Wish the quality was better. :\ Really nice solo. Why do you always disable ratings on your videos? I would imagine that they would get rated rather well. It would bring a greater audience to your videos too.
@Enigma793 Yeah, in most cases you have to. There are just too many trolls out there when the WFD thing is in play, But what I have found is that more views come from keeping the comments sections open. I have another video where the ratings function has always been disabled, and it has well over one million views. Youtube is pretty quirky for sure.
@MSmithjazz Man you are as sharp away from the kit as on it! You nailed that dude! I was close freinds with jazz legend JC Heard. He would be impressed. I can see influence from the greats, and you have taken it all to heart and made it yours. Could you help out an old drummer? I would love to see that left hand of yours up close. I need to work on finger control, and would love to hear what you think.
Thanks for the inspiration, You are quite the talent, and a joy to watch!
@MSmithjazz Man you are as sharp off the kit as on! you nailed him! I was close friends with jazz legend JC Heard. Let me tell you, son, you are good. You don't copy anyone, your style is yours. I can see a lot of influence from the greats, and you have taken that all to heart, and made it yours. Congrats! hey, can you help an old drummer out:? Have any video of that left hand? I would really like to see it working up close to learn! Thanks!
@Cekmore I agree! I'm just trying to shut out the crappy feedback/reverb and the technical is amazing...switchups right on point. Lots of crazy rhythm in rhythms....Nice stuff!!
That kid is absolutely sick...his single snare roll hits are some of the most accurate and concise that I have ever witnessed. I'm not a fan of the Buddy Rich style in appearances, but its clear to me that its one of the most effective overall drum styles for rhythm, speed, and clarity.
@psychox642 Have you watched teh video of Buddy Rich explaining why he doesn't like to use matchgrip? It's really simple to him; you limit yourself by matching grip. There is much more you can do within the measure with traditional grip. Granted more isn't always better, but, why limit yourself? I don't know.....you should check it out. After Buddy explains it he goes on a tear for like 2 minutes. Really the only reason I'm watching this is because of Rogers drums. I own a Holiday kit.
Inferno? Are you joking? Why not ask Inferno himself. He knows Matt Smith and will say without a problem that Matt has the faster hands. mrmasterjoe23 should educate himself first before talking so foolishly.
@mrmasterjoe23 um just for the record matt smith can play over a thousand stokes per minute when inferno can do that then he might be able to talk (but that's him not you)
Honestly, that is probably the fastest and longest Drum solo ever. I don't know how the hell you can do that without letting go of those sticks, but its bloody incredible. That Drumkit must have been proud to be played by you.
very nice, i like how you play the traditional grip really fast. im a beginner and i struggle with my left hand when it comes to play the traditional way.
why does noone realize that playing extremely fast isnt ussually musical. and is only practiced to be well..the fastest, therefore it would not be utuilized in a drum solo. if one were to watch him doing the drummeter video, then one would realize that this man is indeed fast.
@swr112261 Well thats because this is a slower drum solo played by Matt Smith which officialy is the fastest drummer (living). I.E. the fastest drummer does a solo at any given speed and BPM, below and up to his capability. The title of the video would then be "Fastest Drummer Matt Smith performs a solo" and not "drummer Matt Smith does the fastest solo ever". :)
so if your so fast y dont u play metal??? like realy metal is the best way to express speed in druming playing what ever u call this is nothing u can be playing much more teunicaly insted ov randomly just throwing your speed around like yes its fast but your deffenatly no george kollias or any thing
@tom77092 For me, it's mainly just what feels comfortable for you. I've found over the years that traditional grip is much more comfortable than matched. But I'd say just try both grips out and see what's most comfortable to you.
@mroachfan cont' I was Big Band drummer in N.Y mid seventies. Upuntil now I play jazz, swing, country, boogie, Chicago blues and latin & I enjoy it and the audiances in europe here love it. Here's a tip: Speed isn't where it's at. Time, Taste and Technique, simplicity and creative interaction with the band. That's where it's at. Enjoy Thanks for commenting back. take care mate. : )
