enterprise crew, as in NCC-1701 Enterprise, not NX-01. Movie #5, for all of its flaws, did many things well. It showed the camaraderie between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy (Gotta love those scenes where they're camping), it showed how Kirk was stilling dealing with the pain over the murder of his son and how each had to learn to let their separate past pains go. Abrams could have learned about character development from the Final Frontier.

  • @JohnnyC133 When I refered to the NX-01 I was talking about your comment that things were getting stale. Nuh uh, 5 was an absolute abomination. It had its moments but the entire premise was utter bullshit! The overall plot was crap and I dont care whats going on, Spock and Mccoy would never turn on Kirk unless there was something wrong with him! the entire thing was pointless. though I actually agree that the earth/romulan war would have been awesome

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope I agree 5's story was bullshit, the whole mutiny thing though explainable was over the top, but still the character development and camaraderie was still good even if poorly executed. Like I said, the camping scenes actually feel like three friends going camping.

Imagine if DoucheKirk, EmoSpock, and UrbanMcCoy from 2011 tried those scenes. You'd want to kill all of them and burn down Yosemite after 2 minutes.

  • @JohnnyC133 they could have done so much more with 5 + 6! though to be honest I've always seen K/S but I get where you're coming from. the familiarity from the 3 of them is from years of knowing each other, trusting each other and literally dying for each other. Though you have to admit given enough time TOS kirk spock and mccoy would burn down yosemite for themselves! the newbies are STILL developing! the newbies will camp out just as awesome friends after many DIFFERENT and unique escapades!

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope But we already have the adventures of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy! Three TV seasons and six movies, what more do we need? Star Trek needs something new, a completely new premise, not a rehash of the good ol' days with a new paint job and terrible dialogue/plot.

Besides, movie number 6 was better in its entirety and purpose than all of DS9 put together. Both tried to show a darker side of the Federation, but only movie 6 succeeded without ruining everything.

  • @JohnnyC133 But nothing has been working has it? The only series that has totally worked was TOS! DS9 was the darkest of all the franchise cause it delved into the cultures of the various aliens instead of brushing over it. I liked the 6th movie, but I agree with Leonard Nimoy, its could have been an amazing opportunity to develop the klingons as a whole. Missed opportunity there that DS9 capitalised fully. There are no GOOD ideas since DS9¬! people have tried and failed horribly.

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope DS9 was terrible. It completely ruined Star Trek by destroying the exploration, the idealism, the naive hope for the future by dragging down the Federation. Section 31? There's a reason they shot Roddenberry into space after he died: he would have comeback and gone zombie on Ronald Moore and Ira Steven Behr for they did to the franchise.

If we can't come up with anything new, perhaps its best to end Star Trek rather than destroy it with bad teen drama movies.

  • @JohnnyC133 Interesting how we all have our different favourite Star Trek series :) My favourite was actually DS9, I love lengthy stories that span many episodes. DS9 had a story that spanned the entire length of the show through multiple series.

  • @1wibble2 Actually, I did like DS9's long story arcs. Just didn't like what those long story arcs were about.

Honestly, DS9 did somethings very well, it's just unfortunate that those good things are outweighed by the things that DS9 did poorly.

  • @JohnnyC133 Kirk in TOS also had his mutinous moments! He also pretty much cheated in TOS too. Spock has in fact been shown in TOS to be a faulty planner to a point of almost getting mccoy and 2 others killed and at a mutinous point.

The intrepid had what, 400 vulcans? theres a huge ass difference to 4 billion and 400 hundred dying all at once. Plus his freakin mother wasnt on the intrepid!

We see him in one bar, where HE was attacked. In almost fight of TOS Kirk was depicted as a brawler.

  • The actual movie part was only 3.5 seconds long.

  • Sounds like someone's video calling you on Msn in the background..

  • Yeah that Lense flare got everywhere, that Bridge must have been like a giant sunbed

  • The fact that they had to shine lights in our faces through out the movie, should say something.

  • It's scientifically proven that there's more lens flare in space, quit complaining.

  • People shouldnt winge so much. Ever read Leonard Nimoys book 'I am spock'? He was a picky bitch for all things star trek and he approved of this movie. I thought the story was brilliant, and same as the original series should be judged for its crap effects this movie shouldnt be solely judged on its over used CGI. Double standards much people?

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope Story? Brilliant? HAHAHAHA! Been watching the new Star Wars movies a bit much have we?

But besides that, Star Trek fans hated this film for more than just bad story and horrible lens flares. It's also because they made Kirk a douche, Spock emo, Uhura a skank, and Scotty is now Willy Wonka.

