@sparklingbeautyyx if its not there, try checking out your settings, it is around the menu area. and once u get there, just select image format as RAW.
Great Vid. I am planning to buy a Nikon D5100 cam. should i get the 18-50mm VR kit with it or go for the body only and save for a 50/f1.8? It would kinda be used for photoshoots. And later used to shoot portrait and landscape when we tour other countries. Thanks! keep posting more vids.
I love photography but im 15 and have no money I bought fujifilm finepix s2950 with my christmas money I love it I know its not a DLSR but its a start. You are cool and I sub you!
Hey there, love your videos , I am new to photography and trying to find out as much as I can about how to use my camera D70. This is taking a lot of time learning about iso, aperture values, white balance, shutter speeds, and on top of this we are told to learn how to shoot RAW. This is a whole new subject and many books and videos are available, but if you do not know how to use raw before you start taking pictures is there a any point
What do you think? a good jpeg pic could be ruined
my thoughts on this after a few years of shooting:
1 - disagree to a point. i shoot RAW+JPEG, and only use the RAW when i absolutely need it to tweak / adjust a shot that looks wrong in the JPEG. otherwise, JPEG is done.
2 - agree.
3 - sorta. bodies get replaced every 2 years. lenses stay. however, FEET are not the same as ZOOM. completely different effect. zoom is like cropping, feet are for changing perspective.
4 - disagree. only do it if needed. don't waste time in front of a PC.
Hello Mr. Polin! Thank you for the informative videos! What inexpensive, digital camera would you suggest to a hobbyist (me) that loves taking nice pictures?

Hi! I'm having a hard time focusing on the eyes of a subject, with my D60 + 35mm 1.8. I set the camera to AF-s, place the focusing point on the eye and without recomposing (so I don't mess up the depth of field), press the shutter release and I end up with a focused nose and a soft eye. Any idea why this is happening ?
I really appreciate your feedback, since I got this lens a few days ago and I'm afraid it's faulty.
love da fro. the HD defines it greatly. anyways, useful tips as i am a beginner that just got a nikon d70s with a 28-80mm lense! will be busy watching all your vids.
Dude you are hilarious, and very informative. I almost died laughing a couple times at the wheel chair and at the Wayne Gretzky parts. Thank you for all your information.
@JaredPolin hey i don't want to have to buy many lenses...isn't there one great lens that is great for resolution, high HD quality, great AF, image stabilization, etc?
@JaredPolin, what's a good 2.8 or better lens for a canon. I'm going to a camera show this month and I'm going to see if I can get it for a good price.
Haha I'm self taught photographer and there were things said in this video that had me smacking my forehead in disbelief that I had forgotten some of the basics. Wow how embarrassing.

@Mrjjgreene If you're going with fixed 2.8 then prime lens would reduce the cost dramatically. Also, it depends on what you want to shoot? Portraits or landscape? For portraits, I always suggest 85mm 1.8 or 1.4 depending on your budget. Why 85 over 50? Because sometimes I don't like to be in my client's face when taking portraits. I like to keep my distance. But Jared is 100% right when he says, go with 2.8 or better and def avoid kit lens.
hye jared.. i planning to buy canon 60d (body) next week .. can you recommend me what lens to use.. but not so expensive.. i'm so newbie but fall in love with photography year ago... never use dslr before....thank you
@willcitoman97 You need a raw file viewer in order to see pictures taken in raw. Google raw file viewer and download the software. It will allow you to view your raw files. You could purchase lightroom which will allow you to edit your raw file and convert in jpeg for you after the edit.

Thanks...
good fun to watch and this guy really knows his stuff only one question im sorry to admit im not Nikon man..im going with Canon so you do anything for canon?
I really have to ask you something about the lens part and I really hope you will answer me. What do you think of the stock lens of the D3000? I am planing to buy one , it will be my first dslr , and I really don't want to make mistakes like that , because I am really short on money and will make a lot of effort to get that money for the body+lens kit. Is it better to buy just the body and other lenses at about same price? Thank you in advance
great advice but there is one thing that i have to say. cropping....i agree with you saying shoot it the way you want it so you want have to crop in.but what if you do shoot it right and you look close enough to see another photo that can be made from it? ex. bride and groom having a moment and them smiling...great shoot right? but what if you just want the lips that make a nice photo as well....you would crop it in right? but yeah man your pretty sick better then my mentor but ssssssh!
hi i have just enrolled in the photography school hve a nikon d90 but i dun know much ABT it im trying to learn frm ur tutorials can plz do a tutorial on how to adjust apperature, shutter speed n iso pleaseeeee ur help will go a long way....i jus hve the eye n passion to shoot but technically im on ground zero
I've been shooting for sometime now and I usually shoot for my school during events and stage shows, but I usually shoot stage shows. I always shoot at JPEG Fine because I'm not that into post processing and I'm the kind of person that likes to get it right on the camera the first time..... but lately my buddies have been telling me to shoot raw and I was wondering since your advice is also to shot raw, I was wondering do you have any video or tutorial concerning post processing?
@9unslinger On the web site we have a ton of lightroom videos. Remember its not about getting it right in the camera that makes jpeg not the better choice in my opinion. There is a lot of work in the camera that has to go into getting the right settings for jpeg such as sharpening, color saturation, white balance and they all effect your final image and are locked. In RAW you can control those things post.
Hi I'm shooting for my school concerts stage play etc...I always shoot in jpeg fine because I seldom do post processing and i don't like it that much and because I'm the type that likes to get images right the first time. But lately all of my photo buddies have started shooting raw and are persuading me to join them.....So, I was wondering do you have any videos or tutorials regarding post processing of raw files? (btw i shoot with nikon) Thank you for taking time to read this post.

