I work at a Safeway subsidiary (Dominick's). I know exactly what you mean about the stupid secret shopper program. A bunch of good shops get forgotten after one bad one. As yes, the morons come out at night, usually right before closing.

I can honestly say I officially hate people in general. After having worked for them 4 a couple of yrs now, all I have to show for it is a smoking habit, a drinking problem, & an addiction to sleep medication. Sometimes it just feels so hopeless. I hate them for creating more stress for their workers than necessary. Fuck Safeway.

I used to work at Safeway back in 2004-2005. It was okay, aside from plunging toilets.
I work at Superstore now and it's pretty good. Day goes by pretty fast, and I don't have to work weekends or evening shifts. Pretty much the same hours every week. Plus, I don't have to plunge toilets or mop floors because they have a different department that does that.
i work at slaveway right now, I stock shelves overnight, 8 hour shifts 4 nights a week. problem is, they have the most retarded management system so there are several different people who can tell you what to do who constantly contradict each other. Also, I have never gotten a saturday or sunday off, safeway backwards stands for You Always Work Every Friday And Saturday. fuck safeway

I have been working at a safeway in Oregon for a week now. It's so boring compared to my old movie theater job. I'm leaving in about an hour for my midnight-8:30 AM file maintanence shift. I'd rather be sleeping. Then I turn around tomorrow and have to check from 4-8 when I would STILL rather be sleeping. I have no life outside of slaveway. Hate it. Can't wait until I have enough money to open my cafe. I'LL be the boss of MYSELF.
I worked at Safeway for about 6 years and worked at 7 different stores around Oregon. Safeway, no matter what location (in my experience), is an incredibly god awful cesspool shit house of a dead end that will suck your life dry, and even indeed if you manage to escape, will leave you mortally wounded. You will not fear death, but welcome it, and you will know what true loathing feels like. If you are working there and reading this, Quit. Quit now.
I fucking hate my job. I used to have the coolest managers alive, but the SM we used to have got fired for fucking with payroll (changing around depts people worked in to make it look like he was scheduling correctly basically to give us enough help) and we got a new guy after him which was awesome too... THEN... :( He got transferred so now we have a stupid fucking cunt bitch that complains about FUCKING everything and never checks, so I have to. Fuck that.
My store is the most corrupt in my district here in Nebraska.. I work frozen foods by myself an I turn everything around in the department. I got it organized also on the service floor I'm excellent with costumers. But the thing is I don't get paid the wages I deserve which is like manager wages. I make 20 cents more then minimum wage. An my hours got cut now because I got blamed for another guys mistakes An I was putting in 40 hours now I work 21 this week. Also i worked at safeway for 2 years
I quit safeway a a few months ago because I had to go away to college and it's incredible just how much things have changed. I've lost 15 pounds and my self esteem has risen to an all time high. I've never had a more positive outlook on life. Safeway has really taught me to appreciate life.

I'm sorry you couldn't have worked at a store that treated you better. I work at the 2nd busiest store in Washington State, and it's probably the most laid back Safeway you'll run across. We have the most abysmal shop rating you've ever seen... but on the off chance that we get above an 8 the managers set up an indoor barbecue and make us pork ribs. :D

I work now at a small consulting office with a total of 5 other ppl and i get paid twice as much as i did at safeway, plus no union dues and the boss takes the employees out to lunch for their birthday! now tell me a safeway that does that for its employees? thats right, none. at slaveway ur just a number, they'll chew you up and spit you out.

I only offer help out when the situation calls for or when my manager is right there. Then again, we don't have secret shoppers or anything of the like.

I am so jealous. I get to quit slaveway in a few weeks. I never planned on working there for the summer, but there were no other near by places that were hiring so I got stuck with more grocery bagging. :( My break went over by two minutes and then manager told me to come to the office and just sit there and not say anything. They are such creeps.
The Safeway's in Chicago are called Dominicks. In the early morning, ALL of the help working there is obviously ILLEGAL. They constantly make vile sexual remarks about female customers. When you are shopping, you can hear them whistling across the store, obviously a code form them to go gawk at and make sickening sexually harassing remarks about women.