  • @JohnnyC133 ...Spock always had issues :P Its throughout the original series that he had a shit life, was bullied, had major daddy issues. Everyone was younger in this film, and if you can honestly say everybody out there is born mature/wise you are in fact speaking horse shit. Lets face it too, as much as Ioved the original series, Kirk has always been an emotionaly cripped douche.

Star wars? Seems like an irrelevant comment. Original 3 = awesome, prequels sucked arse.

    Willy wonka? ROFL

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope Spock had issues sure, but how many times did he allow himself to be goaded into punching out Kirk on the bridge? (Not that DoucheKirk didn't deserve it.) And there's a difference between maverick and douche. Shatner's Kirk was a maverick, Pine's Kirk is a douche. He gropes Uhura for God's sake!

  • @JohnnyC133 If you mean in the bar he may have been pleased about it but it was an accident. 3 that I can remember. The naked time when he slapped kirk, Amok time when he almost killed Kirk during Pon Farr and the one where they find 'paradise' and get high off flowers. He almost killed Kirk then too. Because Kirk was winding him up to get an emotional response. In the film it was an alt. universe, he was meant to be different. The death of his father and his mothers abandonment fucked him up.

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope And there in lies the problem. These are not the characters of Kirk and Spock. They're completely different people. We didn't want a re-imagining of the characters or the Star Trek universe.

This movie was supposed to be a reboot, but it wasn't. It was a remake, a remake as Abrams, who is a self-avowed Trek hater, saw fit.

  • @JohnnyC133 They're NOT completely different, they're young, and still develping. Yes, it can be argued that it was a hollywood money grabbing attempt at... ya know, money grabbing but EVERY tv show/book/movie/band is created with the ultimate goal of monetary gain.

I think the movie was great BECAUSE of the changes. the entire franchise is kinda stale (did you watch enterprise? Utter bollocks) and this airing out is a new beginning.

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope We don't mind a reboot, as I said, but we don't want a REMAKE. This wasn't making Star Trek 'new' or 'fresh'. This was pandering to the lowest common denominator, pandering to those who think Kirk needs to be an asshole to be likeable.

The story was drivel, had no high mind ideas or themes, the music was ok but nothing memorable, and the entire movie was driven on coincidences and deus ex machina. Is it really so hard to make a good movie while working within canon?

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope They are completely different! Kirk, in his Academy years, was known to be uptight, hardworking, and serious. And Spock was Spock. Calm, logical, non-violent. Just because it's an alternate universe doesn't mean Abrams can throw the entirety of their established character out the window.

  • @JohnnyC133 In TOS Kirk was working to emulate his father. In the movie he was there cause he had nothing better to do, and was fed up of living in his dead fathers shadow! He was a fantastic student, he was compressing a 4 year course into 3! the kobayoshi maru basically rubbed his fathers death in his face, and hes freaking Kirk. Of course hed rebel against it! Vulcans feel each other die. Of course spock would be a bit off balance after feeling almost all of them die at once!

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope Kirk never rebelled without good reason. Because he got shown up at the Academy is not a good enough reason.

NuSpock is still not Spock. He's an whiny emo. Remember when the Intrepid was destroyed? Spock was off-balance for like 2 minutes, then was ready to move on. Besides, destroying Vulcan = completely stupid.

No matter how you spin it, DoucheKirk is a barhopping, sexual pervert, mutinous lout.

  • @TentacleXrapistXpope But, like I said, having to create an alt. universe just so writers can make Star Trek 'fresh' is extremely lazy. This story had no purpose, no point, other than to satisfy this generation's need to shiny things explode. It was like having George Lucas and Michael Bay collaborating on a film, except worse. (If that's even possible)

  • @JohnnyC133 Dude, worse than george lucas/michael bay is impossible! If that day ever comes, lucifer shall rise. Just saying.

He had good reason to rebel against the kobashashi maru. As pointed out, it was a total cheat, and completely demeaned george Kirks sacrifice. I will admit that there were faults (scottys accent, uhura TALKING, Delta vega) but I felt the general characterisation was spot on. On the bridge Kirk was RIGHT, and if hed gone along with Spocks plan EVERYONE would be dead!

  • This film COMPLETELY sucked.

  • The anamorphic flares were a great visual treat imo. Haters gonna hate.

  • the funny thing is, I never noticed there was a lens flare until I saw that people were reacting to it...I say, leave JJ Abrams alone. It was an excellent film, lens flare or no lens flare!

  • I love the awkward silence at the end

  • Oh man I just can't get enough of the LEEENSE FLAARREEE, hilarious.

  • i like the part where there's lens flare

  • lmao!!!!

  • I was surprised the cast was not wearing sun glasses on the bridge.

