It's simply illegal. There was a debate some time ago when people said that if they wanted to die (when they're old, very sick, etc), then they should be allowed to do so (legally).

My sister had private health insurance two years ago when the lawyers for her HMO denied her life extending treatments and she died. They gave her methadone for pain and sent her home.

When I had colon cancer many years ago I had surgery and chemo and my employers health insurance paid for about a third. It took me ten years to pay it off. I am a combat Vietnam vet and I COULD have gone to the VA and had the same treatments from the SAME doctors and paid NOTHING. NOW is the time for a change

I am not into suing people. If someone shot my wife or destroyed my car, I might sue someone. But I do not think it good form to sue the doctors that saved my life, although I give great credit to faith in God and his mercy. I did think about suing the internal specialist who told me, "No one 34 years old gets colon cancer". He was wrong and I used to remind him when I ran into him on the elevator on the way to get chemo. It would be reward enough if he never said that to anyone again.

If you get medical treatment from the VA you must APPLY for it and then wait for their approvals. I AM receiving VA care now and it took fourteen months for the approval. They are overloaded. NOW it takes two years and in Houston they have a MILLION claims pending. Congress did not provide staffing or funding to meet the volume.

My oncologist who was also a VA doctor, told me if I got hit by a bus in front of the VA hospital to drag myself somewhere else due to...paperwork.

Thanks for your sentiments. The truth is that the HMO she had simply did not want to pay for it. Even though the treatments that would have extended her life were generally accepted as effective by the industry with substantial research to back it up, the "DEATH PANELS" of her HMO had NOT accepted those as effective treatments. Her doctor & even the head of the Oncology department lobbied the HMO to accept her treatment, she was denied. She tried to save money to pay herself but died first.
