He wound up winning the belt a month later at Backlash anyway, so why not let him win it at WrestleMania instead?
People give this WrestleMania WAY too much shit. MITB was good. Not great, but good. Jericho vs. The Legends was alright; if it was just Jericho and Ricky Steamboat, it would have been vastly better. Matt vs Jeff Hardy is ab underrated match and was thoroughly entertaining.

One of the worst decisions in Wrestlemania history, Orton should have walked out with the WWE title, you can tell by the crowd reaction, that no one wanted to see HHH retain. This is on par with WM9, WM11 and WM18 as the worst ways to end Wrestlemania.

@HBKvsTazMUDM I don't know about that, but you have to remember that prior to WrestleMania, Randy Orton was dominant for the vast majority of the time, along with Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes. If Orton won the Championship here, the storyline would've been more one-sided in his favour.
@ryhorn100 But usually when you have built the heel so much like that, it makes them look like they're going to get their asses wooped in the match because of all the shit they did to their opponent leading up. Like take Cole vs. Lawler from WM 27. Cole was a dick for so long to Lawler you assumed Lawler was going to kick his ass at WM. But in reality Cole got a DQ victory, which made for a more interesting storyline between the two. That's what they should have done with Orton vs. HHH at WM 25.

@HBKvsTazMUDM Well this was the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania and it was in the main event, so it wouldn't have been appropriate for a heel as Randy Orton to close it with a win. After all, this was the only PPV in 2009 where Triple H beat Orton. Every other PPV encounter at Royal Rumble, Backlash, The Bash and Night of Champions saw Orton win.

WM 5-Hogan (the face) goes over. WM 10-Bret Hart (the face goes over). WM 15-Stone Cold (the face) goes over. WM 20-Chris Benoit (the face) goes over. If at WM 25, RKO (the heel) shakes it up a bit and we actually see a heel go over at WM.

Austin turning heel was the reason he went over. Orton was already an established heel. True, he dominated 2009, but what about him changed? They only started calling him "The Viper" during the Cena fued. I wouldn't even say he dominated 2009. He & John Cena went back and forth the entire year.

And he also lost the Iron Man match, which made him look weak, Being Cena-fied doesn't make you elevated, Plus the following year he turned face. So a victory here would have still been pointless.
@TheChaserofSouls Orton did not look weak in the Iron man match because at the 2 minute mark he got an RKO and the ref was down so he would've won if the ref had been up but Cena shoulder blocked him by mistake. Also a victory at WM is never pointless because if you win at WM that means you're the real deal and a top player in WWE. Orton was a top player by this point but if he had won here, he would have become THE top guy.
@HBKvsTazMUDM When Jack Swagger won MITB was he the real deal? No. JoMo winning in the 6-Person Tag Match did he go on to be a big time player? Not so much. Orton didn't need to win here because he was already a top player. He reached new heights after this despite losing. He went on to defend his WHC this year at multiple PPV's and won. And to be honest at this point there's already been a person named THE guy. John Cena. And I don't see anyone taking that place any time soon.

@ryhorn100 I mean I guess traditionally a face should go over at WrestleMania but Orton thrived in 2009 and won the belt a month later at Backlash. I think he would have really looked great with a win here.

@HBKvsTazMUDM I don't know about that, but you have to remember that prior to WrestleMania, Randy Orton was dominant for the vast majority of the time, along with Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes. If Orton won the Championship here, the storyline would've been more one-sided in his favour.

@ryhorn100 But usually when you have built the heel so much like that, it makes them look like they're going to get their asses wooped in the match because of all the shit they did to their opponent leading up. Like take Cole vs. Lawler from WM 27. Cole was a dick for so long to Lawler you assumed Lawler was going to kick his ass at WM. But in reality Cole got a DQ victory, which made for a more interesting storyline between the two. That's what they should have done with Orton vs. HHH at WM 25.

@HBKvsTazMUDM Well this was the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania and it was in the main event, so it wouldn't have been appropriate for a heel as Randy Orton to close it with a win. After all, this was the only PPV in 2009 where Triple H beat Orton. Every other PPV encounter at Royal Rumble, Backlash, The Bash and Night of Champions saw Orton win.

@ryhorn100 Yeah I get that it was WM 25 but wouldn't have been interesting that at this landmark, milestone show we were left with something different? WM 1-Hogan and Mr. T (the faces) go over. WM 5-Hogan (the face) goes over. WM 10-Bret Hart (the face goes over). WM 15-Stone Cold (the face) goes over. WM 20-Chris Benoit (the face) goes over. If at WM 25, RKO (the heel) shakes it up a bit and we actually see a heel go over at WM.

Austin turning heel was the reason he went over. Orton was already an established heel. True, he dominated 2009, but what about him changed? Same stuff the entire year and thats when he was Cena-fied so to speak.

@TheChaserofSouls Orton became a lot more demonic during 2009. They started calling him the Viper instead of the Legend Killer because his cockiness had chilled out and now he was a predator type wrestler, one who waited in the depths but was always ready to strike at any time.

They only started calling him "The Viper" during the Cena fued. I wouldn't even say he dominated 2009. He & John Cena went back and forth the entire year.

@TheChaserofSouls I disagree. Orton and Cena went back and forth for the remainder of the year but it was Orton who looked strong coming out of that feud even though he eventually lost. Orton was catapulted to the next level of his character in 2009 while Cena was the same old guy.

@HBKvsTazMUDM The Summerslam victory was weak. Orton lost in the I Quit match which made him look weak. And he also lost the Iron Man match, which made him look weak, Being Cena-fied doesn't make you elevated, Plus the following year he turned face. So a victory here would have still been pointless.

@TheChaserofSouls Orton did not look weak in the Iron man match because at the 2 minute mark he got an RKO and the ref was down so he would've won if the ref had been up but Cena shoulder blocked him by mistake. Also a victory at WM is never pointless because if you win at WM that means you're the real deal and a top player in WWE. Orton was a top player by this point but if he had won here, he would have become THE top guy.

@HBKvsTazMUDM When Jack Swagger won MITB was he the real deal? No. JoMo winning in the 6-Person Tag Match did he go on to be a big time player? Not so much. Orton didn't need to win here because he was already a top player. He reached new heights after this despite losing. He went on to defend his WHC this year at multiple PPV's and won. And to be honest at this point there's already been a person named THE guy. John Cena. And I don't see anyone taking that place any time soon.

@TheChaserofSouls - Alright, I'm gonna settle this. The reformed DX had a running gag going about Steph getting pregnant and wondering who the father is because in kayfabe, Triple H and Steph broke up. Of course, in real life, Triple H and Steph married in 2003.
Triple H would say stuff like, "I dunno who the father is, but I bet he has a huge c-" and HBK would cut him off.
