they arte all !! inspiration and motivation and everything good !! Nothing compares to them !!!! the best music.....but not only this !!! they are legends and our references forever !!!!
I'll have whatever they're on please! Love this song...it strikes me how close they are to the Beatles...I think this is as close in terms of songwriting and vocal harmony, in this genre, that we ever got in America...just a gorgeous song...and they are wasted....I saw David Crosby once live in Boston at the Paradise...almost live...they carried him out to the stage and he just couldn't do it...he was on his very last brain cell....thank God he got clean...all four of them should get together...
I was only born in the early 90's still my father used to listen to this song all the time when I was still very young. Time erased or conceiled those memories from me, life had its hard changes and for many years never did I hear this song again. Some time ago I found all those old vynils he used to play and I can't discribe what I felt when I heard this song after so many years...suddenly it all came back, all those memories all those small precious moments...and my father.
For those of us who grew up in this era, this is a time capsule of wonderful memories. Oh to be able to go back to times like those - a time when people weren't so shallow and stood for something. Where are the demonstrations against the government now - against the piggish spending oin foreign countries whil we have people in poverty here. Come on. the 60's and 70's meant something....lets make it happen again.
Where's the time machine, I want to go back to a simplier time.Free as an eagle, stone cold in love, sneaking a quickie in my T.A.'s office. The music, the friends, the city, the women, the love, RIP glorious memories RIP
it's because of xfactor we'll never get anything like this again! two men two guitars sounding like a symphony orchestra, now an artist can reproduce this sound with electronic toys that are destroying live music. as we once knew it!
@brucebut1 " electronic toys " aka the sausageshape amplitude(Rs) did wonders for a whole generation before.RHCP,U2 & every generic solo artist like Madonna,Gaga,MJ,Bieber and most likely many hundredthousands more.
Do not blame xfactor blame the "motown-(over)producer-virus-of the sausageshape dynamics strain " and data compression(mp3) of the rare songs that did not need sausageshape dynamics to remove the last tiny bit of musical spirit among the mass.
Crosby lost his girlfriend Christine Hinton, said to be the love of his life, to a fatal car accident in 1969. Guinevere, according to Crosby, was one of the girls he wrote this song about. Although I believe this song was written prior to her death, CSN&Y were still finishing up the album when she died. The lyric verse at 3.05s could be written for Christine and it appears that his emotions are bleeding thru his eyes while signing that part. He was on his boat in the Harbor when she died. SAD
@TNT73BLF Very fleeting but I see what you mean, there does look like he can see her behind his eye's. I usually balk when I hear this expression but .... thanks for sharing that..
This is arguably my favorite song Crosby ever wrote. It's just so beautiful and the images his lyrics spark are fantastic. The man did A LOT of drugs, but his genius remained,...and remains, in tact. I'll take Crosby over the other guys, even though they are brilliant too. His songs have this "thing" about them that I can't put into words.
When he eats his pick, do you think he ate some acid too? Just so he could say he ate acid on camera? Does that sound like something David would do? I dunno it struck me as strange. Yea/nay?
most of csn live versions compromise the original pretty bad, in terms of lyrical phrasing and the instrumentation, so for each one i listen with a pinch of apprehension. But on this... absolute perfection, no compromise, haunting.
The most talented group of pop musicians ever assembled, three and sometimes four musicians who had been professionally successful but were able to submerge their own egos to make something better.
They were so cute back then. This group had something for every woman, a blonde, a brunette and a blue black haired Brit. I just love blonds what can I say?
My statement wasn't intended to diminish the brilliance of Stephen's songwriting, guitar playing, or vocal abilities. I feel that David's voice had the most presence, tone, resonance, and harmonic purity.
The way they employ and dance around the limits of their range is such an usually interesting thing to do. The tension and poignant harmonies are absolutely breath-taking and mind-blowing. All in all, an ear-gasm.
@divinedgar Thanks for the pointer Edgar.. I think they do sound the same.. Kinda.. Very Nash-ish.. And the harmonies are very nice! I must check out more of the Fleet Foxes. Thanks
@CRAIGARRR I'm tired of this hippy nostalgia discrediting my generation. I LOVE CSN &Y but step back a minute. Your so busy listening to what has been that you are missing out on what is happening now.

