Do they speak english, if not you check to see if they have a visa because it is a requirement of naturalization that an immigrant learn the language. Yes, but during a lawful stop, they can check a legal citizen such as myself for ID. It has been that way for quite some time. So, if they already have the authority to ask a citizen for ID, why can't they check a non citizen?

People's beef with the AZ's SB1070 does not have to do with asking for ID. The thing is, not all stops require showing ID. Plus the way the SB1070 reads, the suspicion of legal status may prompt status check but not for when they don't suspect. It's this unbalanced way of administering the law that people don't like.

first of all, a perm resident or person with a visa has to show ID anytime a cop asks anyway. That hasn't changed, it has always been like that.

It won't harm hispanics native born here. Most of them don't walk in groups in remote areas, pile into a car with 10+people, mostly adults. They almost always speak fluent English.

That's not the case. It doesn't only affect aliens. The police could stop anyone legal or illegal alike. And if you don't have your "papers"...oh by the way do you always carry your birth certificate on you all the time? Do you carry your passport (if you have one) on you all the time?
