They had solos in their early 90s and late 80s albums and though they aren't in the level of Joe Satriani or Buckethead - they still sounded well with their Chuck Berry influenced solos.

He doesn't exactly shred on guitar either, he's a sub-par player who can sing at the same time, which is a pretty normal skill. Check out Billy Corgan for a musician who can "shred" and actually sing well. The one thing that Armstrong impresses me with is his activism, and even with that he is still a total joke of a musician.

Singing doesn't always matter. And judging by how successful the band has become and how they were even able to have a big fanbase during their underground years shows how they got through. His voice was slightly better in their early 1980s to early 90s album.