Intimate smaller performances like the one here can sound much more interesting than the "huge arena rock" cliches which dominate nowadays music(in general).
The perception of(Folk; Blues) rock music has changed so much and not for the better(bigger sales and bigger audiences seem to be somekind of a modern new age niche, which determines the quality of the band).
i FEEL Joni Mitchel as being the guiding spirit to CSN and oh yes, her fellow Cadandian Young. Thankyou for this, this is one of my fav CSN tunes, just love it..the guitars are divine +,beautiful harmonies...Graham Nash is a good old Wythenshaw (south Manchester )lad..an old friend of mine sat next to him in school,.great guy ..cheers S x
I remember being amazed when Graham joined The Hollies and moved them in a different direction. And he seemed to do it so easily. Poppy to hippy all in one go.
saw these guys at Glastonbury last year, had never really listened to them before to be honest but I was absolutely blown away, it was a special vibe, especially this song and David Crosby's voice. They played a cover of Ruby Tuesday which reduced most of the audience to tears.
Why did anyone want to have a discussion about David Crosby versus Bob Dylan. They aren't enemies or rivals, really. Maybe it's somehow unfair that the genius has no singing voice and Crosby has the best but Dylan has enough going for him that I doubt he worries about it. And Crosby has come back from the depths several times.
Dylan had written John Wesley Harding two years BEFORE this foolery: my god, here are these Hollywood Male Whores, Proudly sitting up in a BBC TV Studio, in front of a live audience & revealing to us "she had golden hair, like yours, lady like yours." in perfect 2-part harmony. Every wonder why Crosby ended up snorting up every $ of his royalties & fees & then came beggin' UCLA to find him a liver transplant? HE HAD NOTHING 2 SAY! & STILL DOESN'T = Crosby's AN AIR HEAD. THIS PROVES IT.~ttt~
@tomthumbtoo Dylan did some nice things lyrically, but when it came to melodic music and vocalizing, he was never fit to grovel at the feet of anyone in CSNY, let alone Crosby. You seem a very angry (and nearly incoherent) man, which gives one pause for concern, especially at your advanced age. Relax .......
@vampyros1 you got a Good Point. Too much coffee that nite, maybe. Still, you gotta admit --- even though there is room for Us All, of whatever breed --- Dylan went on & created a Legacy for us all to admire [esp. the Rolling Thunder Review & his -- forgotten? --- Gospel period +Things Have Changed period, much later; even to act in films ] While Crosby descended into cocaine abuse & self-love bullshit, that is reflected perfectly in this fluff he is singing here. He Got Nothing, Man. ~ttt~
@tomthumbtoo You are a bitter man. What has their substance abuse got to do with their music? I love Dylan too but they're just different, why the need to compare?
@murrayw Their MUSIC? I certainly hope you don't mean JUST Crosby's clever harmonies in front of a microphone: You DO mean, the SONGS he wrote, I assume. uh, What does a song that a human being writes & performs on stage, have to do with the way the writer Lives his LIFE? uh, are YOU REALLY asking this stupid a question? Joni Mitchell said it best: "Songs are like tattoos. . ." so you might reflect on that. ~ttt~
@tomthumbtoo WOW you really are a patronising pompous man who obviously has a problem with David Crosby receiving a liver transplant. I don't doubt that personal experiences hugely effect an artist's output but what an artist does in his personal life just doesn't interest me, only their music.
What a great time this was, hanging around the Kings Road on a Saturday. the smell of Patchouli, having my "long" hair cut in Sissors, looking at clothes, and making plans for the evening. A beautiful time, I thought I would be young forever.
@skinnyskaller. I have seen him do this before, and David did it during Judy Blue Eyes at Woodstock while Stills played...just muting the strings and hitting on them to keep the beat. Funny lookin, huh?
I was in high school when CSN came out with their first album which was seminal in my cultural development in all ways. This incredible song still moves and inspires my art-- along with their other greats. This one is one of their best songs and Nash's and Crosby's high musicianship, artistry and alchemic folkroots came to a perfect brew in this performance.
Another thing about Crosby (other than his unbelieveable ability to find lower harmonies) that seems to be rarely mentioned is his guitar chording. It's not like he's covering someone elses songs - these are chords/songs he's assembled, along with S, N & Y, to make such incredible music i.e. Lee Shore, Triad.... Amazing - some of the best ever. Some really haunting and beautiful chord progressions.
This, Traction in the Rain, Lee Shore, Elton's Come Down in Time, I know there must be so much more I've missed. Please email to me any others you would suggest that convey this flavor of peace, calm and introspective pause.
I can almost smell the Cedars.
If only I would have been born 10 years earlier...
Amazing what a clear voice David has. I love all of their voices, Stills has great tone too, Nash of course is the penultimate high-end harminizer, but Davids has such a clear insistent tone.. really remarkable.
David Crosby ... with all his jazzy-broken chord-mystical vision. For years I thought him a second tier part of CSNY, boy was I WRONG. What a voice.........what a writer. Fine player too- TOP SHELF
@vampyros1 Agree with you: Crosby had the premier voice among the vocally talented CSNY. He did not write as much as Young did perhaps, but most of it,
like this number, was first rate. "Guinevere" was new here; written for his recently deceased bride to be, Christine Hinton. Intensely romantic without one drop of kitsch.
But seriously, how good is David's voice here?!

