Corneliusthecat, you and everyone else on here has blown it at one time or the other. Not saying Gitomer did or didn't I wasn't there. But if he did, perhaps he would have handled it differently given another opportunity. I for one think this man has a lot of sales wisdom to offer. Just because he doesn't always walk what he talks doesn't disqualify him in my book. You don't always live up to your own standards and neither do I. So what is your point really?
@uohecc Friendliness isn't fake. You can fake friendliness, but it's better to actually be that way. Even if you don't want to, it makes the customer feel better about being at the place of business.
What if your surrounded by negative people that bring you down, and lower your vibration. Im trying hard, but Ive married into a bitter family that does nothing, but brun bridges, and holds grudges, and because of this this family is getting smaller every year.
For me how friendly you need to be is just another variable that changes from client to client. Some customers will like it. Some won't. A good sales person is a schizophrenic with a million different personalities that knows which one is most appropriate to display at any given time.
Serious when i work and friendly when i need to be Nobody will take you serious in the business world if you are friendly. Im there to sell not to be the clients mate( it's business )
Its not about being there mate It's about being "friendly or positive".And if you are friendly you will get further ahead then when you are right now. I promis you portland Oregon USA:)
i understand that but im not there to be his buddy the client must know that im there to do business it works and that is why im the top advertising sales executive for the past 3 years
Sales roles are totally necessary the way our society runs. Its pointless to characterize everyone as "snake oil" or "used car". Treat the salespeople you meet with respect and friendliness, you will be surprised how it affects them since they face so much adversity. If we actually embraced the idea of salespeople as educators, their pay would come down because the job would be so much easier!
I have sold syndicated columns for a major newspaper & I have found that no matter how good of a writer/speaker, people aren't always what they seem. Gitomer is a pro and his information is right on but he's a salesman. His job is to engage you and sell his product. Corneluis is right - you never know who is listening or watching - to be the best snake oil salesman, you have to always be at the top of your game. People always hang on to the negative."The cat" remember nothing but the negative.
was staying at the Renaissance hotel in Vancouver on business when I overheard Gitomer taking a piece out of the desk clerk. He was extremely condescending and obnoxious to the poor lady.
Gitomer, you really need to be careful how you act when you're in the public. I'm sure that's not the kind of image you want to project...especially if you're in sales. The people around you in the lobby could be potential customers..... Sales 101.
I think if you look at some of this material you will find that at no point does he say not to be rude to people, just not to customers.
I mean if you as a customer is being treated like a prat then your more then welcome to blow off steam on them.
I suspect his frustration is from the person not knowing him. The hotels have his name and like to show how good service they can do and get a mention in his book. ;)
That reminds me of a quote from Dave Barry - "A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person".
Your comment is right on the money, but then again so it Gitomer's. When thinking about whether you want to BuyGitomer, you will remember how friendly he was, and it WILL impact your decision-making process. It's sometimes a lot easier to be wise than to exercise wisdom.
@corneliusthecat: How ironic that someone is talking here about how to be friendly and then what you saw in Vancouver...although there are always three sides to every story: his side, the desk clerk's side and the truth.
@corneliusthecat shut the fuck up you little dumb muthafucka. You obviously don't know shit about the business world. Sometimes shit happens bro and people snap when the person on the other end of the scale is a moron. Poor lady? ha fuck that dumb bitch. I'm pretty sure that Jeff wouldn't of snapped at her if she didn't keep fucking around and wasting his time. Its that simple. I too hate stupidity and laziness and don't ever forget this asshole. Berating customers is not being friendly either.
Mr.Gitomer, I totally agree! One can find perfect example from my latest experience at : salescase.blogspot.com/

Actually, I used to work at Nordstrom. Most Mondays it seemed true that most people there were happy to be at work. Go figure.

I cannot imagine any sales professional who doesn't see value in the "ART" of being friendly as enjoying any measure of success.
