  • watch it with the snow on if you got it like that lol its awesome!!!!

  • The magic of a 3-piece rock band.

  • This is such a masterpiece... AND he slips in so many classic riffs he could be sued... but it's such respectful riffing, call it professional courtesy!

  • This is such a masterpiece...

  • Is this when Mountain played Newcastle, UK? damn if it is I was at that show, cheers for the vid!

  • Get Well Leslie!!! WE LOVE you!!!

  • I am a descendent of the Coffin family of Nantucket. This song is dedicated to Owen Coffin of the ill-fated whaleship Essex who drew the short straw that day. Books have been written about this, movies made, but this may be the only song dedicated to Uncle Owen. Very cool! Love it. (He drew the short straw and was shot and eaten by his fellow crew.)

  • I am a Leslie West maniac. I am collected his all LPs, and searched the Internet for this song. He released this song at least on 3 LPs (the best is the 2LP Japanese concert in 1973 when he plays for 34 minutes the Natucket Sleighride).

    thanks for this!

  • @tiborvivi Check out my video. Leslie was the first thing i heard (which liked) in my life, I got a 45RPM LP with Missisippi queen and Sittin`on a rainbow. The 1º i heard, its my treasure. I like a lot the way i knew rock.

  • @tiborvivi Thanks bro!

  • The KILLED it at Hippiefest when i went at DTE (old Pine Knob) and so did Canned Heat and Rare Earth was amazing

  • Love Leslie West & Corky Laing...Nantucket Sleighride ROCKS !!!!!!!

  • Great stuff. I was at this one

  • ime still listenin,he could sing,and play

  • I agree with the earlier comment the only version of this song is on the road goes ever on album which is available on cd. I saw Mountain live in 72 or 73 on Sheffield they played Nantucket Sleighride about 18 mins as I remember. Good times!

  • Sorry Leslie but you aint jimi

I saw MOUNTAIN in 1971 at the EASTOWN THEATRE in Detroit with HUMBLE PIE

    ya shouda been there!!!!

  • Northwestern University - late late 1969 or early 1970... blew us alkl away.. remember, Jeff? I wasn't even there and your TELLING blew me away!

  • has it been since 1969 that the power trio of all [power trios blew us all away at northwestern university...???

  • Here are some b&w photos I shot of Mountain with Felix Pappalardi in 1970 in Los Angeles. Google "cacheagency", then click on "Photographers and Collections" and click on Jeff Allen. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on page 5 and you can view all my Mountain photos. Enjoy!

  • @r1bikecam I just did and WOW dude....EXCELLENT photos of Felix and Leslie in full flight! I recommend to all to check this guy's photography out, lots of great stuff besides Mountain there. And, oh yeah, it's 'cache agency'....2 words (much easier to find that way) !!!! :)

  • Driving a 1973 Mach 1 Twin Peaks on 8 track listening full blast man did they know how to rock Leslie on feedback great times

  • WOW, man Iremember this as a young lad in the early 70`s , love it , memory road !

  • Great

  • Mountain is awsome played for our jr senior prom Ridgewood High School Ridgewood NJ in 1971

  • noway!

  • All you people who live in England will recognize this as the theme from the old 70's news magazine program Weekend World. A great rock tune lllllllllllllllllll

  • That was a cover version by a band named Quartz. I think I still have the 7" of the Quartz version...

    Always a classic tune, though!

  • no, it was World in Action

  • @TheBlindbat1

Sorry, but tisgoner is correct: Weekend World.

  • @TheBlindbat1 Weekend World with 'Bwian' Walden

  • Mountain always gives it all they have live.ROCK ON.

  • The only true version of this song is on the album: Mountain Live-The Road goes Ever On(circa 1970). Truly a masterpiece of live performance, Felix, Leslie, Corky and Steve Knight-anything else just pales by comparison.

  • maybe not the only but I agree, that is the version I like the best too.

  • all I have to say is: FUCK YEAH!

  • Leslie West is a guitar hero and genius

  • true.. I agree with Amagic... Felix had the song.. I guess it was his. 30 years ago I first loved this song.. and now I;m workin to save them....

  • Not quite the same without the keys in this song....Come on Leslie, pay for a keyboard player....Sounds like a cheap cover...the late Felix Pappalardi sang this...Leslie doesn't have the range for this song...

  • And you know you're the last true love I'll ever meet!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!!

  • In the very near future all hunting of whales will be illegal and banned as they truly preserve the biosphere with their songs for Earth. Namaste and many Blessings for the Conscious Guardians now.