  • i like the lense flare

  • IIIII NEEEEEEDZZZZZ LEEEEENS FLAEERRRR

  • LEENS FLAARE!!! still needs moar

  • Lame. The only reason 99% of people harp on the lens flare thing is because THEY HEARD ABOUT IT. If someone hadn't pointed it out, they wouldn't have noticed nor cared, like with the hundreds of other movies that have lens flare. If someone specified how many times the word "ship" is used, there would be an onslaught of 'ship' spoof videos. Have an original thought, people.

  • @solipsism101

99%? Bit of an exaggeration maybe? The only reason people make these is because they heard about the first few "XXXX in 5 seconds". You gonna complain at them for not having an original thought too?

  • @solipsism101

So you think only 1% of people can detect bright lights constantly flashing in their eyes? Are you blind and don't know any better or just a special kind of retarded?

  • @solipsism101 Ok, here is one, from a real Trekkie. This movie Sucks because it does not hold true to the values of one Gene Roddenberry who made Star Trek about Social Relations. All Episodes reflected on actual Political situations or contained a moral. This new movie that had simply got the name Star Trek slapped on to it is a disgrace for any true trek fan. The characters were flat, the story and motivation of the enemy is a piece of shit. I know why i dount count this as a Star Trek Movie..

  • @2LucasKane3 Jesus, JJ Abrams made a movie, not a TV episode. Did you want this to be more like Avatar?

  • @Madfoot713 avatar was soooooo cool. And granted. Even all the other Star Trek movies were action movies. But the villains had much more depth. No matter what, i wont like this movie. I mean.. they destroyed fucking Vulcan. And the story of this nero guy was so inconclusive..

  • @2LucasKane3 Avatar was a turd we've seen a million times already, just polished up and with a bow on it.

  • @2LucasKane3 You do know that this movie is set in an AU, right? It isn't disregarding all of what has happened in ToS or previous films.

  • @vivelevera You do know that this movie is set in our universe that has been changed, right? This completely erases all Star Trek series and movies besides Enterprise. So... who the hell's Roddenberry?

  • @2LucasKane3 If you're a reall Trekkie, then you must realise that the film is set in an ALTERNATIVE REALITY! They're renewing the original series for people of my age.

  • @Rikairiify People your age can't watch the original series?

  • @0its0green0 I mean, using better effects and CGI

  • @Rikairiify Right. I say again, people your age can't watch the original series? CGI, lens flare and effects don't make good movies. Good stories do.

  • i like lens flare

  • That clip was wayyyy too long.i think it need to be shorten a lil bit*

  • LOL

  • Lets face it, anything is better than Voyager...

  • @TheFly24601 are you kidding me. i would rather watch enterprise than sit through x1

    and that's saying something

  • @MrXclio oh yehhh enterprise...sorry, i try to forget it exists. I'll rephrase and specify, Enterprise is shit, Voyager as a whole is shit, though it does have its 10 or so episodes that are really very good. Voyager's concept was excellent but not developed into the great show it could have been, darned Rick Berman, ruined everything.

  • CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you blasfeem the mighty trek go to HELL

  • even "the final frontier" beats this crappy movie :-)

  • I didn't mind the lens flares in the new movie at first, but after awhile it got annoying because I wanted to see the entire frame. Actor's faces would just get lost in a haze of light haha. I don't think it's realistic (why would the bridge of a star ship blind the crew? The lights shouldn't be that bright! And the view screen would be dark if they weren't near a star), more about looking cool. But I just kept getting distracted by the bright streaks of light lol.

  • Out of all of the trek movies this one was my least favorite.

  • @fredfredfang21 (new account replscement for jabbathehutt5555) It was completly off the storyline, They make Kirk a bar fighting punk who tries to bone EVERYONE.. Need i say more?

  • @MrGeorgethealien kirk already tries to bone everyone.

  • welp... That was shit.

  • OMG ROFL

that was unbelievable stupid but GREAT

  • The excuse that lens flare makes it real is a lie. When was the last time you saw anything with lens flare obstructing your vision? Bright/blinding/flaring light yes, LENS flare no (plus, any normal human being tries NOT to be blinded by light). By definition lens flare requires an actual camera lens, hence, lens flare is artificial. Plus, any self-respecting camera user uses lens flare as an effect sparingly. The fact nearly every shot in this movie had it, indicates there was WAY too much.

  • @LoouLost try wearing glasses its lot constant lens flarenes ^_^

  • Oh man, that reminded me so much of my friend John who I'm sure you care so much about and my story is intensely fascinating, yes. :I Anyway I lol'd.

  • Oh and for those who are complaining about realism, how would it be physically possible to not get a lens flare while looking at a spacecraft that is directly in front of a giant star? I

  • The lens flares were made while shooting using lights. They weren't digitally added and I personally don't think that it adds or takes away from anything.