I worked at Randalls for over two years in h.s. and decided to quit after management accused me of theft. Human resources investigated the allegations and determined I didn't steal anything. I wasn't pleased with the way management handles employee concerns.

we have to do this stupid thing 3 times a day called The Huddle, and a person from each dept has to go meet at register 1 and we talk about service and the shops, sometimes this lasts 15 and 20 minutes, i think of it as a game , 10 points
Hazardway. the higher ups get a bonus to pay if you get perfect scores and gotta love the 4 hour swing shift.
I've gotten perfect scores on all 3 shops in 2 1/2 years. No real individual gratification. why is the person who makes public, even to customers, how much I hate that job getting the best scores?
Oh and isn't it great when somebody is writing a check, stops, looks around and says, "what store is this?"

Safeway use to be a good place to work, years ago. Now It sucks ! The superior service program they implemented years ago is a joke. It's not a fair system, you should be able to use your own discression when offering carry-outs etc. Also to qualify for any rewards, for service shops a person full-time in the floral shop for example has a way better chance at achieving gold status befor a part-time courtesy clerk.

Well, as far as I'm concerned... having this job allowed me to have a life and gave me the opportunity to change careers. After 4 1/2 years of working grocery, I am outta there! Besides... one venting video after that many years of service doesn't mean I have a shitty attitude... in fact, it means I have perseverance for even lasting that long :D

Try working your ass off making wedding arrangements for ungrateful people or getting called up to check so much you can't get anything done in your own department. That's what sucks. I have gone through being many things in the store, and I am telling the truth when I say being a courtesy clerk IS the easiest job in the whole store.

Ugh, I work at safeway I hate it. I'm a courtesy clerk. I always have to do like 5 things at once. Black baskets, carts, put aways, clean parking lot, do garbages etc etc. My boss is always giving me shit over carts. We lost a point because of the black baskets and yeah he sat me down in his office and gave me shit.
They are cutting hours in Chicago and we are going thur grocery contract talks .We are all union .Also they are trying to make here in Chicago use day vacations instead of weeks !Also they last time during our near grocery strike the company sent paid employees to the union strike vote meetings .The also used the media .Now there is rumor of management bonus based on the lack of Union Disputes!
CC from Hawaii here. I have some pretty cool managers at the store I am at, but I agree that sometimes a CC has to do a lot more of a load than they are supposed to simply because we have had CCs who either don't know how to do the job right since they are new or they just don't give a shit.

I work at Safeway. On sunday they got pissed at me and told me that "they're keeping their eye on me" because i wouldn't stay later then i was scheduled cuz another employ didn't show. So they're pretty much pissed at me for not staying to cover the other guy when i wasn't even scheduled to. They expect everyone to drop everything that they're doing just for them. The other guy didn't even get in trouble but they lecture me for not staying longer. I hate Safeway.

I work at Safeway in BC (Canada). When I first started working here I was so positive, but this place kills ur spirit fast. I just look around at other cashiers and see unhappy faces. Most customers are pretty good, but there are some real mean people that come in here. I would say, overall, custumer service is better in the US which is probably why they ride you guys so hard compared to us here. As for thanking by name and offering carryout, ours is probably one of the worst stores around.

When I started working at Safeway over 6 years ago, I was really positive, but it is this last year that I have lost some respect for the company because of all the crazy changes and labour cutbacks they've done. I find it hard to get motivation in such a depressing and negative environment.

Oh man I work at one in Honolulu. It sucks sooo much. They did this to me on my first week. I stock and check. We have hookers and crack heads. There are so many annoying things. Ahhh I could complain forever about safeway. Especially about things like when something won't scan then the customer thinks they're being clever when they say "It must be free haha." It wasn't funny 3 years ago it's not now.

The pecking order of management at Safeway is HORRID - Everybody above the Department heads treat each other like it's the end of the world when you don't kiss ass. I'm lucky to have a halfway responsive store manager.

I didn't offer help out on a shop, (the shopper was like 25ish and a guy, he had 4 bags and no cart, i didn't think he needed it.) and I got my ass handed to me by my boss. I wish I could quit but I need the money and the economy right now.. ugh.
I feel you girl. Don't mind the idiots like "qwash6563" who say crap like "oh, you are lucky to have a job." You know they would never last if they had to deal with masses of people like you do. I was at the Big S for over 15 years. I can assure you, no one has ever regretted leaving Safeway, everyone is happier after leaving. If the first job (after S) doesn't work out, just keep trying. Costco, for instance, pays better and treats employees better.

