i have been up to the top of this and the eiffel tower and don't think id dare do either now!do they still have the printed feet on the ground leading to the tower top lift?

When the Tower first opened in 1894 the area for the tower assent was totally diffarent to how it is now that part of the building was wide open origanoly it was an old English Village, by the 1900s it became Chinatown. i don't know at point that area became all bult up i know that in 1969 it was it was given a space theme i beleive, I remember level 6 was decarated blue sky & white clouds later redecorated to a victorion feel the aera where people come out ofthe lift

I hope Merlin don't change the tower too dramatically when they rebrand it as the 'Blackpool Eye', but I will be interested to see how they do it.

They always say that is the top level, but there is actually one more level beyond it (the staircase to it can e seen @6:12), but for some reason, it's always closed :/

@mistofoles it has a very low surround so it would not meet health and safety.

I went to the very top once where the flag is, lit a cigarette whilst drinking a pint of beer and standing on a pair of rollerskates then I fell off and floated gently down onto a tram where I was charged 10 pence for sitting upstairs, bloody cheek! Then to make things worse I ended up in some dive called Bispham I`m gonna Benidorm next year:(

mesmoland....BLACKPOOL IS SO GOOD,that i intend to move there in 9yrs,i even support BLACKPOOL FC,even though i am in scotland....i am also extremely interested in the history of BLACKPOOL,how it was created from a small fishing village,its such a magical place,much better than any euro beach resort.

Travellers made a fair on the beach near the tower end then more people started coming in the Victorian era as the Bank Holiday break and train travel became common place.All of the pleasure beach was sand at first and used to flood sometimes,underneath the flying machine there is still visible sand under the main support (not a public area).

you are spot on,sarah boswell,known as 'Gypsy sarah' lived in a primitive tent in the sandhills near the star inn,was one of these early travellers that you mention....there was also a smithy at bispham as late as 1942....ive a photo of rustic cottage,norbreck's oldest cottage which was demolished in 1924....the whole area from fleetwood to st.annes,to me,is the best in Britain,i was in Blackpool in november during the windy weather,i go there at least 15 times a year,im in love with the place.

I live here and trust me, its not as good as you think. Try paying holiday makers prices even though you're a resident, it's not cheap. Even the local shops rip you off.
