This weekend (Memorial Day, 2010) Taff, now two and a half years old, got the two placings at nursery trials he needed to qualify to run at the USBCHA national nursery trial in the fall.
Well it does help that the herd instinctively stays together. When training a herding dog, do they spend some time watching adults do it before their own training?
Their ability to herd sheep is bred in. They don't learn by watching others, they learn by doing and having their behavior molded by training. Some are much easier to train than others because the herding behaviors that are bred in are closer to the ideal that the trainer is seeking.
Every border collie has herding strengths and weaknesses. The trainer's job is to enhance the strengths and try to enhance the dog's ability to perform tasks that he or she is weak at.
I love that collie instinct to herd stuff and this 14 week old puppy prooves how strong that instinct can be! It'd be awesome to see my 14 week old collie doing this.
Interesting. My first pup I started at about this age but had to progress very slowly due to his immaturity. He had a ton of natural talent. My 2 1/2 year old girl is just starting out and is catching on very quickly, but I can't say how she would have been if I'd started her sooner.
Sooo cute :-)

What a nice youngster. He's really showing some cool flanking ability and he's pretty brave for a young tyke.
Just love watching this!

Regardless, this is one nice pup - very keen!

If you are out there.....it is training! But he is doing great. No reason to stop because of age.
