Check out the Pide Piper performance from about 1958 by Van Johnson where all the music is from Peer Gynt. They copied this look. Actually, Jerry Hines had his own dark red Mephisto costume, which I saw him wear twice. Very Victorian. He was a great actor and singer and person, RIP
His voice is one of the best I have ever heard and perfectly suitable for this role. I agree that the costume is, to say the least, dismal. Actually, I find to Robin Hood comparison quite accurate. Nonetheless, it must be stressed that his voice is remarkably strong. It emanates extremely powerful feelings.
It's very difficult to say which one is the best... Though I must say I come back to this interpretation all the time. Even though he looks like a muscular Robin Hood, it's a fact that this is how the devil was drawn, when impersonating a human being, in books at that time and earlier. But his singing is what I mostly care about. It's brilliant.:o)
Very interesting. Show me some pictures! (I'm not trying to discredit you or anything, I just want to see the pics of 16th Cen. Meph.)How did they draw girl demons? Oh, and he DOES look like Robin Hood!! lol
Tiene una voz impresionante, sin embargo el vestuario esta del asco, debe aparentar ser diablo y más bien parece el flautista de Hamelin. Y por otro lado también su interpretación esta medio amanerada la verdad. De todas maneras su voz impresiona.

Great bass, human being and a teacher.
my father has sang with Maestro Jerome Hines in "Faust" as Faust back in 1960s, it was an incredible experience, he said.

Hines looks more like a muscular Robin Hood than the Devil.
