  • Those 60's movies looked amazing! They end with facial mapping :) Get the DVD of Hancock to see how it's really done!

  • absolutely beautiful

  • Name of the Song?

  • this video rulez! really, it does!

  • what's the movie in 4:15 ???

  • 2:58 WTHeck happened with the corner of the table?

  • Nice jump from 1993 - 2004. Should have added Forest Gump, Independence Day, The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings.

  • Ah no mention of the 1927 classic Metropolis, aside from that a great video. Love the soundtrack too.

  • EPIC VIDEO

  • I think Toy Story should have had a clip being that it was the first film to be made with nothing but CGI

  • This took a large measurement of understanding to make. Best regards.

  • If the loving seekers wish to live within the precincts of the Attracting One (Majdhúb), no soul may dwell on this Kingly Throne save the beauty of love. This realm is not to be pictured in words. ~Baha'u'llah

  • great music. sounds like BLUE MAN's masterpiece.

  • Space oddyssey, Alien 1979, and matrix........

  • "not at any time, Only when it was FUNNY!"

  • extra

  • DRUNK TANK

  • clip two???

  • Great video man.

  • whats the song

  • If your doing a chronology of visual effects you can't show star wars and then show the upgraded versions from the late ninties in the same breath as the old ones because that effects technology didn't come out til later. I love this montage but that's kind oof cheap.

  • The content of this video is a farce and a travesty.

    Here's a pretty good list:

    newyork (dot) timeout (dot) com/print/1747925

  • Where Transformes ? :D

  • 2001

  • Y U NO SHOW HARRY POTTER OR LORD OF THE RINGS?

  • You forgot the matrix...that movie forever changed action 360 effects and warped slow motion

  • SirPotasio

  • perfect job for humanity

  • That was great. Thank you!

  • Gollum is missing....

  • Hey I make Special Effect Videos Also check them out!!!

  • That was brilliant =D

  • @MP312C

Nah there was one good scene that's it.

  • They forgot MATRIX!!!

  • EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • FANTASTICALLY DONE!

  • What about Matrix?

  • surely should have ended with avatar.

  • @hujnbds if it was released at the time of course

  • The Empire Strikes Back should have been there

  • Jurassic Park was the shiez back then.

  • @Olzme still better than most stuff today

  • the song sounds like something from the blue man group

  • @axxo798 It actually is the Blue Man Group :-)

  • @axxo798 it is from them -gigglz- heres a cookie -hands u a cookie-

  • spiderman is gay

  • Sorry but the spiderman scene is not cool at all, entirely CGI. the others are great because they incorporate real people/places with CGI

  • Some of those old time movies have effects that by todays standards are'nt all that bad!

  • The music ruined it.

  • Needs lord of the rings.

  • WHERE THE HELL IS BULLET TIME GODDAMNIT!!!!

  • @crazychef247 bullet time was just a bunch of cameras surrounding the characters, not really a particularly ground-breaking use of technology

  • @MP312C That movie was garbage in meaning, but awesome in effects. If it had an effect on your society in general...oy. It wasn't THAT great a film in terms of story, to be honest, and is constantly overrated as "one of the greatest films." I don't care Kubrick directed it--the story was absolutely stupid, and I'm a lover of outstanding writing. I could have been more intelligent. But it was influential in terms of cinematic experience and a pinnacle of visual effects. But still overrated.

  • Where is Transformers :D Avatar? (oh the video is from 2009)

  • @BasshuterZ What did either of those movies do that was a particularly new or not-before-seen way of using technology?

  • Yes. Left out 2001 - a landmark for camera trickery. Also left out The Matrix - which pretty much changed the game for the use of slow-mo and has influenced countless action movies since. But they got Star Wars in there thank god - it's the most obvious leap ahead in movie tech since moving from silent film to sound.

  • what effects were used in The Great Train Robbery? i didnt really see anything

  • You used the lame remastered Death Star explosion and not the original? Don't play into George Lucas' greedy hands, he is just out to sexually assault your wallet!