  • All of the Whale species hold information destined for fully Conscious Humans, who will take over as Guardians of the Earth Living Library. Thank you for your question and concern in Peace, Love and Light.

  • @detroitchuckie Perhaps it doesn't impact my every day life. Unlike you I think beyond that to what I perceive is a responsibility to live beyond just what impacts me. You are a selfish ass. That's fine. Go about your job and your life without any regard to anything that doesn't impact you.

    Fortunately others do care.

  • Well Leslis WAS considered for the Rolling Stones......

  • beat it , something i'm not sure of , and paint it black

  • Holy shit you could light bulbs of that power ,leslie total legend.

  • i stand corrected.

  • hey cyarwood, just to set everybody straight, felix pappalardi was the bassist and lead singer of the Young Rascals, a late sixties R&B band . also i can assure you that leslie west is alive and .......well he's alive.

  • You dont know what your talkin about! Felix Cavaliere was the lead singer of the Young rascals! Besides he played keyboards.

  • NOT the lead singer of the Young Rascals! Felix shared lead vocal duties with the great Eddie Brigati !

  • Great band! Thanks!

  • Felix Pappalardi, bassist for Mountain, is the one that died.

  • Took me back 40 years. To a very good place and time. Thank you. Darrell in Phoenix

  • my favorite guitar solo ever is the solo on Nantacket Sleighride from "the road goes ever on" that was nagic....

  • Great music! ! Thanks for sharing video!

  • Leslie West and Mountain put on a great show in Baltimore 21 October 2008, opening for Joe Satriani. See the official Mountain website before shoveling too much dirt over Leslie West's coffin, O.K.?

  • what is the Mountain website?

  • wait a minute... I thought Leslie West died...

  • O_o huh?

  • I'm thinking of Carmine Appice- my bad.

  • Response to dipper888. You are correct but it still is some of Leslie West's best guitar work.

  • Agreed

  • Jack Bruce the best bass player of all time.

  • The live version of this song on "The Road Goes Ever On" 16 minutes of Heaven.....

  • Agree!

  • What about the 32 minute version from "Twin Peaks". On the album they made it 2 sides but the remastered CD has it in it's entirety as part 1 & part 2, but it is the continuous song. It's amazing if you love Mountain and Jack Daniel's.

  • Yes, that was a great version also but for me it was a little disjointed and didn't have the perfect flow of the 17 minversion...

  • And Corky did not play drums on Twin Peaks..

  • HELL YA DIG IT MAN ;LOL

  • HELL YA DIG IT MAN.LOL

  • Lol, did you guys hear the Beat it at the end?

  • best it is such an esoteric term what is the best this and the best that it is all relative. who is the best relative ya ever did now that might be of interest. "Gee, Aunt Robin Marie, I've never engaged in this type of behavior before" "Shut Up and drop that trow" Nantucket Sleighride of your life. Dreams of Milk and Honey to boot. There she blows!!!!
  • What's with all the posing and shit from the bass player? Embarrassing.

    Leslie, hire me!

  • This tune is an Epic as far as raw feelgoes. If u were around back in the day,i hope u concur!

  • Just enjoyed hearing these old favorites free of the fuzz from my old "Best of Mountain" tape I retained from the eighties. These guys were a milestone (or keystone) in my eyes as a rock'n'roll favorite unlike any others - everyone ENJOY!!!!

  • Weekend World!!!!

  • have to tip my high hat to the previous poster--the version on "the road goes ever on" is the best I've heard--Leslie's playing was superb and Steve Knight's organ added a mysterious dimension to the tune that has never been recaptured in any subsequent versions----Leslie has said he wasn't very fond of Knight and he never replaced him

  • I still wait to see an old 70.s version. Loved the live version from "The road goes ever on"

  • they should get Jack Bruce back,Felix was a junkie.matter of fact, they should get Robin Trower and Leslie in the same band, that would kicks ass-Robin,leslie,Jack and let's say Corky and Ginger baker,2 drummers for once.

  • Junkie or not, Felix rocked which is more than can be said for most. He made an enormous contribution to that band.

  • Jack Bruce was technically the best bass player of the 60's & 70's. However, Felix Pappalardi's contribution to Mountain and Rock n Roll was gigantic. Artistically speaking he was #1. Technically speaking maybe #2. His Gibson EB-0 bass sound was every bit as signature as Leslie's on guitar. But it was his artistic talent why Cream, Hendrix, Mountain, John Sebastian, and many other supergroups wanted Felix to be involved. Mic Jagger called Felix Pappalardi the "smartest man in Rock n Roll."

