  • Why not copared with older audi100, compared cars looks older than that audi100, stupid germans

  • I'll choose audi or mers/// even BMW is not so perfect////

  • Mercedes seems to be made of Krupp steel...

  • This is 10 km/h slower than EuroNCAP, and with no deformable barrier, so these results can not be compared to modern crash tests

  • A grande maioria não presta. Por um momento pensei que fossem carros nacionais.

  • fd

  • By the way, this test was made with only 54,8km/h not 64km/h like the new crash tests.

  • The german cars here are actually the most unsafe a can not believe they lied even in th 80's....

  • @legioner9

What are you talking about? The german cars of that video did the best job.. (Mercedes, BMW, Audi)

The others were bad, only the Volvo was also good.

  • @mcrubar : Yes, I agree with you, the german cars in the video did the best job, but actually there are no such big safety difference between all these 9 cars at all...

  • @legioner9 Really?:) In the case of the Audi you can not see any distortion of passanger cell(as well as the W124), but the others will kill you especially the Honda.

  • @legioner9 what are you talking about? The German cars in this video performed excellent

  • For you that doubt Volvo safety, search for volvo crash test ramp.

    Volvo 740 VS Opel Ascona

  • those damn steering wheels.

  • Of course, the Mercedes did the best. The safety cage remained almost entirely intact. Volvo, Audi and BMW did nearly as well. Just goes to show how far ahead of the curve these companies are when it comes to safety. The IIHS and EuroNCAP offset tests were essentially designed by Mercedes in the 70s when it began conducting offset tests on the W126 S-class, the first car in the world specifically designed to withstand this type of accident.

  • @japtraplex What are you talking about? The Mercedes did not do the best? The Audi did. And the BMW wwas VERY bad, not nearly as well as the Audi or Mercedes?

The Mercedes frame around the door bend a lot, while the Audi didnt at all. And the BMW frame even broke?

If the frame around the door bend at the Mercedes, and not the Audi, it means that the Mercedes frame would brake like on the BMW it i drove a bit faster, while the Audi probably wouldnt.

  • If only the IIHS was around back in the 80's. We might have had safer cars back then. All of these cars did awfully with the exception of the Audi (at least in structure) even at nearly 10mph slower than the IIHS does their tests.

  • @geterdonein01 BMW, audi Volvo and MErc did good. However have you seen car crashes of american 80s cars? They look safe and imposing but they are really unsafe.

And all of the four best cars have airbag as an option which make them very safe.

  • @geterdonein01 IIHS was around in the 1980s (founded in 1959)... but they didn't do offset crash testing until 1995.

  • I think the Audi had best results, look at the dummy in the merc, it slams into the steering wheel, while it doesent in the audi :P

  • @BrunostNOR But the steering wheel on de merc was made to absorb the energy and cushion the head when it gets into it that means it might don´t have a hard hit and in my opinion it was thw bes and the worst where de honda and nissan.

  • @mario022594 So are tgw Volvo steerng wheel. and has been i nall volvos since the 1973 140 facelift and upgrade.

  • I love the old BMW 5 and 7 series ^^

  • Now bend your knees and praise Mercedes!!!

  • These tests were conducted in late 1990. The speed was at 34MPH / 55KPH

It was carried out independently. What was different about these tests was that they were offset and at 34mph (instead of the full lap into a barrier at 30). It exposed real weakness in some of the cars and worse still for the manufactures all the results were published for the public in motor mags – something they were not used to in 1990. Needless to say some of the manufactures threw their toys out the pram over it all.

  • i drive a w124 200D.glad to see its decently safe :)

  • People care way too much about safety in cars. They should work on their driving skills instead of always relying on their car and its' electronic helpers to get them out of shitty situations.

  • I love the Mercedes 200 E Class!

  • Very good for Audi, mercedes, volvo,Bmw like always

  • These cars were subjected to a offset test 50% overlap at 35mph!

  • AUDI RULES!!!

  • Audi wins.

  • @hyundaixl That can be argued, as the video says that it is the "new" Audi 100 while the others are older models. I guess it is expectable that a new design performs better.

  • thank you for this!

  • None of those were big cars. The smallest car I have ever owned was a '98 Crown Victoria, and it is larger than all of these.

  • In europe are considered as big cars. In the USA are small.

  • @FURY1958 in the usa these are more of midsize to large now. they would have been small by 70s standards.

  • Audi forever

  • 54,8km/h

  • at what speed passed crash test ???

    56 km/h ?

  • Not sure, but the normal testing speed is around 64kph (40mph)...so these tests probably were set at that speed too.

  • @0cnpgs0 this is an older video..i think he is right about 56 kmh ;)

  • @optcomputer 54,8 km/h (0:55)

  • @optcomputer 54 km/h is said in the beginning.

  • @optcomputer Its exactly 54,1 kph. Im german so i understand that.

  • @rezenzone Thanks for your info - video updated.

  • Mercedes, Volvo and Audi, the three bests in 1992.