  • what is that music name ?

  • What is the name of the movie 2:16 and forward? i remember watching it in my childhood. Long time ago :D. Please help me

  • @flerKprod the cartoon and live action one? it's called "who framed roger rabbit"

  • Sounds like a Blue Man Group song.

  • THERES A FEW MOVIES THAT I CAN THINK OF THAT ARE LEFT OUT BUT STILL... I GOT TO SAY, YOU PUT A LOT OF EFFORT INTO THIS VIDEO JUST FROM THE NUMBER OF CLIPS ALONE. GREAT WORK -

  • garageband loops kill the video imo

  • Mhh, you forgot one of the most important one "Metropolis". I think Gollum belongs in this video as well. However, great compilation non the less.

  • I really missed Odysee 2001 and Bladerunner. But still, really great video!

  • Remember when abyss looked cool? Since the Source engines update to Portal2&L4D2 its rendered in realtime.

  • Wow! Realy inspirational

  • IMPRESSIVE! :))

  • Great vid, thanks!

  • "Lose this guy" segment.... HOLY SHIT.... done in 92' !!!!!!!! what the hell kind of software was around to do that in 1992?!

    No kidding 330 hours +

  • 1:07 I'm making this one right now, only the smoke will shapeshift into that object. :D

  • zaprawdę powiadam wam kochajmy grafików :)

  • 3:14 - running with the dinosaurs was the best scene of the century!

  • wtf?! I didnt know that they photoshoped real person in movies... and added all kinds of shit to face...

  • the evolution of visual effects....

  • Harry Potter?

  • Hey everybody if you like visual effects and software please follow me on my new twitter @jvalbarr

  • My thoughts during the first clip- "wft, how's this visual eff- WHAT THE SHIIIITTT?!"

  • @EsplodingBomb lol anybody back then who would have seen that would have shat their britches.

  • @EsplodingBomb I had the exact same thought. For back then, that's pretty awesome.

I'm sure there are movies people wish to be added, but personally I like the video as is. Especially to show those who have grown up with Jurassic Park or other beautifully CGI'ed movies just how far visual effects have come. Even if I'm completely and thoroughly sick of these remakes and remakes of remakes, I do look forward to see what other leaps creative souls and fascinating software can invent.

  • Awesome

  • How far would we go

  • lnrdshelby's "A short history of CG characters in movies"

    vimeo_com/14437767

  • @bengraphics Wonderful video...wonderful music...wonderful legacy... More videos on youtube should be like yours.

And "A short history of CG characters in movies" was great as well. :-)

  • @TheSOCW Ehh, I wouldnt consider a purely cgi movie to be visual effects. Thats more animation. Visual effects is more effecting real footage.

  • Awesome.

  • Spider-Man is an interesting choice for a movie about the advancement of VFX. I loved the movie, but the effects were pretty bad even when it was new. I kind of sank down in my theater seat in vicarious embarrassment for whoever was responsible.

Still, this is cool that it's for 5th graders. I wish I had been learning this stuff in 5th grade.

  • Old fx still amaze me, because nowadays it's pretty simple, green screen, compositing software, 3D modelling, some matte libraries bla bla. BUt then everything was camera tricks and manipulation of the film itself. It was awesome.

  • @MaghoxFr but the art of compositing, chroma keying and 3d modelling is ten times as complex as camera tricks and manipulation, so you cant really say its simple these days :P

  • @ThatAgent you are absolutely right. I guess it all comes down to the complexity of the times, both, nowadays and back in the day FX specialists are pushing boundaries. You're right.

  • @MaghoxFr

a lot a good scenes or movies now a days involves camera trickery over CGI. Like Jurassic park using large animatronics over CG.

  • LOL ''Lose this guy!!!!!''

  • love the video and your channel :))

  • What was the class that this was made for?

