  • mx22, I agree. I find it hard to believe that Parnia, who I believe has written books and who I think is of the opinion that conciousness is seperate of the brain, would come before the world in a sense and announce this huge study if nothing positive happened in the pilot, but maybe I am wrong, did he have to go through the whole study even with a pilot with no positive results? any one know?

  • Without positive results during the pilot, there wouldn't be any problem to study during a large scale study. I don't want to say that NED is true, but a large scale study is only justified if you already have something in your hands.

  • Essishunbe...if your money is on oblivion and haven't seen enough to sway you then you haven't studied things as deep as you think you have...NDEs are only part of the evidence...the evidence is the size of a mountain range...and by the way, if you WANT to believe, that's good. You WILL believe the second it happens to you...it happened to me. You'll realize you are not in the body and still able to turn, think and function. You WILL believe. Respectfully, a FORMER non-believer (that's me)

  • I WANT to believe. I truly do. But I'm with IcyGrooves my money is on oblivion.

If oblivion is true then it means everything is pointless.

Those who have seriously taken oblivion into consideration and all its implications will undoubtedly hope that consciousness is nonlocal and survives death.

I study this stuff relentlessly so I can be proved wrong. So far there isn't enough evidence to sway me.

I hope that they figure all this out in my lifetime.

  • how long it takes, plz give us the first results!

  • Like he said, a positive result from this experiment will revolutionize science. So a high standard of evidence will be required. How can you rule out the possibility that someone who knew what the images were had divulged it to the subject just prior to the interview? I think skeptics presented with a positive result would point to this weak point in the methodology and say that it was inconclusive.

  • the skeptics will find a way to dimiss any positive results... regardless of the evidence. however, it will start the ball rolling and will set us down a new path of science. i have seen other Dr sam parnia interviews and have read his books and he leans towards believing in something else beyond death, so when he says the study is producing the kind of results they would be expecting then he could be referring to his expectations which could be that these people are having ' real' experiences

  • I really doubt it will show that consciousness exists outside the body. It would be great if it did - it would really make my day. But this world is just too mechanistic for that. THere's no ghost in the machine - just the machine. There's nothing new under the sun.

  • A reflection of your belief system, but not reality itself.

  • Perhaps. I would love to be proved wrong. I don't think either of us know for sure what reality is.Quantum mechanics is an interesting field. What I've read so far suggests that it might leave the door open for a connection between consciousness and physical causality. But life after death - thats a bit of a long shot.

I would put money on oblivion - if I was around to collect it :)

  • I would put my money on "I dont know" since that is a logical answer. Besides, this is not the only way to study whether mind exists out of body, or projects outside of the body. Their have been telepathy, remote viewing studies ,etc. The anecdotal near death stories are very interesting, if people accurately describe what is going on in the OR, then the dying brain model falls flat. However, positive results will not change skeptics mind but so what!! they are not the gaurdians of truth

  • Excatly.

Skeptics will always find a way to dismiss results of a studie like this. As long as it don't support their own belief system, they will do anything in their power to disprove it or at least ridicule enough, so that other skeptic's will follow them. And unfortunately, some people will take everything a skeptic says as valid.

Look at this site, to learn the secret of some famous skeptic's:

    skepticalinvestigations . org / New / index . html

  • I've been to that website, I like it very much. Also, try googling Michael Persinger (God Helmet man) and Ingo Swan. Apparently he did a study on Swan and some psychic were the results were significantly greater than chance, yet we dont here him mention that. Skeptics/materialists earn a living in what they do so telepathy, remote viewing can do lots of damage to their work. Hell, the CIA spent millions on remote viewing yet skeptics still dont buy it, because its against their BELIEF system

  • What??? Persinger's research suggests the exact opposite. With his "God" helmet (the use of the term god is facetious, btw), Persinger reproduced almost every aspect of phenomena reported by mystics, drug users, saints, near death experiencers, ober's, etc., simply by stimulating the temporal lobes. You either misunderstood what you read or mixed up a bunch of data. Swann was never studied by Persinger. Swann is a well known nutter from the 70s. Even parapsychologists think he's crackers.

  • just because you can reproduce a NDE doesnt mean they arent real subjective phenomenon

i dont think their are caused by drugs , hallucinations and things like that

  • Lul WAT?

Show me one example of the God helmet reproducing "almost every aspect" of an NDE ;D

  • I stand corrected. Since I've written this post, and done some further reading about Persinger and his research, I realize that certain elements of the NDE were not simulated with the "god helmet". In fact, Persinger, who's an admitted atheist, claims that he has detected evidence of verifiable ESP during his experiments!? That said, the helmet can produce many of the experiences reported by NDE experiencers, drug users, mystic, etc. I'm completely open to both sides of this issue.

  • Allright. I appreciate the openness of your mind :)

    Peace

  • You're unbelievably misinformed. Send me a PM, if you want some actual references that will help clear up your confusion and poor memory. I'm agnostic about much of this data, so I'm aware of both sides of the argument. You, however, have no clue what you're talking about. You've confused names, experiments, research implications, etc. No wonder you believe everything. You've got a selective memory and only recall that which supports your prior beliefs.

  • Is their any way I can become part of this study? maybe stop my heart or something?

    Thanks

  • three years or more.... 2012...isnt there people who believe there will be some kind of spritual awakening then? could this all be related.....? coincidence or not?

  • Vid. 3, referring to the hidden images NDErs should see if elevated looking at their body, P says:"I think its very unlikely that people will see these images, because it should not be happening. . Vid. 4, referring to pilot study, P says: I can report that people have had NDEs within this group. I can say that the pilot phase was successful, and we're getting the sort of data that we'd expect to be getting." Isnt he saying that no one in the pilot study saw the hidden images?

  • He's reaffirming the perspective of mainstream medicine, putting context to just how much this study will shake our understanding of the nature of consciousness to the core.

The pilot study is in fact providing positive results, with a number of resuscitated patients reporting accurate information that would be impossible to obtain unless the nature of the consciousness is non-local.

  • Do you know when the first results of the AWARE study will be mentioned? I thought he did an interview last month saying they are getting a better understanding of why people have NDE's and the descriptions they give during that state...

  • Where did you see the interview? I am also waiting for some results...

  • How do you know the pilot is "providing positive results"?

  • @anewpersonalparadigm just out of curiosity howd did you get early info and what is being found? Thanks!

  • @anewpersonalparadigm You mentioned that Dr. Parnia's Aware study provided positive results. Do you have any updates on the study? Are you involved with the study? This is all fascinating and I'm anxious to hear more. Thank you.

  • This would be incredible. Would change everything entirely. Itll change everything. That would be great.

  • It really would be. People have these experiences all the time, and to have a collection of physicians literally monitoring this situation will yield some very interesting results, in the eyes of empirical science.
