@RedGemAlchemist , to my mind, the Doctor can only be portrayed so well by someone who's JUST acting. In the case of Tom Baker, you watch interviews and stuff with him outside the show and he's still a frickin' crazy manic guy. You can't really tell where Tom Baker ends and the Doctor begins, and that really helped I think. Matt's sorta the same way, you can see he's this awkward oddball guy in real life and it carries over so well. Tennant was great, but Smith is nearing Baker's level.

In this particular episode, I'd totally agree. In general, though, David Tennant has the advantage: unlike Matt Smith, he's capable of turning in a fantastic performance even when the script is weak. Matt Smith, though wonderful, often seems confused and lost as an actor when the scripts aren't as well-written. But The Lodger is one of the best-written eps he's had, so he's lovely here! :)