@Trazor123 the camera is a good start but not the lens. The lens does not let enough light in thus why i recommend a 35 1.8 or spending a little bit of money to pick up a faster lens like a sigma 18-50 for 420 bucks. Well worth it when just starting out.
Hey man... I have a question for you. I bought a D300s a few months ago, and I am trying to get a lot more serious with photography. Right now my only telephoto lens is the ultra-cheap 70-200mm lens that I had with my D40, so I was planning on getting the Nikon 70-300mm VR II lens. HOWEVER, now I am thinking of getting the SIGMA 70-200 f2.8. There's no way I can afford the Nikon f2.8 for a very long time. What do you think?
@sexualburgerking There are a few options, you can look for a used nikon 70-2000 vr 1 which would be a little over 1,000. The sigma wouldnt be a bad way to start but if you can stretch it and find a vr1 id go with that. There is also the nikon 80-200 2.8 which sells new for around 900. It is a slower focusing lens but still a great lens.
Thanks for posting this, I bought the d3000 yesterday and I'm getting it tomorrow =D (with the kit lens because at the moment I don't have the money for a better lens). Its my first DSLR camera so I'm completely new to this, I've been reading the maunal online and I feel like everything is in a different language Lol.
Can you make a video about taking photos in a concert and club situation?
THANKS and I subscribed

What would you recommend for someone who can't really afford Lightroom or Photoshop for editing photos?
MrAChae 1 year ago
great advice but there is one thing that i have to say. cropping....i agree with you saying shoot it the way you want it so you want have to crop in.but what if you do shoot it right and you look close enough to see another photo that can be made from it? ex. bride and groom having a moment and them smiling...great shoot right? but what if you just want the lips that make a nice photo as well....you would crop it in right? but yeah man your pretty sick better then my mentor but ssssssh!

@MahdFliesHigh i personally would not crop in i would try and capture that during the day.

excluding the autofocus feature, is a 35mm better than a 50mm?

@mikkiseva The wider on the DX will be a little better on the dx cameras.

willonce 1 year ago
@willonce I recommend the 35 1.8 as it will autofocus on all the cameras where the 50 wont on the lower end cameras.

Greetings
I've been shooting for sometime now and I usually shoot for my school during events and stage shows, but I usually shoot stage shows. I always shoot at JPEG Fine because I'm not that into post processing and I'm the kind of person that likes to get it right on the camera the first time..... but lately my buddies have been telling me to shoot raw and I was wondering since your advice is also to shot raw, I was wondering do you have any video or tutorial concerning post processing?
9unslinger 1 year ago
@9unslinger On the web site we have a ton of lightroom videos. Remember its not about getting it right in the camera that makes jpeg not the better choice in my opinion. There is a lot of work in the camera that has to go into getting the right settings for jpeg such as sharpening, color saturation, white balance and they all effect your final image and are locked. In RAW you can control those things post.

hey :)
im buying a d3000 with a 18-55 lens (to be specific its a D30001855KIT (: )
is that good for a starter kit thing :)
Thanks :)
Trazor123 1 year ago
@Trazor123 the camera is a good start but not the lens. The lens does not let enough light in thus why i recommend a 35 1.8 or spending a little bit of money to pick up a faster lens like a sigma 18-50 for 420 bucks. Well worth it when just starting out.

i hope you weren't serious when you said that you tossed your negs away

What do you think?
sexualburgerking 1 year ago
@sexualburgerking There are a few options, you can look for a used nikon 70-2000 vr 1 which would be a little over 1,000. The sigma wouldnt be a bad way to start but if you can stretch it and find a vr1 id go with that. There is also the nikon 80-200 2.8 which sells new for around 900. It is a slower focusing lens but still a great lens.
I hope this helps.
