zoo are different today than they were in the 50s and 60s..things have changed..I'm glad they expanded the elephant exhibit.giving them more room and more elephants..how are people supposed to learn to appreciate animals...seeing them on tv or movies isnt the same as being in the presence of such amazing animals..
Oh, please Betty! You need to get to a doctor and be evaluated for Alzheimer's Disease. Studies have shown there is no connection between seeing an elephant in a zoo and contributing in any meaningful way to elephant conservation. The money for the new exhibit could support the Amboseli Elephant Research in AFrica for 20 years. If you really cared about conservation you wouldn't want to keep Billy confined like a prisoner at a zoo.
AllanFan...if it is dangerous to place male elephants with others, why are they building thsi exhibit?? Do you people even know where they GET these elephants from?? Some are rescued, but a lot of them are basically stolen from the wild and taken away from their herd. ( family) Look it up...it's true.
Bound is correct. Listen to people who research and study facts about elephants. i am one of them, and I believe Bound is as well. Betty White may have helped to raise a lot of money for the zoo, but she and Slash know very little about what elephants really need. Only animal sanctuaries can provide what they need.
Your information is inaccurate. The term is MUSTH, NOT MUST. Look it up. And while you're at it look up your false info about bull elephants living in solitude. They may stray from the herd because of competition from the larger bulls but they are never out of sight from the herd.
bound, allanfan20 is correct. male elephants live mostly solitary lives, though the females live in groups. even as males grow older, they stray little by little, until they are on their own.

Priceless! Two extremely ignorant generations coming together to spew poorly thought out soundbites and false information. (Both well meaning, but still very ignorant to what is really happening at the zoo.) NOTHING scientific or from actual research but rather emotional and anecdotal pleas.
Lavender, Billy is a male elephant. Perhaps you're not aware of this, but it's quite natural for male elephants to lives their lives alone after they have matured. They are usually kicked out of their herds once they reach adult hood.
As a matter of fact, it's quite dangerous to place certain male elephants with other elephants b/c they periodically reach a state of mind called MUST, which makes them extremely aggresive.

Where do you people get your information, Betty and Slash? It is a fact that trying to breed elephants in captivity has been unsuccessful...this applies to ALL animals in captivity!...This poor elephant, Billy is suffering from neurosis and loneliness and bobs his head up and down all day. If the zoo cared they would NEVER have left a social creature like an elephant alone in a small enclosure for this long!! You both need to read up and educate yourselves. I am surprised at you, Betty!