There was a time though when we had some awesome managers at my store, but not anymore, this one closing manager, leaves his shit all over the fucking floor for us to pick up, we're spendng more time doing other people's shit on nght crew, than our own, they want all this extra shit done, and I just can't do it anymore.
I work full-time, even though I asked to be part-time, at slaveway, there is only two of us on NIGHT CREW, and they won't hire anyone else for night crew, and it is a pain in the fucking ass, and when we don't get everythng done, they treat us like shit.. Then management goes off to order FUCKING SHIT LOADS of back-stock for their ends, they take em down, and it becomes ours, goes into the back-room, and they expect us to work it to the shelf, nothn on the ends sell and they pack it out.
My god, I hate Slaveway, even though I was just a lowly "Courtesy Clerk" that did more than 90% of the rest of the employees. (God bless the deli section, they made good food and were nice). You get treated like shit when you do one thing wrong, and you barely get any recognition when you do perfectly.

I used to work at Safeway back in 2004-2005. It was okay, aside from plunging toilets.
I work at Superstore now and it's pretty good. Day goes by pretty fast, and I don't have to work weekends or evening shifts. Pretty much the same hours every week. Plus, I don't have to plunge toilets or mop floors because they have a different department that does that.

I have been working at a safeway in Oregon for a week now. It's so boring compared to my old movie theater job. I'm leaving in about an hour for my midnight-8:30 AM file maintanence shift. My store is the most corrupt in my district here in Nebraska.. I work frozen foods by myself an I turn everything around in the department. I got it organized also on the service floor I'm excellent with costumers. But the thing is I don't get paid the wages I deserve which is like manager wages. I make 20 cents more then minimum wage. An my hours got cut now because I got blamed for another guys mistakes An I was putting in 40 hours now I work 21 this week. Also i worked at safeway for 2 years

I quit safeway a a few months ago because I had to go away to college and it's incredible just how much things have changed. I've lost 15 pounds and my self esteem has risen to an all time high. I've never had a more positive outlook on life. Safeway has really taught me to appreciate life.

We have the most abysmal shop rating you've ever seen... but on the off chance that we get above an 8 the managers set up an indoor barbecue and make us pork ribs. :D

I never planned on working there for the summer, but there were no other near by places that were hiring so I got stuck with more grocery bagging. :( My break went over by two minutes and then manager told me to come to the office and just sit there and not say anything. They are such creeps.

The Safeway's in Chicago are called Dominicks. In the early morning, ALL of the help working there is obviously ILLEGAL. They constantly make vile sexual remarks about female customers. Safeway use to be a good place to work, years ago. Now It sucks ! The superior service program they implemented years ago is a joke. It's not a fair system, you should be able to use your own discression when offering carry-outs etc. Also to qualify for any rewards, for service shops a person full-time in the floral shop for example has a way better chance at achieving gold status befor a part-time courtesy clerk.

I work at Safeway. On sunday they got pissed at me and told me that "they're keeping their eye on me" because i wouldn't stay later then i was scheduled cuz another employ didn't show. So they're pretty much pissed at me for not staying to cover the other guy when i wasn't even scheduled to. They expect everyone to drop everything that they're doing just for them. The other guy didn't even get in trouble but they lecture me for not staying longer. I hate Safeway.

I work at Safeway in BC (Canada). When I first started working here I was so positive, but this place kills ur spirit fast. I just look around at other cashiers and see unhappy faces. Most customers are pretty good, but there are some real mean people that come in here. I would say, overall, custumer service is better in the US which is probably why they ride you guys so hard compared to us here. As for thanking by name and offering carryout, ours is probably one of the worst stores around.

I agree with you. When I started working at Safeway over 6 years ago, I was really positive, but it is this last year that I have lost some respect for the company because of all the crazy changes and labour cutbacks they've done. I find it hard to get motivation in such a depressing and negative environment.

I've been at Safeway for quite a while now in northern california at 998 and we go through the same shit. I work day stock and what i cant stand is there so fucking worried about customer service and making checkout success that all the departments suffer. Dairy , produce , beverage. Then when you cant get your job done you get bitched out. NO SHIT if i wasnt checking all day I could get some shit done. Second person in line and call for another checker FUCK YOU !!!!!!!!

Oh man I work at one in Honolulu. It sucks sooo much. They did this to me on my first week. I stock and check. We have hookers and crack heads. There are so many annoying things. Ahhh I could complain forever about safeway. Especially about things like when something won't scan then the customer thinks they're being clever when they say "It must be free haha." It wasn't funny 3 years ago it's not now.

man i totally get what you mean when you said you have to ask someone for help with 2 bags that happens to me alot and i've had it where it's some big guy and i asked him if he needed help out and he looks at me like WTF. and i'm think to myself yeah i know you don't need the help with your bag of bread and bag of apple pie but i have to ask you anyway.

i work at slaveway too! i totally agree with what you said about if the employees aren't happy then the customers won't be happy either. i say that all the time! however, i don't get little stars when i do good on a shop.. i don't even get a "good job". i only get the take me into the office when i do poorly. nice eh?

