  • I fancy myself a good tenor. I'm not sure if I should find this video inspiring or depressing.

I actually am pretty good, but I'm just a big fish in a small pond.

  • what a powerfulllllll voice !!!

  • AVE MARIA

  • Damn. I just can't hit that high note on "hora".

  • ta muito bom.... adorei

  • just been lisstening to jose carreras singing ave maria.magnificent

  • BELÍSSIMA E EMOCIONANTE MÚSICA SACRA, A QUAL TIVE A FELICIDADE E O PRIVILÉGIO DE CANTAR, QUANDO ERA ADOLESCENTE E MEMBRO DO CORAL DO COLÉGIO ESTADUAL AUGUSTO MEIRA (CEAM), JUNTAMENTE COM O CORAL DO COLÉGIO GENTIL BITTENCOURT, NA BASÍLICA DE NAZARETH (AO MAGNÍFICO SOM DAQUELE ÓRGÃO) E NA CAPELA DO COLÉGIO GENTIL BITTENCOURT (NUM DIA DO CÍRIO E DA TRANSLADAÇÃO DE NOSSA SENHORA DE NAZARETH). INESQUECÍVEL!!!!!!

    (BELÉM DO PARÁ).

  • Better than the version of Pavarotti.

  • the best version yet, he sings the entire ave maria

  • Another wonderful rendition of Ave maria - VITAS, the best voice ever

  • My fav tenor! Lorg live Mr. Carreras

  • what a beautiful rendition of the Ave Maria this guy truly deserved to be among the first and real three tenors what a great powerful voice.

  • I feel sorry for the 11 dislikes. One person hates the video and someone mentioned the word screaming. Jose Carreras speaks and sings in many languages so I doubt that he is singing anything here so incorrectly that it takes anything away from his singing. I am not a Roman Catholic and I am not interested in the Latin or what it means. I just know that this is beautiful music and beautifuly sung as some would say - by the greatest tenor of the 20th and 21st century. I certainly would not argue.

  • Fascinating to hear and see the change in technique between this video done pre Carreras's illness and how he sang afterwards. His voice is more effortlessly pure here and has a stronger baritone ring. From the late 1980's he dropped his lower jaw in an exaggerted manner with singing A-flat and above. His later tone was far more mask and resonant.

I like his later voice a bit more because it has more drama but he is always a great tenor.

  • Maestrazazazo!!!!!

  • IF YOU WANT TO SEE A YOUNG SOPRANO AND STAR OF THE FUTURE PERFORM THIS SONG SEARCH "OKSANA LEPSKA" ON YOUTUBE :)))))

  • AVE MARIA!!! I repeat the great architect of universe, lucifer is dead!

    Anna

  • Perfekt!!!

  • Bella musica

  • heel mooi bedankt ,johanna

  • @johanna794 wow pure beauty!!

  • Bravissimo Carreras!

  • JOSE CARRERAS EL GRANDE.

  • multumesc

  • Boldog Karácsonyt!

  • JOSÉ: YOU ARE THE GREATEST TENOR EVER!!!!!!

  • There is no music more beautiful than classical. It is the true essence of music. Although I'm a gospel-rnb singer, I bow to professionally trained opera singers, because they're just in a league of they're own. This song was stunningly done. Moving, powerful, soft and heartfelt.

  • i hate it

  • Wonderful!!!

  • THIS ONE MAKES ME CRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  • 1990 more like

  • i too am not sure Josep looked like this in 1980. can´t it be mistake ?

  • Great Jose',I played with him for the Italian television:amazing voice!

  • se llama josep no jose

  • Lip sync?

  • @aguacun Yes, this is the same recording from the album. Pity - it would have been nice to see him sing it.

  • thank you!

  • fuckin nygga ! don't speak polsih krystyna .ave maria and shit ass!

  • Some little notes on the text given by this clip.

    1. It's not "ventris Cuie tu" it's "ventris tuis Jesus". Although it seems José sings "Jesu".

    2. "Santa Maria" should be "Sancta Maria". For this is Latin and Santa is Italian.

    3. "Nor et in hora" is "Nunc et in hora".

The last sentence in English would be "Now and in the hour of death."

    Merry Christmas! :-)

  • Thank you for your comment an Merry Christmas to you too

  • You're welcome, Fritz. And thanks for putting this nice clip on YouTube!

  • hi i'm italian and i wanna ask if i must pronounce the in T in sancta

    thx

  • Yes, you should pronounce the T in sancta.

  • @fritz5109 Jose Carreras pronounces exactly as you corrected…. Perfect Latin for him who studied it in rome and Milan as he did napolitan in Naples… He is by far the best intellectually prepared tenor of the last fifty years…Pavarotti is a brick compared to this man…intellectually I mean….

  • @NLfilmfan Firstly Carreras pronounces everything perfectly, listen more carefully. Secondly it is "ventris tui Iesus" not "tuis".

  • @croc17

I never said he doesn't pronounce everything perfectly. However, I would say that's a thin "s" at approx 1:12. My Latin classes were a long time ago and I guess all those booklets that go with cd's have made me even more confused. I have one here in my hand and it reads: "ventris tuis Jesus". I'm glad you learned me the correct spelling again.

  • @NLfilmfan But Carreras is famous for this.... changing everything cause he just forgot lol

    Dont hate him please...lol

  • @NLfilmfan Well, looks like he's too awesome to care about it. The song should care about to suit Carreras :)

  • @NLfilmfan It is "ventris tui", genitive singular masculine, "of your womb". Brush up your latin!

    Josep Carreras's performance is impeccable.

