always liked the end of this vid where Hall is blissfully unaware that the song has ended and he's still jammin' on the guitar, then Oates puts his hand over the guitar to shut him up...lol.
@rosopeligroso Yeah. .for example. . . if you are getting a nice, pink tender wet vicelike piece of poozle. . . . don't tell the girl that she is sharp as a bowling ball and annoying as all hell. . . just keep pumping and pumping and pumping!!!
The song pertains that sometimes you dont' have to say anything for people to know what you are thinking, it is implied. You've never heard that phrase? wow!
one of my favorite hall and oates songs.... cant believe i stumbled across it on you tube.... havnt haeard it since I played my BIG BAM BOOM album 15 years ago!!!! LONG live the greatest DUO of all time!!!
@iljason13 Had some very tough competition that spring ... Rhymn of the night, Crazy for you, Don't You (Forget About Me), We are the World, Smooth operator...
Given they had 2 lives their original enception a tight 70s folkish rock then in the 80s coming going to electric, up-tempo version; this ended up my all-time fave by them. The refrain at the end is just fantastic, a whole different sound & direction for them. I'm operating on very little sleep so don't if I'm repeating myself, but H & O are up there with Joe Jackson, Talk Talk & David Bowie for succefully reinventing themselves & not just for the sake of making a buck ala madonna et al.
Hall & Oates really lucked out getting grammy-winning producers Bob Clearmountain and Arthur Baker for "Big Bam Boom"(1984). The album peaked at #5 and sold over three million copies worldwide. With aditional hard-edged videos and intensive touring(and Daryl's leopard-print jacket!), the duo finally achieved pop stardom.
Didn't Hall & Oates back-up players(T-Bone, etc.) end up as studio musicians on Saturday Night Live? Seems like I remember seeing T-Bone(bass) & the guitar player(can't remember his name) on it.
RIP T-Bone ...you're a huge reason why I love Hall and Oates since my childhood....you were always just as important and I know Hall and Oates would agree
@JoeNJ2 ..........and the part at the end when John is tapping Daryl's arm (who is alone on stage), revealing that the whole video was in Daryl's mind.
@CrimsonBaby2007 I finally found the full video from this website. I tried to paste the link to the website but youtube would not let me so just type in "hall and oates video-some things are better left unsaid" and one of the videos shown is from dailymotion so click onto that video which is 5 minutes long. hope this helps everyone out.
@MyRumplestiltskin If you look at the right side of this page where it shows other videos from Hall and Oates, jameshagan75 has p[osted the entire video
@jrshooter17 Yes, went # 18 as the 3rd single; way better than Out of Touch (#1) or Method of Modern Love (#5), and right up there with Possession Obsession (#30).
A song about adultery, or about alcoholism, or drug use, or any of the other secret illicit activities that some of us need to do in order to satisfy our restless spirits.
I'm fascinated by this song.I think the fact that it's "pop" steers us away from the fact that the composition is very complex.I love the way they "drive it." Yum!
I love this song and Hall and Oates. The words ring so very very true. I sometimes think the world would be a better place if some things just were just left unsaid. All of their songs have such deeper meaning.
Truly one of their best songs. The ONLY band I've seen live where EVERY song they played was a chart HIT! More than 20 HITS in concert and there were certainly more they could have played. Darryl Hall's voice is one the very finest; his/their melodies among the most creative AND catchy. Brilliant lyrics much of the time, too!
I like his vocals a lot better on their studio stuff than the stuff I've seen/heard live... and it's not that I don't think he can sing live, I just don't care for what he does with the songs; his interpretations.
I completely agree. I've always been a huge fan of these guys, but Darryl did tend to start going overboard with his vocal gymnastics when performing live. Sometimes less is more. Still, I do love their music.
If I had a voice as beautiful and soulful as Daryl's I think I would indulge in a little 'vocal gymnastics' too. Daryl is a complete legend. I feel sorry for people who have never been introduced to Hall and Oates' music.
I would like a whole album of the part starting at 2:36 (and goes on to the end.) Its like a top 40 pop group suddenly forgot who they were in the middle of a song and started making cool hard rock harmonies instead.. anyway, great song.
I am agreeing with byte19's comments about songs on 'Big Bam Boom' but I have got to include 'All American Girl'. Very catchy and with Daryl's smooth, soulful, beautiful voice over it...total class.
Oh yes, because Daryl's voice is so heavenly. I like this video in spite of it being totally opposite to what I pictured in my head. I like the running water effects.
Yes! also take that Robert Plant!, and for the record check out GE Smith's mullet there! his was 2-tone! this is where the pony tail started for the soon to be axe-slinger leading the SNL band along w T-Bone later in the year!
altho i d even push it back to right around the 2 minute mark
never too bg on h&o but this is definitely one of the coolest songs i ve ever heard
the changeover you pointed out just exceptional it s stayed w/e since the very first time i heard it ... and you re right too about the words -- i guess we learn that as we get older
Great song, video, concept...I was a real sucker for hot rock videos that combined guitar licks w/water images, like this one and Bryan Adams' "Run to You"!
I couldn't agree more!! I really miss the well-written songs of the 80's. I just don't like the stuff out now, it all sounds alike to me. Oh well, somebody likes it I guess.
well said, vembermember! The '80s were the high water mark for pop music, IMO; even the untalented musicians of that time were head and shoulders better than the crap we have today. that's because they really gt involved with them because they felt that the directors perceptions of the songs didn't match theirs so they took charge and John Oates co- directed this one i believe. i would say this has to be one of the best videos ever aired in the history of MTV for its concept and everything!- a Day in the life for the lads basically... the venue is Hampton Coliseum in VA(yes! Hampton Comes Alive!)
Hall & Oates were way ahead of the game when it came to that new art form known as the music video. They were early adopters who saw the potential, though they are kinda cheesy (in a good way) now. Too bad MTV didn't live up to its potential...
yeah also H&O said that theyre videos were comical, cartoon-esque. so that was the intent too. i miss this era of music video. i remember growing up with this stuff and it's sort of disillusioning the way so much has changed. who whoud've thought and why?