  • this is really awesome. need to plaster some on from the new decade .. 10' , 11'

  • @asaratkhandr

but 10' and 11' only had shitty CGI

  • @Ofir84 shitty cgi? what do you think the effects were made out of in the previous decade, puppets?

  • if there was no music in this video it would be far less entertaining, but still awesome. it's cool to see how far we've come and how much we were able to do back then

  • i'm not seeing a difference here

  • Visual Effects really boosted hollywood.

    pls watch:

  • tron!!!

    tron 2010= tron evolution

  • The scene of the exploding death star at 1:48 is taken from the special edition released end of the 90´s.

  • Fantastic Video!!! just some misses, Like The Matrix, LOTR Trilogy, the Harry Potter films.

  • That was SAVAGE and it was sooo good that i ''liked'' it and subscribed (I never do both)

  • nice video and nice song ;)

  • 1:16 is beautiful. I alwasy loved bi things computer made. Special old ones... That's what I was looking for in this video. I cant find any others...

  • awesome

  • can anyone tell me how they lost the guy at 2:56? I want to know the method. (i know its called rotoscoping, but thats all)

  • Where is The Matrix and any of LOTR?

  • no Méliès = ultimate fail

  • Good video but missing 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY !!!

  • 163 people have no clue what CGI is

  • No Matrix ?

  • I saw this new tech effect similar to this one at 4:23 , where there was a few subjects running on a beach and they were transformed from slim to heavy muscle, in real-time and also looking 101% real!

I forgot how it was called. Does anyone knows about it?

  • wtfff how is Space Odyssey not in this video? lol

  • Missing milestones like TRIP TO THE MOON, METROPOLIS, Pal's WAR OF THE WORLDS, 2001(!), MATRIX, & LORD OF THE RINGS.

Other noteworthys are the shamefully overlooked films of Karel Zeman, Futureworld's first use of 3D CG in '76, American Werewolf's leap in makeup FX, Dragonslayer's 'go-motion' dragon, Young Sherlock Holmes' first CG character (unless you wanna count Bit from Tron), Final Fantasy for first photoreal CG feature, and Sky Captain's all digital backlot.

  • @Heeemannn Thats nice, but I dont know what it has to do with visual effects and you sound condescending. There are many ways to inspire and touch the heart. VFX have been the greatest inspiration to me personally, they are what sustain me, and allow me freedom to inspire and contribute in turn. When people and health fail, VFX are still my reason to get up in the morning. The great VFX artists are my Real Life Heros.

  • wheres the matrix?

  • How come good old Terminator 2 effects look good, while the modern CGI looks.... well kinda crap to be honest?

  • @flimsyshow why do you think it's crap? the scene in t2 when the t800 arrive doesn't look realistic at all.

  • @bouchandre look at the one where T1000 goes through the steel bars... or the one where he emerges out of the floor. It's believeable... I have to yet see believeable CGI in modern films.

  • IM DOING VISUAL EFFECTS !!!

  • cool! as amazing as it is to see how far we've come, the fact that some of the old clips still look good 20+ years later is really amazing!

  • this is how smart we are all becoming to be good work everyone

    Joshua King

Special Effects horror Film Makeup Artist

  • Imagine being a person who just watched The Enchanted Drawing and thinking "WOW it can't get better than this!"

  • now that you have curious case of benjamin button, you just need the opposite, tron legacy. (to make jeff bridges look younger)

  • Thats shit!

  • 161 people are film school rejects.

  • thumbs up if you love animatronics better than cgi

  • super Classic

  • @Heeemannn Impressive

  • awful music

  • what do I have to major in to do this? What california colleges are good for this? Any of the CSUs or UC?

  • er... 2001: A Space Oddyssey? hello ?

  • Technology has come a long way. Today, technology shapes everything.

  • this reminds of something but im not quite sure lol thanks for the vid

  • um jurassic park and the kraken all the way ftw

  • sometimes i think what we gained in technology was paid for with artistic creativity.

  • it's funny because terminator 2 is the best out of all of them...