@tysja4a Gee, did you not know this kid is a very famous jazz musician who plays with some of the top guys on earth or do you talk stupid at home too?. Don't you just love youtube?
I am so happy with the style you went with in your drumming! Most people think speed on the drums is everything, or in other words, most heavy metal drumming... but you're just amazing, this is the best way to go... all in my opinion of course though.
Like all the greats, your talent is just oosing out of you. I really enjoyed this and could listen to you all night. Never boring (unlike Gadd and all his buddies, who I find unlistenable). Superb !! Good job !!
@Kelavmeister I don't hear much Buddy in this, personally. It's more groove oriented than what Buddy used to play and, Matt's incredible pad hand speed notwithstanding, it's not fast around the kit like Buddy's solos were. (I think Matt himself has said that he can't get around the kit as fat as Buddy could -- or at least can't play complex figures around the kit as fast as Buddy did. Who can?)
Anyway, it's an amazing solo, but not a Buddy solo. It's Matt's own thing, which is great
@richcapo By my statement "Buddy-y" I meant that he is doing a LOT of the one handed roll, push-pull deal which was made most famous by Buddy. And it is hard to say that this isn't at least somewhat influenced by Buddy because the majority modern-jazz drummers are. Yes, it's groove oriented, and of COURSE it's nothing like Buddy; but his left hand is a lot like Buddy.. Maybe I should have been more specific?
@Kelavmeister Cool. I definitely see where you're coming from. The overall feel of the performance, though, is more like Louis Bellson, I think. As for the one handed rolls, and this is a minor detail, I don't think they're as fast as Buddy's nor as powerful and versatile. Buddy was famous for playing loud OHRs with a ton of dynamics plus the ability to switch up their note values -- alternate between 16ths and 8ths, for instance, where as Matt is using mostly 16ths. Still awesome, though.
@richcapo Again, I was just pointing out a small aspect of his performance that reminded ME of Buddy. AGAIN, of course it's not as fast or as intricate as Buddy; nonetheless still there. And little nuances like at 1:56 are obviously homages to Buddy. Those are present throughout. I am NOT saying this piece as a whole, but few small things.
@richcapo Haha, alright Mr. Cool... I am not as excited as I am really just trying to get my point across because thus far you have blatantly rejected all of my observations. My last message was trying to emphasize my points using evidence within the context of this video. But whatever I say you seem to think otherwise, since you are obviously more knowledgeable than I am. So I'm more or less just frustrated; rightly so I think too.
Nope...I teach drums and I have yet to meet anyone who can pay this fast. Not a 5 year old...not a year...or any other age. Feel will come in time. I would like to see a little more clearly how you're gripping and throwing the sticks tough...
nobody wants your cd or video's or songs your a little 18 year old who has not experienced anything every note in this video is a waste of your life it means nothing drumming is a art, there is no emotion in your playing only speed which a 5 or 6 year old could do
I've been drumming for 40 years, so yes, I am a pro. Nobody wants to challenge me, trust me. It would be stupid and you would feel like an idiot when it was over with.
This kid is good. Period. The way he sets his kit up and the angles he takes is irrelevant. Everybody approaches drums differently. I would like to hear a better produced drum solo by Matt. Otherwise you dopes that are beating him up in here should realize the importance of rudiments. He does, obviously. Go Matt!
@tmont007 YOU SHOULD B A DRUMMER FOR A BIG BAND THEN IF UR A PRO. AND IM NOT QUESTIONING U BUT JUST SAYIN WHY RNT U PLAYIN FOR THE BIG GUYS, UNLESS U ALREADY R! :)
Bear in mind also, that at his age he probably hasn't had a bunch of friends/family die, heartbreak, incredible experiences, and horrible experiences to be able to pour into those drums just yet.
He's sure pouring what he DOES have into them though, and really it's enough.

very good stick control. can't wait to see what your doing in a few years. excellent player. i like how you ride the snare with your left and solo over it with the right around the kit. hmmmm where have i seen that before? wink

Clean playing bro! I love how your left hand is on "auto-pilot" at the beginning of the solo!

hmmm, youtube trolls say guys like this:
1. Aren't really so fast.
2. Can't transfer their speed to a kit.
3. Can't play with musicality.
Oops I guess the trolls missed this one. This video shoots all that out of the water. A phenomenal effort.
