ARCA wrecks havent really changed over the years. They're always bad. And always involve a huge amount of cars. Just the inexperience of the drivers usually.
I don't think this was 87. Cale Yarborough ran a #29 Oldsmobile in 1987. He drove #28 Ford in 1986. The Hardees car involved was a #28 Ford. So this must be from 1986.
It is indeed from '87. It probably doesn't take much to make a number change,I've seen ARCA teams change numbers with duct tape or some creative cutting of decals.
I also have the '86 ARCA race from Talladega on tape, Adcox won that race as well with Davey Allison and Lee Raymond in a photo finish for 2nd place.
Tracy Read, the driver in the white suit that was waving. Was a crew member for Cale Yarborough's Winston Cup team. tragically, he was killed in 2 car crash the next time the ARCA series ran at Talladega when he hit the inside wall.
The date listed in the title screen is incorrect. I have the results to both '87 ARCA races from Talladega, this was definitely in the May race. Read drove a different car in July.
Yes, it was. It was the day before the Winston 500. During the red flag for Allison's crash, they showed highlights from this race, including this crash, Billy Simmons' flip and the pit fire (referred to by Bob Jenkins as a "Holocaust in the pits.")that is referenced during the crash. This race was taped and aired on ESPN on May 23, 1987, 3 weeks after it was run.
Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa.....Holocaust in the pits??? wth? Did anyone die?? If no one died it was not a Holocaust lol. I think the announcer over reacted a bit lol
No, no one died. One or two people got burned pretty bad, though. You're right about the fact that it was an overreaction on Jenkins' part. But, it was a pretty bad fire.
in the smoke you can almost see a car flying up the track in the air

If you look closely, you can see that the Hardee's car in this wreck is actually an Oldsmobile.

Was this during the same weekend as the "catch fence" incident involving Bobby Allison?
IllinoisHighwayMan 4 years ago
may or may not have been the same weekend, but it was the same year.
jrfan07 4 years ago
I think it was the same weekend because that was on ESPN and this was too.

umm use a dictionary Holocaust massive confligration or fire.
RidgeRunner57k 2 years ago
Technically, the definition of a holocaust is "great destruction, especially by fire. So no, the announcer didn't overreact.
Nascarboy426 2 years ago
@IllinoisHighwayMan No, Bobby Allison's crash happened in the spring race, the ARCA race was the same weekend as the July race in 1987.