HAHA we get actually pins that are stars you get stickers lol EPIC FAILZ oh and ive gotten shopped once in my year of working there, and i got all 4 NO and one YES and that was order packed with care and your a checker??? omg stop complaining checking in not bad, i work night crew and dairy and i merchandise. Checking has no physical strains like night crew. cept wrists, safeway does suck agreed but still go back to being a CC and see whats up :)

So are you agreeing with me or telling me not to complain? For your information, i work in floral, dairy, produce, overnight stocking, overnight tags, customer service, AND checking. I have a right to complain about one LITTLE area of my job. forgive me for venting a bit. And, no thanks, i was a CC for 1 1/2 years, I'm done with that... they have it easy nowadays. If you are going to reprimand me, at least have the courtesy to read the description and realize that I am not that mad anymore.

Hey try working at 2am. its not the best place to work. we get treated like crap by idiotic people who think we dont know how to do our job. we get some of the worst customers in the world. i could go all day bitching about the stories our deli clerks have had through out the 2 years ive worked there.

Ya, Ive done all the shifts you can think of. Its ok now though. I don't let it bother me all too much anymore... ive got the rest of my life to worry about now, so i wont let a few petty customers bring me down... but the stories i have about customers will last me a lifetime ;)

I know what you mean, I work at slaveway too and am on suspention for that stupid b.o.b program! It's all good though cuz I filled grievance whith the union and am trying to get paid for this week!

I'm working at Safeway and getting into the Retail Leadership Development program and, hey, when your bosses treat you like shit, understand that they're getting their asses handed to them constantly by the district managers in those conference calls.
The pecking order of management at Safeway is HORRID - Everybody above the Department heads treat each other like it's the end of the world when you don't kiss ass. I'm lucky to have a halfway responsive store manager.

Yeah I know how you feel, I'm a checker at Store 1255. I hate this fucking job. Everything you said is basically the same here. I didn't offer help out on a shop, (the shopper was like 25ish and a guy, he had 4 bags and no cart, i didn't think he needed it.) and I got my ass handed to me by my boss. I wish I could quit but I need the money and the economy right now.. ugh.

I feel you girl. Don't mind the idiots like "qwash6563" who say crap like "oh, you are lucky to have a job." You know they would never last if they had to deal with masses of people like you do. I was at the Big S for over 15 years. I can assure you, no one has ever regretted leaving Safeway, everyone is happier after leaving. If the first job (after S) doesn't work out, just keep trying. Costco, for instance, pays better and treats employees better.

dude i work at vons and we deal with the same crap. like wtf. no one actually goes to a store for service they just want to be cheep and pay as little as they can for food. i mean seriously, look at walmart they literally have no service. lines suck, looks like hell butpeople go for low prices. so wtf do we have to care if we didnt greet someone who is there minding thier own business.

They're expecting us to work all the back-stock when we only have TWO people, usually I am by myself two nights a week.. It sucks, I want to quit. There was a time though when we had some awesome managers at my store, but not anymore, this one closing manager, leaves his shit all over the fucking floor for us to pick up, we're spendng more time doing other people's shit on nght crew, than our own, they want all this extra shit done, and I just can't do it anymore.

I work full-time, even though I asked to be part-time, at slaveway, there is only two of us on NIGHT CREW, and they won't hire anyone else for night crew, and it is a pain in the fucking ass, and when we don't get everythng done, they treat us like shit.. Then management goes off to order FUCKING SHIT LOADS of back-stock for their ends, they take em down, and it becomes ours, goes into the back-room, and they expect us to work it to the shelf, nothn on the ends sell and they pack it out.

My god, I hate Slaveway, even though I was just a lowly "Courtesy Clerk" that did more than 90% of the rest of the employees. (God bless the deli section, they made good food and were nice). You get treated like shit when you do one thing wrong, and you barely get any recognition when you do perfectly.

OMG i know how you feel, they give me day killers all the time, and the person left off the wic checks.
what pisses me off more than ever is the fact that now on a shop if you dont check on the bottom of the cart you get fucked over, about a month ago i got shopped and lost the whole store 3 points and they are still makeing me feel like crap.
