Wow, I'm surprised. This almost sounds better than the DX-7! Of course, I'm sure the DX-7 has more FM capabilities, being that was the name of the game back then -- and remains very popular even today! I'm studying FM synthesis, and in my opinion, it's the most expressive form of electronic sound there is.
Wish I could afford one. Wish I could afford a DX-1! Why not? As long as I'm wishing... Heh :) And throw a CS-80 in while I'm at it. Ah, but that's why we have Arturia. Still, we will always need Katsunori-san. Domo arigato!
PLEASEE CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN GET A DX5 POWER CABLE I REALLY URGENTLY NEED ONE AND IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE MISSING THAT I WOULD NEED I DONT HAVE ANY OF THE WIRES
@backindauk thannk you soo soo much for replying to me..seriously it means a lot. i think its the akai mpc60 but im not sure .. i find these power cables that are similar to the one i need known as kettle cables ..but the difference is... the slots in the kettle cable. there kettle cable normally has 3 slots the one desperately need is has 2 slots (the top hole is missing) and its proving a challenge.. i dont want to have to sell this it was a present from my grandfather .... help?
@emilshere Hey man, basically, a DX5 is two DX7's in one box. The DX5 has 32 note polyphony, and two cartridge slots. They have more specific buttons for editing, too, which helps to limit menu diving. The DX5 also has more keys, 76 instead of 61.
@DX7Alex You forgot to ad the 48 patch performance section which allow the player to save up to 48 performance setups. The only problem is, if you're using more than the basic two cartridges, you have to remember which sound cartridges ere use with which set up.
I loved my DX5, but sold it to buy a Kurzweil PC2X with the orchestra ROM...which is really nice I like the PC2X but there are some sounds that are pure DX.
There have been so many emulations of that electric piano sound in modern keyboards. Only the DX can do that, because you can't sample all the frequency changes on the dynamics.
@Geeljasjes I agree with you. There's some sort of a DX piano on every single sample-playback synthesizer, and yet, it just doesn't capture the magic of the original DX.
i always wondered if most of the DX series are monophonic since i notice that here on the video there is like a reverb effect that makes it into stereophonic???
Wonderfull playing skills, great FM patches: a high quality demo, sir - that goes for the sound quality of the video too. Thank you, and keep up the good work!
I think it's not a problem, because the DX5 consists of two DX7 that can be layered or split on the keyboard. If the patch is layered, you can reproduce it only on DX7 II (but with only the half of polyphony). I have a DX7 II-FD and that patch is called FullTines (no. 5. on the factory ROM card)
A " very pro" way to get that sound is to layering your DX 7 ( first generation to a TX 7 " with the same patch 2 channels of DX at left, 2 channels of TX at right and take a chorus unit add some reverb and you will get that David Foster's Sound
Too sad you do not understand any thing. But I love the sound of the japanese speach, and his wonderfull playing skills.
Zu schade, dass man nichts versteht.
Best Regards from Germany.

I own a DX5. While I rarely use it anymore, I probably played it more than any synth I ever owned. It has such a wonderful FM sound.
Great playing in this vid. Does the synth justice.

@RAZZAMOND10
Depending on the DX5 version you have, it may be interchangeable with a Roland Alpha Juno or Akai MPC60 power cable.
If you need me to get a Yamaha PN#, please send me a message.

FM is beautiful and underrated, it has recieved such an un-deserved amount of bashing due to the cheesy 80's patches.

DX7を持ってますが、当時、冨田勲さんに憧れて、シンセサイザー奏者になろうと思い、高校を中退してDX7を購入しました。
いまは、愛森泉としてシンセサイザー奏者です。

just add it with a MKS 20 from Roland :-)

yes, use the basic piano sound and play with the hamonics, turning there level up or down.. or find a cartridge with it on..
but you can edited it ..

@dreamrecorder
Two ways: TX7 or a Boss CE-3.
Having a TX7 and detuning it has the advantage of layering two different sounds.
The chorus will only detune the sound and make your DX stereo.