  • i believe you mean john paul jones was the best bassist of the 60s and 70s

  • There where a few; Felix P, Jack B, J-P J, John Entwhistle, Gary Thain, John Glascock.. a

  • Entwhistle was wey above the rest...

  • john entwhistle was the best bassist off all time

  • entwhistle was awesome, number one for me too, John Paul Jones?

  • uh. . . . "best bassist of all time"?? That would be Jack Bruce, not Entwistle.

  • always hated beauty contests.....lotsa great musicians, many of whom (if they're human) suck from time to time.

  • Absolutely. Jack was the right guy, sorry about that Felix, but suicide and spousal abuse will always leave a man in the same spot, especialy suicide. Thats a great line up.

  • uniplmr: I must correct you; Felix's wife got away with murder. Take your "suicide" and "spousal abuse" bullsh-t and put it .....

  • Ya!What was the deal with that whole scene? Did she kill him?

  • yeah she shot him in the neck and he died. RIP Felix

  • Seen the band when they were on the knebworth bill with Deep Purple in 85 and Mark Clarke done a good job granted it was not the same as seeing the original lineup but credit were credit is due he played a good set

  • I think Corky MUST play in Mountain for them to be allowed to call themself Mountain, I Think he owns the name?

  • Not true. Mountain has toured with over the years with Corky Laing protege drummer Steve Loungo. Look up "Steve Luongo's Drum solo with The John Entwistle Band LIVE" in youtube. This guy has some of the quickest hands to ever touch a set of drums.

  • Also played with Long Island phenom Paul "The Right Reverend" Beretta

  • Ok, I thought they toured as "Leslie West".

Yes Luongo is a very good, strong drummer, did very good with John Entwistle (god bless him) another of my favourite bass players.

  • Dep, I think I read recently that Pappalardi had left Corky his (Pappalardi's) "share" of the Mountain name in his will. So when Corky tours with Leslie, it's "Mountain", and when he doesn't, it's "The Leslie West Band".

  • That was the deal in the mid-late 70's, and for most of the 80s and 90's, but Leslie HAS toured as Mountain without Corky, albeit extremely rarely. Either Steve Luongo or Paul Baretta has filled in on drums.

  • metal foundation!

  • Leslie West started way back with the Elegant 4 a long Island band that never made it big outside the NY area, but they did okay since West was playing a white and gold Gretsch that in the 60's went for about a grand. . He went on to Mountain and along with Led Zepplin, Hendrix and Blue Cheer created the foundations of metal. Back then is was just Rock and Roll

  • Fab!!!!!!!!!! I have searched for this since 'Wold in Action' was on our TV screens in the 80's........Fab themetune and fab tune.

  • The show you were thinking of was called 'Weekend World' with Peter Jay. It was on Sunday lunch time.

  • Thanks FizzieCat, you are right. As I was a teen the contents of the programme didnt much interest me then, but the tune opened up a whole new world of music to me that I luv to this day x

  • Yes, that's exactly what happened to me! Do a search here for 'Jam For World In Action-Jonathon Weston - Instrumental Only'. It was a great piece of music also!

  • ive got the directors cut dvd of woodstock and mountain fukkin rule, i read that pete townsend rated them very highly around this time, who's next has definately mr west' and co. influence, sonically speaking.

  • thats because Leslie West, as you most likely know already, was the guitarist for several songs on that album! :)

  • did they invent metal.....

  • Ummm, I think helped start it.

  • just say yes lol

  • Leslie West, the guitarist, certainly was the 1st guy trying to do something different with the blues and rock music in the late 60's. He tried sounding as esoteric as possible...fast, slow high low... NEVER performing the same solo twice. Even the tempos were ad-libbed. Listen to Southbound Train from Woodstock on youtube for a glimpse of the birth of heavy metal, b4 it had a name!

  • Amen!!!

  • kct !

  • RIP Felix P.!!!!! :(

  • It is Corky.

They could do Travelling in the dark without keyboard

  • Are his Amps Randall?

  • Leslie uses Marshall amps...

  • Leslie used SUNN amps

  • Yes he USED to use Sunn amps with a Les Paul Jr guitar. However in the mid/late 80's, Leslie switched to Marshalls.

  • I hit Post before finishing. It was supposed to read "when recording the original"

  • Weekend World!!!!

  • you're showing your age! ;op

    Classic tune

  • no keyboards

  • It`s a pity we can`t get a clip from nantucket sleighride in-71.. and Travelling in the dark! I`ve been wondering why they never perfoprm that song live nowadays?

  • Leslie West is a master guitarest. He has brought this song to 2007 with his vocals - and he hit the mark. Rock on guys!