Maybe it's somehow unfair that the genius has no singing voice and Crosby has the best but Dylan has enough going for him that I doubt he worries about it. And Crosby has come back from the depths several times.

This music is mystical and spellbinding and gorgeous. It reminds me of my ex-gf. :-(

THIS PROVES IT.~ttt~
tomthumbtoo 1 year ago
@tomthumbtoo Dylan did some nice things lyrically, but when it came to melodic music and vocalizing, he was never fit to grovel at the feet of anyone in CSNY, let alone Crosby. You seem a very angry (and nearly incoherent) man, which gives one pause for concern, especially at your advanced age. Relax .......
vampyros1 1 year ago
@vampyros1 you got a Good Point. Too much coffee that nite, maybe. Still, you gotta admit --- even though there is room for Us All, of whatever breed --- Dylan went on & created a Legacy for us all to admire [esp. the Rolling Thunder Review & his -- forgotten? --- Gospel period +Things Have Changed period, much later; even to act in films ] While Crosby descended into cocaine abuse & self-love bullshit, that is reflected perfectly in this fluff he is singing here. He Got Nothing, Man. ~ttt~

@SaxyDan54 & Crosby is filled with a dead-man's liver. ~ttt~

@tomthumbtoo You are a bitter man. What has their substance abuse got to do with their music? I love Dylan too but they're just different, why the need to compare?
murrayw 1 year ago
@murrayw Their MUSIC? I certainly hope you don't mean JUST Crosby's clever harmonies in front of a microphone: You DO mean, the SONGS he wrote, I assume. uh, What does a song that a human being writes & performs on stage, have to do with the way the writer Lives his LIFE? uh, are YOU REALLY asking this stupid a question? Joni Mitchell said it best: "Songs are like tattoos. . ." so you might reflect on that. ~ttt~
tomthumbtoo 1 year ago
@tomthumbtoo WOW you really are a patronising pompous man who obviously has a problem with David Crosby receiving a liver transplant. I don't doubt that personal experiences hugely effect an artist's output but what an artist does in his personal life just doesn't interest me, only their music.

maybe so, but you are still full of shit.

What a great time this was, hanging around the Kings Road on a Saturday. the smell of Patchouli, having my "long" hair cut in Sissors, looking at clothes, and making plans for the evening. A beautiful time, I thought I would be young forever.
This music brings it all back.

Incredible guitar work from Nash on this one!
KarmaGermany 1 year ago
is he even playing? i mean like a simple rythm piece? or is he holding the guitar just because he doenst want to feel naked :p
skinnyskaller 1 year ago
@skinnyskaller Pay attention: Crosby wrote this piece. Watch the hands, not the spaced out smile. Nash is playing accoustic backup.
bookkeeper57 1 year ago

Crosby at his peak. I've watched this sooo many times. Never gets old.

This, Traction in the Rain, Lee Shore, Elton's Come Down in Time, I know there must be so much more I've missed. Please email to me any others you would suggest that convey this flavor of peace, calm and introspective pause.

Amazing what a clear voice David has. I love all of their voices, Stills has great tone too, Nash of course is the penultimate high-end harminizer, but Davids has such a clear insistent tone.. really remarkable.

@ryryeinhardt ? Hostility and anger is not the answer. especially toward a duo as great as simon and garfunkel......
on another note. great performence of a great song by great people. We love you david. Live on. Rock on.

David Crosby ... with all his jazzy-broken chord-mystical vision. For years I thought him a second tier part of CSNY, boy was I WRONG. What a voice.........what a writer. Fine player too- TOP SHELF
vampyros1 2 years ago 60
@vampyros1 Agree with you: Crosby had the premier voice among the vocally talented CSNY. He did not write as much as Young did perhaps, but most of it,
like this number, was first rate. "Guinevere" was new here; written for his recently deceased bride to be, Christine Hinton. Intensely romantic without one drop of kitsch.
