I was born in Hattiesburg, MS, lived there 18 years, have since lost my accent from living among the Yankees too long (who think they don't have an accent). When I return to visit family, I can tell they sound very different from me (as y'all do), but if I try and imitate it after being there a day I sound like some idiot in a Hollywood movie. It annoys me, but time and relocation does that. p.s. I say buggy, soft drink, fixin', but my parents say commode.
@WarriorFifth ohh, k i get it, i probably seem really stupid but i'm from Canada and trying to make myself be able to have a not- totally disgusting Mississippi accent for drama class soo....
People are not dumb in MS. Our grading scale was different than other states for the longest. Our grading scale was actually harder. I reckon the people who thought we were dumb should actually do more research. I freakin love OLE MISS. Great school.
I always wondered what it is like to live in Mississippi. I live in California and people said life in both states are different but the way you talk does sound almost the same haha
@PoloBear39 Wow!!!!! You really need to get a life these comments are so old. Me and my friend were just joking around grow up this is like from 2 years ago. And you really shouldn't knock on a place till you been there makes you seem immature just words of advice take it if you want I don't really care.
Lol I'm from Massachusetts, here we call it Soda, and if we say, "Bring out a Coke", we mean a Coke :o We're not as different as we're pitched to be in the south, it seems :p
you not from the deep south... lol.. hattisburg is not deep south. You have to go a little futhur but you are right we do not all have a country accent
I live in SC, we have 3 accents here, the upstate, midlands, and the coast. The accents are very diverse in the south, even within one state. We have been invaded by so many yankee transplants ie: damn yankees we are becoming like California, no accent. Having a southern accent doesn't make you a hillbilly, they live in the mountains, they have their own speaking style. To be blunt though you 2 don't sound like you are from MS I believe ya'll are puttin on airs, or watchin too much mtv.
Lived in Natchez for a over a year, back in the early 1990s, and I distinctly remember my teacher calling to entire class' attention that I had a "northern" accent. I don't think anyone really paid attention until she brought it up.
@PoloBear39 and MoncefGridda .I have a word of advice for you. Breanna and I just wanted to make a funny video. That is all. Calling all people from Mississippi fat and dumb is very wrong. I want to be in the FBI when I grow up- am I stupid? I I have all A's- call me dumb. I am a size 0- call me fat. I go to an elite private school- call me poor. Now, I am NOT by any means calling myself or Breanna perfect, but we are not what is typically thought of as a Mississippian. Get your facts straight.
@PoloBear39 Purposefully, not purposely. Anyway, don't knock someone about being smart when you exercise poor grammar and spelling, too. -Arkansas just schooled you. Love my Mississippi "folk." My aunt lives in Hernando, Miss. My cousin goes to Ole Miss.
No I ment what I said. I wasn't saying I'm as southern as u can get. Because that is not true at all. I ment I was as south as u can get in Mississippi since I live on the coast. Duh maby u should listen to what we said. And I know we were that was the point we were trying to prove not everyone talks really bad but then we kept doing it haha but really nice
What you have to realize is that there's a HIGHER PERCENTAGE of obese people in Mississippi than other states, it doesn't simply matter that there are obese people everywhere b/c there are significantly more in Mississippi. Just like there's a higher percentage of HS dropouts and low ACT/SAT scores, low IQ scores, 0 scientific achievements, and high percentages of religious belief, high percentages of incarceration, high percentages of crime.
Your standards for substantiating why Mississipi is not "noneducated" (surely, you mean uneducated) is by stating that you two are on the honor roll. It seems as though you don't realize that's an accomplishment relative to others at your school. Mississippi still has the worst facts in the Union in regards to educational standards and incarceration, religious beliefs, etc. Not an intelligent bunch. You're skinny now b/c you're young, but you'll get fatter than normal and obesewhen you're older.
I have been searching for that thick, enchanting southern accent. Unfortunately, due to communication proliferation throughout the US generally coming from the North (if one classifies California as the North, as I do), southern dialects have died. You'll find your elders (like G-ma) still have accents.
Southerners also tend to say words that end in "o" with an "uh" sound...like "winda" instead of "window".... "tomata" intead of "tomato" or "potata" instead of "potato."
@TheCrazygirls16 they do it on purpose b/c they hate the south. Mostly it is pure jealousy. Many of them have no real culture, (the way the south has special history, literature, music, foods, trajectory to america, and much more). Don't ever listen or let it bother you. They are jealous. They really are fat and stupid, lol!
@MrWaspman2006 thats insane, its really hard here. you need to have a job that requires one, like in los angeles. you need to be a banker, a cop, a judge, etc...i mean as an american you can have one no matter what, but no one can get a carrying license lol
@TransMansable THANK GOD FOR THE 2ND ADMENDMENT THEN--THATS ALMOST UNCONSTITUTIONAL THAT YOU PEOPLE IN NEW YORK OE L.A. HAVE TO BE A COP OR A JUDGE TO OWN A GUN!!--RIDICULOUS!!
Everybody always has an accent. In this case, they spent more time speaking with a mid-western English, which is the standard English for North America (as compared, to say, Queen's English in the UK).
