probably one of the mostunderrated fighter, i didn't know about him till theother day, but heis very cool, being 5 ft 7 and knocking out people at 6 feet and above, also, he was the first fighter to accept a challenge from a coloured fighter which at that time believeit or not was unheard of, probably in my top 10 favourites :)
This fight was rumored to be a fake. O'brien later "confessed" who took money to try not to win. He got his due late in career at the hands of Ketchel and Langford.
I would have loved to see the O'Bien - Jack Johnson fight - a great fight that doesn't get the historical attention. As for Jeffries - I didn't realize he got so overweight so fast. His last fight was '04. Burns deserved the victory.
Burns had 8 straight KO's in title defenses. Larry Holmes also had 8 straight KO's in a row in Heavyweight title defenses. That might be the record for Heavyweights, not sure. Roberto Duran, as a Lightweight, had 10 straight KO's in defenses.
Ali was a mover, not a runner. I distinguish between the two. Moving is strategic... Robinson, Ali, Leonard would use movement to out box their opponents and win fights. Running is basically doing all you can not to get hit, even if it means losing rounds.
lol...yeah sure...ali was an ass, when he wasnt running n scaping he just grabbed his opponents arms to not get hit...but it was ali...he had to win cause ppl wanted to c that so nobody separated him...why everybody is so blind to c he was just a lie???
You don't know anything about boxing. Ali hold? He held no more than Jack Johnson or Lennox Lewis or a lot of fighters. And calling Ali a runner is nonsense, was Robinson a runner? And Ali also fought many fights toe to toe.
He was a damn good puncher/boxer, but is not the hardest puncher of all time. Max Baer and Jack Johnson could hit harder. Robinson was the best, or one of the best fighters of all time.
jhs1958: I've read newspaper accounts of this fight. O'Brien ran pretty much the whole way. He was not at all interested in mixing it up with Burns. A draw was a very charitable decision. I'll stick with my assessment of "pitiful."
I know. And some call O' Brien an 'All Time Great'. Yet they deride Burns for giving a black man a chance.
Burns record for consecutive KOs in TDs still stands. Five foot seven... 175 lbs... made ATG O'Brien run like a biatch... told Jack Johnson to bring it... yet commited the unforgivable sin of being Canadian.

So what? Running is a style for the boxer types. Ali ran in most of his fights too.
