God may be a 'superfluous' idea, if you believe that random mutation and selection, or 'the blind watchmaker' is synonymous with 'evolution' - meaning *some kind* of development over time. If you believe, as do quite a few biologists, many of them secular humanists, that that particular blind watchmaker is as plausible as an invisible pink unicorn then it isn't so clear.
Dawkins and his ilk both clarify and obfuscate. Darwin wasn't perfect, he layed the foundations of a theory which has been built on and improved over the years. Picking holes in what he said does not weaken evolution, in fact, picking holes in it is exactly what scientists have been doing from the second Darwin presented it. We recognise mistakes, and improve them with the best knowledge available to us today.

The theory of natural selection makes certain claims about evolution and concludes that all species came from a common origin in the past. Science doesn't have to examine every possible example to make a statement, it just has to set up a framework for evidence which can apply to any example. This is what Darwin did.
@chebob2009 i read the entire book, but it was back in 1982, so I admit my memory of it is a tad vague. However I DO remember the part that shocked me very well, and my concluding his conclusions fit in well with the racism extant at the time, promolgated by the wealthy slave traders.
He based the vast majority of the book upon studying, at great depth I thought, one particular island. I think we agree a lot more than it seems upon Darwin's importance, and correctness of his facts.
Well I'm not sure of which passage was racist but recall it was 1859, the entire world was a great deal more racist.
A lot of his work was based on the samples from the galapagos islands yes. It's unimportant though because he used this work to suggest a body of evidence, all of which has since been verified for all species ever found since. The universality of the genetic code, found after Darwin, also confirmed everything he'd predicted.
@pvelectric Despite the name "origin of life" his book regarding evolution never dealt with the creation of life. its intention was to explain the diversity on the planet and it succeeded in that. Natural Selection is key to evolution and I think you are really missing the whole point with what Evolution is about.

God may be a 'superfluous' idea, if you believe that random mutation and selection, or 'the blind watchmaker' is synonymous with 'evolution' - meaning *some kind* of development over time. They clarify because the ability of Darwin's mechanism to create novel complex life forms would have materialist metaphysical implications if true (which is nowhere near as plausible as they make out), and they obfuscate by conflating that mechanism with the evidence for a close connection between forms, and *some kind* of unfolding over time.

Part 1 Its an educational disgrace that 60 % do not believe in evolution. If they studied DNA looked at sequencing then they would see the facts.The double helix structure of a DNA chromosome. For all you creationists. I'll give one simple example of evolution. Not enough room for more. Have a look at the human skeleton at the base of the spine you have a tail bone. This is the remnant of a pseudo gene which has lost its copying of protein ability. It is shared only by common inheritance.

Darwin wasn't perfect, he layed the foundations of a theory which has been built on and improved over the years. Picking holes in what he said does not weaken evolution, in fact, picking holes in it is exactly what scientists have been doing from the second Darwin presented it. We recognise mistakes, and improve them with the best knowledge available to us today.
Christianity on the other hand took iron age knowledge, and then ignored all the learning and progress of the past 2000 years.

Not at all. Have you even read it? And how could he have observed the origin of any species?
The theory of natural selection makes certain claims about evolution and concludes that all species came from a common origin in the past. Science doesn't have to examine every possible example to make a statement, it just has to set up a framework for evidence which can apply to any example. This is what Darwin did.

@chebob2009 i read the entire book, but it was back in 1982, so I admit my memory of it is a tad vague. However I DO remember the part that shocked me very well, and my concluding his conclusions fit in well with the racism extant at the time, promolgated by the wealthy slave traders.
He based the vast majority of the book upon studying, at great depth I thought, one particular island. I think we agree a lot more than it seems upon Darwin's importance, and correctness of his facts.

Well I'm not sure of which passage was racist but recall it was 1859, the entire world was a great deal more racist.
A lot of his work was based on the samples from the galapagos islands yes. It's unimportant though because he used this work to suggest a body of evidence, all of which has since been verified for all species ever found since. The universality of the genetic code, found after Darwin, also confirmed everything he'd predicted.

@pvelectric Despite the name "origin of life" his book regarding evolution never dealt with the creation of life. its intention was to explain the diversity on the planet and it succeeded in that. Natural Selection is key to evolution and I think you are really missing the whole point with what Evolution is about.
The Big Bang is a whole separate theory.
The theory on how life first came about is called Abiogenesis or Biogenesis. I dont think he was racist by explaining human diversity.

In a recent poll, only 10-12% were Creationists/Young Earthers compared with 50% supporting Evolution. The remainder couldn't care less or simply weren't interested enough in Religion or Science to have an opinion one way or the other.
