I like the cute and happy Flandre... The whole "I'm going to eat your soul and use you skin as Christmas stocking" attitude isn't as good for making friends...
It's videos like this that make me appreciate the fact that raocow is willing to skip parts of his LPs. I've seen a couple LPers who won't edit out a second of their gameplay, and something like that would end up dragging out the series like you wouldn't believe...
Flandre is playing Wrecking Crew with you - it sort of makes sense that the "secret inhabitant" of the Scarlet Devil Mansion would be guesting as a little-known game's reference. The goal of Wrecking Crew is to clear out all the bricks without getting killed by enemies, so maybe focus on destroying the bricks and avoiding Flandre?
If you ever play Megamari, there's a couple stages that are pretty much "climb up this staircase"
There's one where its all vertical, jump up the right, jump up the left. Then another one its just jump up the right. Twice. Of course, there's other parts, too, and in that game at least the screen is filled with bullets and enemies, so its a bit more exciting.
In general, though, I guess its a problem with touhou? This and that are really the only games I've seen of them though
That's really not a fair assumption to make. The actual games in the Touhou series, MegaMari and this were made by completely different developers. Also there are certainly stairs in MegaMari but they aren't nearly as overused as you make it sound like they are.
Also Touhou doesn't really have stages the way these fangames do. I mean sure a lot of the levels actually are just going up a staircase but that's just a case of the background looping, it doesn't affect the gameplay.
This game kind of reminds me of the VIP4 series, it has some good levels, but it also has some terrible levels just around world 4. Only in VIP4 it was a collab and to be expected. The good levels in VIP4 were better than the good levels in this, though. Still, not a bad game, just makes a lot of really bad design choices in lieu of making references to Touhou.
I still love you, Raocow, but I'm getting to the point where I'm skipping a lot of these videos. This game seems to have run out of steam. We've seen all the enemies, there don't seem to be any neat platforming gimmicks, and the level design has become tedious and uninteresting. At least I'm still enjoying the boss fights with their classic Nintendo homages.
7:33 - They throw random enemies anywhere. It's not natural for a hovering planet to be inside a building.
That boss seems familiar to that Brutal Mario boss who throws his wig, then you have to throw it back at him and quickly pick up the purple block and throw it at him. The only difference, this boss actually moves (let alone runs).
That is the best level design ever, someone should translate it to a SMW romhack as the only level and submit it to smwcentral, it would become a featured hack instantly.
Running away is a very good option, Raocow, as is listening to PmarJ's slightly mysterious tip.
It might also help to watch a few videos OF Wrecking Crew, of which the Flandre boss fight is a homage of. I guess, being ABSURDLY POWERFUL and being kept in the basement, they couldn't give Flandre a normal boss fight.
And yes, it's pronounced like Flandres, in French tongue.
...Imagine that the background that looks similar to the brick columns is not just background but something else, and that making architecture collapse isn't good.
Also, I think having a stage of just staircases in the Scarlet Devil Mansion is a running gag with Touhou fangames or something on in the background of the inside of the mansion in the original there's an entire level of staircases, then another of hallways, thus represented here.

Clever Flash game reference there.

@POOPTURTLE I love that game. I've played it at least 4 times.

Wow, Flan is a beast here. They could've at least let you hit her back considering how adamant she is about chasing you.
On another note, the endless stair motif reminds me of level 5 from Perfect Cherry Blossom, which had a similar backdrop, only outdoors.

The level design in this game is really inconsistent in terms of difficulty. It even varies within the level itself. :P

So far we have only seen raocow fighting 1/4 of Flandre strength. Doesn't she look adorable with that helmet and that Lævateinn hammer?
Don't waste your time thinking you can beat her with drill jumps, she got a helmet after all!

A game with great bosses is awesome. A game that neglects level design for great bosses isn't awesome.
At least, there's raocow.

It is. The levels are still dickishly evil, but still better.

Hakugyokurou has, arguably, the best level designs in the game, and Eientei would beat it if not for one particular death-in-a-can stage.

Let's be honest, I'm pretty much playing for the classic Nintendo boss fights!
Go ahead and skip the 'level' updates, I won't mind at all. Hell, make the most of the fact that I write which stages are played to your adventage!
raocow 2 years ago 5
Kind of odd that a Mario-like platformer has funner bosses than stages. It's usually the other way around.

Well I'm a huge mario fan but i gotta admit the bosses are oftan repetative. Your right though it it kinda reversed.

Your logic doesn't work in Gensokyo, if the lady wants a hovering planet in her mansion, she will have one.
EvaristoH 2 years ago
That sounds more like just something Remilia would logic out, as opposed to all of Gensokyo.

So not even Raocow knows how to pronounce Flandre. I was hoping I could get some kind of clarification on that, what with it being a French name.
Ooohh wellll.

Didn't expect that.