  • Yes, but there is Volvo 740, and MB 200E (not 750, 300E)

  • MERC and AUDI > everything else

  • Go Merc! Safe as a 2009 car in 1992.

  • Oh yes, they've come quite a long way...but for me it still isn't satisfactory; compare the latest Toyota Avenis to the Ford Mondeo. In the Euro NCAP tests, the A-pillar of the Mondeo didn't bend a millimetre. However, the A-pilalr of the Avenis bended quite a-bit considering it got the full 5 stars like the Mondeo. This means that in a collision at a greater velocity than 40mph (testing speed of Euro NCAP), or impact with a heavier vehicle (or both), the Avenis won't cope as well as the Mondeo.

  • @0cnpgs0 Ford got its safety from Volvo.

  • @UHF43 Maybe, maybe not. The end result is that it still has a more stable structure than the Avensis. But the case of the A-pillars not bending also applies to other cars of the same class, such as the Citroen C5 and Opel/Vauxhall Insignia (please don't tell me they got the safety from GM...).

  • @0cnpgs0 It's clear that Ford took advantage of Volvo's expertise. It's also clear that Opel european developments are exported to other GM brands.

  • @0cnpgs0 The most unsatisfactory thing is that cars are being designed ONLY to pass these silly NCAP tests, and not to withstand a true crash in real life conditions.

  • @ghostintheshelll Agreed...and it's not too difficult to see which cars are designed to do so as I wrote in an earlier post. However, IMO EuroNCAP should now move with the times and update their tests or add new tests to uncover any weaknesses of any car.

  • A good example of why all the idiots that have bought a japanese car shouldn't of.

  • However, you might consider that's been recorded in the stone ages and japanese car made considerable evolution, having achieved better marks than traditional european automobiles...

And that's for now. 'cause if we observ south-korean automobiles, we may predict they're the next ones to become... "golden class"(reliability, safety, economy...)

  • I think this is from the year I was born. I'll be 17 later this year. So it's not from the stone age.

  • Well, 17 years can mean alot to progress in many issues....

  • Yes.. I rode in a '78 Scout to preschool, in the front, with just a lap belt on. The Scout had a metal dashboard - if I had been in a major wreck I would have been f'd up. That was legal when I was 4 in 1997.

  • @cortinamatt and buy what ? german cars? haha yhea , all the german cars in this video done good , but ask yourself that : the german speaking and as i see making this crash test u think that they will show that the german cars are rubbish? i woudn't to tell you the truth ..... and one last thing , don't belive everything you see . cheers

  • @lianmix lol u just say that so that you can feel better driving your shitty car because your from greece and can't afford any better!! lol jk

  • @stonee206 maybe i can't afford to buy a big and flashy car but u can right? GOOD FOR YOURSELF. and another thing if anyone has the money to drive an expensive car this does not mean that he can tell if it's a good or a bad car . The last one my friend , you thing that the country that i live it manages my financial? i think not . So next time before you comment , think what you say and take off your blinkers for once ... i bet you have german car (if you have a real car !!!) ? . take care .-

  • @cortinamatt They got much better, now day but. must admitt :)

  • @cortinamatt I'm getting a 2008 Honda Accord as my first car, and I would do far better than even the driver of the Mercedes in a crash like this. Then again, the German cars did pretty flipping impressive back then. This video is from the year I was born lol.

    January 28, 2012 2:46 am

  • the honda crush like a tin can

  • that audi 100 was many times more new serie than the other cars -.-" ...

ohh i think opel omega rules we had one shield exclusive and nobody could follow us on the germany autoban and in the alps hill roads no mercedes no bmw's and NO audi's

oh and the japanese cars my father ever sayd japanese never could build a REAL CAR like ford volvo audi bmw mercedes or opel i think japanese should go fuck their self and the nations shoudn't let them building toy cars

  • mercedes rules..

  • And the winner is: Audi 100

  • Mercedes is always the best !!!

  • good that actually the airbag exist, and the best car of the video is the mercedes benz

  • mm cars looked better in the 80s

  • @volvo145 i'd say american cars look better from the 50s through the early 90s. Foreign cars look a little better from the late 80s to the early 2000s.

  • @grandcreator11 Well the US still produces 2-3 good looking cares. The Ford Crown Victoria and its derivatieves. The Mustang and the Challenger

    Also the military Hummer.

Europe and asia produses no good looking cars anymore. Not even Volvos Mercs audis and BMW look good anymore. At least Volvo an d BMW did up until -00.

Anyway for a dman good looking car, check ouit the Audi V8. Almost makes me as a devout volvoist want to buy and Audi..

  • @volvo145 yeah your right about the US still producing the 2-3 good looking 1s, including the Mustang, Challenger, & the Camaro... I say the the New '08-'11 Malibu is a damn fine car. My favorite Malibu's range from '70-'83 though they originated in '65. & some from the late '90s, but i didnt like the '04-'06. But the main car they REALLY made ugly & shitty now is the new models of the Chevy Impala. *smh* & GM suck for the idea of getting rid of Pontiac, & Oldsmobile & so on