In any case, it's how the human eye works and if we were on a white, brightly lit ship we'd probably experience quite a few flares in out vision.

  • the fck??

  • The lens flare wasn't BAD, per say. It was just... too much >.>

  • Personally, I thought the lens flare was an amazing touch. It didn't break the movie's reality at all for me.

  • Nice! XD I don't know why people don't find this funny!

  • hahahaa TRUE....

  • But- I LOVE lens flares! (Basically the camera becomes like a human eye! We KNOW when we're supposed to be blinded by their awesomeness! Needless to say it sucks in 3D movies.)

  • LENS FLARE!

    Phenomenal!

  • @dorgrim Yeah.. Cause Jar Jar Binks was soooooooooooooo cool :P

  • I like the movie except for all the flares. Kept pulling me out and made me think: it's a movie which they've added fake cinematography mistakes onto. Oh well. I like photography and I understand his reasons but jeez, most flared out movie ever, maybe? Loved the RiffTrax commentary, too, speaking of MST...

  • Wrath of Kahn=Thoughtful, Watchful, Insightful, Spaced, Paced, no Waste

    Enterprise=Boring...boring...boring...boring

Star Trek=Teens, Tits, Tantrums, Flash, Fast, Forgotten, Noisy, Showy, Blowy, Lead, Feed, Dead to me.

  • @Christtnot: You forgot to list over-rated and over-played on the "Wrath of Kahn" part.

  • LENSSSSS FLEEAAARRRRGHH

  • lense flair made it seem all the more real. get the dvd. they show it with and without. you see the difference and wish there was lense flair. Whatever though. there has to be the 15% trekie fanbase that has to bitch about everything.

  • I would rather be able to see the backgrounds, bad or not. Fact of the matter is, if the sets looked bad without the lens flares, than they should have been changed instead of being glossed over.

That's not my Trek side talking, its common cinimatography that if the sets are almost all bad, than change them. You can hide a few, but when entire scenes are flared out, you have a problem.

Complete desruction of everything Trek is another matter that I hope not to bring up.

  • @dagorlad3 He was talking about immersion and realism, not set design. Now get over yourself you tosser.

  • @clemsonman0503 For some people, myself included, the lens flares make it seem all the more fake, by definition. It registers as a shock that makes immersion and suspension of disbelief much more difficult. That's the point some of us are trying to make. I'm no Trekkie, just someone who likes movies.

  • i agree with clemsonman0503, it was perfectly good with or without, but it was better with the lens flares also i consider myself one of the 85%

  • some trekkies need to sing the last line of the MST3K song to themselves :)

Anyway, good movie, loved the flares.

  • @glovisy what do you MEAN IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW THEY EAT AND BREATHE?!!?!!? MUST KNOW ALL SCIENCE FACTS!!!

  • Repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax"... :)

  • @glovisy: Thank you.

  • @glovisy: Thank you.

  • Its a shame, the new movie is awesome and I am very interested in seeing what they do with the new timeline

  • @slyguy3129 Screw it up most likely. :P

  • LMMFAO!!!!!

  • lens flares - silly - LOL - but, wow...lots of angry folks commenting...i'll just say that i loved the new star trek...i loved the old star trek and it's sequels...i loved ALL of the tv series, too... there are exceptions with EVERYTHING, but overall, the spirit with which roddenberry created it is still there...the stories are well written, the characters are well played... lighten up, folks...enjoy... live long and prosper. :) xo

  • "Lensflare" has entered my shorthand language with my friends to mean: something made for superficial purposes only, with no substance behind it.

  • haha best 5 seconds today!

  • Well lens flair was a problem, but an insignificant problem. The real problem with the movie was that it was made by J.J. Abrams. Apparently that jerk holds all of his audiences in contempt.

  • I was cringing at the very mention of a rumour that JJ Abrams would direct Star Trek.

  • On the DVD, there should be an option menu called "Lens Flare" and the ability to toggle it on or off, like subtitles.

  • They can't. The lensflares were made by people off-camera shining spot lights into the lenses. Besides it wouldn't really improve the film.

  • LOL. I believe your joke-meter is broken. Replace the batteries and rescan.

  • @adnbek On the DVD there ought to be a menu option for "Disgrace 40 years of rich sci-fi folklore" that you can also toggle on/off too

  • Hehé. Pity that sound smells bad.

  • LEEENNSSE FLAAARREE! XD

  • @xva100 Wow, quoting the video for likes works even if there's only ONE FUCKING LINE IN THE WHOLE GOD DAMNED THING.

  • @profilescythe Don't blame the guy who quoted it...blame the people that voted.

  • LOL

  • Yeah I noticed alot of lens flare in that movie as well.
