The scary thing is.... this is actually what society is becoming. We're all being watched / tracked / scanned whatever you want to call it we're all being fucked.
@joejohanssen Because the blue flowers were the whole point of employing him as a NARC. He wasn't supposed to bust Donna or her dealer he was supposed to find the source of the blue flowers which are used to make substance D. And at the end of the movie he does find the source of the blue flowers.
@joejohanssen I think that they knew that his mission was actually to infiltrate the drug facility and therefore if they had that level of clearance they also knew that Donna was a cop and were urging him to bring the blue flowers to the police.
@Vultrus The entire organisation know that Fred / Bob are the same person, they've basically picked him as a person to burn out on Substance D to the point that they can get him into a rehab programme. There's a few blue flowers references throughout the film, e.g. Donna mentions them at one point when they're high together. They're trying to constantly plant the idea in his subconscious and hope that when he gets into rehab that no matter how fried his mind is he will recall their importance.
OMG....1:07 when he leaves the room the black dude and and the white guy transform into the white girl and white guy i literally watched that scene like 3 times before i even realized that i wasn't even paying attention
great film, but reading the book first really helped me with it, I know I would've found it hard to grasp otherwise.
For instance: the first scene is underneath incredibly sad, we know as well as Arctor that something terrible is going on in his hemispheres.
I found the St. Paul references in the book quite hard to get. The reflection in the mirror, alternate reality stuff. Maybe I do, but I just don't know it. When he's on a roll, Philip K Dick is da man.

an amazing film and a great scene. The character of Bob Arctor is just so brilliant for a number of reasons; but most of all his pitiable confusion, and his genuine belief that he is carrying out justice in subjecting himself to the scanners, to this life that he so clearly hates. It's so sad to see his slow demise, brought on without his knowledge or consent. The self-awareness is all too brief, but so haunting.
"I can no longer see clearly into myself - I see only murk"
I don't think Keanu is a good actor. But here he's perfect as a burnt-out stoner, because the way he delivers dialogue in every movie is that of a burnt-out stoner.
This is my favorite scene in one of the most original movies ever made. I love the way the scene transitions. It's equally impressive in the book. Some people don't like Keanu Reeves, but he is perfect for this part.
I was familiar with Philip K. Dick's fiction before seeing this movie, but I was still blown away when I first saw this. I immediately bought a second ticket to watch it again. It made me want to explore PKD in even greater depth.
This is the most heart wretching beautiful monologue I've ever read in the book or seen acted. This is perfect, and it fills me with a euphoria. If people wtach this properly, they will feel the same.
"Pretend they aren't here" The scanners? He means the cops that watch everything?
This really gives the sense of paranoia like you were really living in the movie. It feels like today just worse and slightly futuristic. People go to work. people have families and other people are stoners good or bad living in a world where everyone is a narc , the cops are spieing on everyone and the country itself is no longer identifiable from its original intention..
Whatever it is that's watching It's not human It doesn't ever blink. What does a scanner see? Into the head? Down into the heart? Does it see into me? Into us? clearly or darkly? I hope it sees clearly cause I can no longer see into myself. I see only murk. I hope for everyone's sake the scanners do better. Cause if the scanners sees only darkly like I do, then I'm cursed, and cursed again. I will only wind up dead this way, knowing very little, and getting that little fragment wrong too
@Beatnuk what's the point of quoting almost entire of his speech ? and what's the point of giving thumbs up for long quotation? this isn't comment, this is quote ;/
I felt like writing it to get a feel of the poetry, no point beyond that. How I've gotten so many thumbs up, I don't know. The Lord works in mysterious ways.
Kafka's little story "Conversation with the Supplicant" captures this kaliedo-sense a century sooner.
K. Dick and Joseph K. were roto-blood brothers.

@Vultrus but did they not know who that girl was? Why would they tell him to give blue flowers to donna?