  • nice,bravooo

  • Bardzo ladne.

  • Jose can be proud of his career. Past his prime now, he was a beautiful tenor for a long time. Survived cancer and came back singing nicely. Maybe not in the very top ranks but a beautiful voice. I loved his

rendition of "Chenier" I would have loved a career like his. So BRAVO Mr. Carrreras

  • great! even though I prefer Domingo...he's just more emotional, but carreras voice is the greatest!

  • Increible !!!! Maravilloso Carreras !!!

  • OMG.... Absolutely breathtaking!!!!

  • Vraiment une voix magnifique!

  • Que voz tan consistente y afinada...grande maestro carreras!!!

  • here he seems to sing like Mario Lanza

  • ..........

  • *** VERY NICE ***

  • GOOD

  • in my opinion, one of the best "J.S. Bach-Ave Maria" versions

  • *Beautiful*!!! Incridibile voice!!! Fenomenale!!!

    Ivone da Luz.

  • maybe no one know it but i've seen a video who showed carreras who sayd a sweargod during the registration of the song!AVE MARIA MA PORCO IDDIO!

  • If you like JOSÉ CARRERAS check THE 30 TENORS in my playlist SUPER TENOR ARIAS ( including CLAUDIO SOTELO performing ARIA DEL CIRUJANO as a world première ) and tell me which one you prefer !

But, please, dont forget, if you can, to help the JOSÉ CARRERAS LAUKAEMIA FOUNDATION ( Fundación Josep Carreras contra la leucemia ) !

    Thank you

  • good but maria callas is way better....

  • He sounds okay! I like him.

  • at la scala covent garden the met and hamburg the would dissagree with you but....we all know you know better hahahha...the world was in fact wrong and you are so right.....right???

  • you making zero of envying!!! hahahaa

  • hmm ... perhaps a little harsh ... don't shoot me down

  • Both the set and the fact that they made him dubb himself, is in the best European tradition of H O R R I B L E television making. If I were Carreras then, I would have jumped the contract, faked fainting, put on a " I'm not performing in this set, and much less dubbing" routine.

And if i was in bad voice, hey " Check out my singing nephew" line to get out of the situation.

Whatever it was, it's just another one of European television's career destroying, embarrassing moments.

  • Dude, how do u know if this is dubbed or not? Maybe dubbed for better audio quality.

As for European television u dont seem to know jack-shit.

Italy, Spain, France & Germany only dubb foreign TV. These four contries is not Europe alone. Back to school?

  • Look Mr. CrapTV Defensor, maybe it's too cold up there in Swede, and your brain is half frozen, but doubt you have any sense of television making, when all you upload is yourself playing with your head cut.

    "Jack shit", is your playing.

"Back to school", is that were you learned to "dude" people around, retard?

Plus, who cares about the rest of TV in Europe?

In fact when do people ever mention Sweden?, of course with "creative" people like you...it tells.

  • Haha. Did you get offended when I said you dont know about Eu TV? You need too relax and why this trashtalking of my homecountry?

One person who mention this country is your countrys biggest documentary maker. And he speaks of how good it is and how USA should take after Sweden.

Even if i dont like you, I still choose not to talk crap about USA in fact I love it.

    Peace

  • Ofended me? Nah. Not from you.

But your the one "jack-shitting" yourself around.

    "biggest documentary maker"

You mean that he is fat and large?

So a country up near the Artic, with less than 10 millions people can tell the U.S. how to deal with their own peculiar and complex issues / necessities.

Go ahead, keep making "sense" ala Swede.

  • Estrella fugaz... Pavarotti, muerto, aún brilla!

  • QUE BELLISIMA VOZ

  • Si,es excelente,muy bello

  • Certainly this video is after he got ill in 1987. His voice on this recording belongs to a playback from earlier years.

It is not correct to say this is from 1980...

  • except...if you look at Carreras' hairline...it looks as if it had already receeded from the chemo therapy treatments he had received when he had cancer. Perhaps, this was an earlier voval recording set to a more recent (1990) video of him. Just food for thought.

  • Everyone who listens to Carreras and knows his vocal abilities also knows that this aria couldn't have been recorded in 1985. Even four-five years earlier his voice was not clear on high notes, and that was very obvious in 1982/83. So this aria must have been recorded either in 1980. or even a year earlier.

    Most beautiful voice.

  • Wonderful performance...Jose the Best Forever!

  • I've loved Carreras since I learned about him in the mid 80's. Ofcourse his recordings back in the 70's he sounds like a God, but yet here I can still hear the beautiful voice that only he has.

     BRAVO!

  • yes this is playback and recording from cca. 1985.This CD with Vienna boyschoir

  • Time passes and leaves scars in all human beings. Those looking for perfection in tenors should understand that Gigli in 1925 was not Gigli 1950. Same happened to Pava (Check Pava in his last few years). Same happens to Domingo. And to EVERYBODY. This interpretation is GOOD. Very tender. Very colorful. Very touching. Carreras in his maturity/decline. But CARRERAS. Grande Maestro.

  • i heard him in 1996 and his voice was really bad on the top notes yet.also on G and A.i'm really surprised to hear him now..in this video his voice is not so bad.

  • yes i pretty sure this is 95 carreras...he really is still a good tenor, it wasnt until about 2003 that his voice became much weaker in the high notes, and is quite wobbaly now

  • pfff its NOT 95 its 85

is this song really sang by carreras in 1995? are you sure? he sounds to good in 95 to be carreras.

  • this is the most beautiful music to hear, so peaceful and heavenly...
