Ricky was pretty ordinary (got better with age), but the girls ate him up and kissed his record covers every night. His session guy and all of his other band members were really fine, and he was managed and promoted brilliantly by his dad who mostly chose all his songs. I wish more singers would do covers of Ricky's songs because they're mostly great songs that could be nailed by a talented performer. And don't tell me how great he was. I won't be convinced.
Ricky is one of the Artist I would have loved to have recorded in the Old sun Studio at 706 Union. the echo and sound with him and the guitars would have been fantastic. But time is passed and so has all the GOOD MUSIC.
those other guys in the band dont get much credit do they. well I guess James Buton was pretty famouse, but I dont even know the names of the others. ♥
There seems to be 2 or 3 versions of "Believe What You Say". I have original record album with background singers echoing Ricky. Also Greatest Hits CD with only partial backup singing and this version, Ricky sings alone. Anyone have any info on this as to why?
In my younger days I could not hold still to this song. I am not musically inclined in any way, but I could remember every note, especially James Burton's great guitar. Who is the new guy on the left of the video? The drummer, Richie Frost, interacted extremely well with the audience. It seems they all smile a lot during their videos. I miss the old days. I have to say that Rick (not Ricky) got even better as he grew up.
A Top 5 hit for Ricky Nelson in April 1958. It was kept out of the top spot by The Platters (Twilight Time). I still have a hard time knowing that RN is no longer with us. Ricky, you gave us so much, and that legacy lives on in your sons, Gunner and Matthew. Thanks for the memories. We love you and miss you.
Dear marieren, this song is from 1958. At that time Ricky Nelson was 18 and James Burton - 19. Ricky Nelson was born May 8, 1940, and Burton - August 21 1939.
One of my all-time favorite Ozzie and Harriet Show Ricky clips, and there are lots on here. One thing...I sure wish someone could post this same clip, but with better audio. All these shows are out on DVD now. Thanks.
My God! He is REALLY good, along with his superb session men. If I were a young man in a band now, I would hang my head in respect to Rick Nelson, one more of those fantastic Nordics! (He is from solid Swedish stock.)
i knew he had it in him. in all of the ozzie and harriet videos he seems sort of bored when he sings. i heard that ozzie told him not to move when he sung because it was a "family show". i think thats why he was holding back right here.
sometimes you just cant help it. rockabilly moves you!
Yes that is the great James Burton too young to grow his signature side burns. In this song he provides what turns out to be one of the all-time greatest rockabilly solos.
