If your doing a chronology of visual effects you can't show star wars and then show the upgraded versions from the late ninties in the same breath as the old ones because that effects technology didn't come out til later. I love this montage but that's kind oof cheap.
@MP312C That movie was garbage in meaning, but awesome in effects. If it had an effect on your society in general...oy. It wasn't THAT great a film in terms of story, to be honest, and is constantly overrated as "one of the greatest films." I don't care Kubrick directed it--the story was absolutely stupid, and I'm a lover of outstanding writing. I could have been more intelligent. But it was influential in terms of cinematic experience and a pinnacle of visual effects. But still overrated.
Yes. Left out 2001 - a landmark for camera trickery. Also left out The Matrix - which pretty much changed the game for the use of slow-mo and has influenced countless action movies since. But they got Star Wars in there thank god - it's the most obvious leap ahead in movie tech since moving from silent film to sound.
You used the lame remastered Death Star explosion and not the original? Don't play into George Lucas' greedy hands, he is just out to sexually assault your wallet!
THERES A FEW MOVIES THAT I CAN THINK OF THAT ARE LEFT OUT BUT STILL... I GOT TO SAY, YOU PUT A LOT OF EFFORT INTO THIS VIDEO JUST FROM THE NUMBER OF CLIPS ALONE. GREAT WORK -
@EsplodingBomb I had the exact same thought. For back then, that's pretty awesome.
I'm sure there are movies people wish to be added, but personally I like the video as is. Especially to show those who have grown up with Jurassic Park or other beautifully CGI'ed movies just how far visual effects have come. Even if I'm completely and thoroughly sick of these remakes and remakes of remakes, I do look forward to see what other leaps creative souls and fascinating software can invent.
Spider-Man is an interesting choice for a movie about the advancement of VFX. I loved the movie, but the effects were pretty bad even when it was new. I kind of sank down in my theater seat in vicarious embarrassment for whoever was responsible.
Still, this is cool that it's for 5th graders. I wish I had been learning this stuff in 5th grade.
Old fx still amaze me, because nowadays it's pretty simple, green screen, compositing software, 3D modelling, some matte libraries bla bla. BUt then everything was camera tricks and manipulation of the film itself. It was awesome.
@MaghoxFr but the art of compositing, chroma keying and 3d modelling is ten times as complex as camera tricks and manipulation, so you cant really say its simple these days :P
@ThatAgent you are absolutely right. I guess it all comes down to the complexity of the times, both, nowadays and back in the day FX specialists are pushing boundaries. You're right.
if there was no music in this video it would be far less entertaining, but still awesome. it's cool to see how far we've come and how much we were able to do back then
I saw this new tech effect similar to this one at 4:23 , where there was a few subjects running on a beach and they were transformed from slim to heavy muscle, in real-time and also looking 101% real!
I forgot how it was called. Does anyone knows about it?
Missing milestones like TRIP TO THE MOON, METROPOLIS, Pal's WAR OF THE WORLDS, 2001(!), MATRIX, & LORD OF THE RINGS.
Other noteworthys are the shamefully overlooked films of Karel Zeman, Futureworld's first use of 3D CG in '76, American Werewolf's leap in makeup FX, Dragonslayer's 'go-motion' dragon, Young Sherlock Holmes' first CG character (unless you wanna count Bit from Tron), Final Fantasy for first photoreal CG feature, and Sky Captain's all digital backlot.
@Heeemannn Thats nice, but I dont know what it has to do with visual effects and you sound condescending. There are many ways to inspire and touch the heart. VFX have been the greatest inspiration to me personally, they are what sustain me, and allow me freedom to inspire and contribute in turn. When people and health fail, VFX are still my reason to get up in the morning. The great VFX artists are my Real Life Heros.
@bouchandre look at the one where T1000 goes through the steel bars... or the one where he emerges out of the floor. It's believeable... I have to yet see believeable CGI in modern films.
Those 60's movies looked amazing! They end with facial mapping :) Get the DVD of Hancock to see how it's really done!