  • sometimes when you're used to hearing a song's studio version (especially if you've heard it for years and loved it) it's tough to enjoy it in a different context. I love the song but have to admit I prefer the studio version with the keyboards and Pappalardi's vocal.

  • Looks like a college stage.

  • Hey,

Anybody know why the Comment Reply function isn't working? Replies meant for insertion in a thread are winding up at the head of the Comment List and make no sense without their context. And didn't you used to be able to edit comments?

  • It sucks thats why. your comment will take about 17 secs to post, if it can get by your firewall AND youtubes horrible cache system. Sometimes you just need to refresh, and even sometimes you need to close and reopen your browser...

  • Ah. Thanks. Seem to have the hang of it now. Are you going to be out on the West Coast for any of their tour dates later in the month?

  • Where was this filmed? Anybody know??

  • On bass is Richie Scarlet.

  • Who is the bass player here?

  • Is this definately Corky Laing? I here the guy hates flying, or something, so he is often missing from non US appearences of Mountain. When I went to see mountain about 2 years back there was a different guy playing - and Alan Scwartzberg did 'Twin Peaks'

  • Yes, that definitely is Corky Laing.

  • "Yes, that definitely is Corky Laing".

Steve Loungo was the other drummer he sometimes toured with, I thought it might be him as he had longer hair than Corky Laing - but I'll take your word for it :-)

  • Did anybody else notice that Corky Lang is hitting his cymbals so hard they are falling down all over the place? Still a wild man at 60.

  • Good thing the roadie eventually did

  • With the risk of getting my butt kicked, I would say that without Steve Knight i sounds a bit hollow. I just love the " Twin Peaks " version... 30 minuts of jamming and improv really nice stuff. It took a bit of getting used to:D Guess u know what I am talking about:D

  • No Mountain fan will kick yer butt, we all miss Steve Knights contributions. Leslie's only mistake was not using a keyboardist in his post-Mountain years. Felix Pappalardi swore by Steve Knight. So did I. Still West is best.

  • Felix used to say that Steve added color but West never liked the guy, personally, and claims he didn't like the organ. To this day, he refuses to play with one. Steve just wasn't the party hardy guy that the others were. Leslie and Felix did great duets, but this is Felix's song to sing. Whatever the case, it is lacking even for a die-hard Mountain fan. The "Painted Black" stuff does no justice to a beautifully written song by Felix and Gail Collins.

  • It is true that Leslie didnt like Steve Knight, but the reason was because Steve didnt like to jam onstage, and wanted to stick to "studio textbook" on stage. Since Leslie, Felix, and Corky were much more into improv, Steve was just the odd man out. Leslie's only mistake was losing the keys. Mountain sounds better with keys. Even without them though, West is best.

  • It wasn't limited to jamming on stage. It was also personal like drugs and partying which is really why straight Steve was the odd man out. I agree with JoeLeer, the stuff is hollow. Except for his solo acoustic numbers, I've never cared for West without the organ because all the songs get excessive and his playing is as overweight and overbearing as he is. But it gets even worse because Fats singing Felix's parts ain't worth a lick.

  • Corky Lang had a snap that even today can't be beat.. wonderful drumer@

  • Oh you have to agree.. he's an opera singer back there with those sticks... its not just fast paced... Corky is one of the few drum masters with the jazz touch (and timing)...

  • I wish Leslie West still used Sunn amps.

  • Mountain fans come over to thegreatfatsbies dot com and check out our videos. also post on our new forums! Nantucket Sleighride till you Die

  • yeah not bad but nothing beats the live 70s version on the road goes ever on steve knight's contribution on keyboards as well as felix of course all helped make it 17 mins of sheer bliss

  • Amen !!!!!!!!! The keyboards were so instrumental in the totality of the sond.....

  • The sheer genius of putting a traditional hornpipe through an electric guitar. I could listen to that tune until I died

  • I just picked up this album today. Great stuff.

  • lw needs ti listen to TRGEO to remember...when I saw them he could still play it

  • Hard to completely disagree, but you need a Les Paul Jr to pull off the tone you are thinking. Also, Leslie will never perform the same version of a song twice, doesnt matter how many times he plays his music over the years, it sounds like a new song every time. Rock on...

  • saw them live w/felix...in gr MI. still awesome

  • this is a great song there is an album called .the road goes ever on this song takes up one whole side 13 min 56 sec.

  • This is very good the way I like it full of Marshall tone, thanks for posting

  • did i just hear 'Beat It' and 'Black' in there somewhere? ~scratches head~

  • Les is just saying hello to Ed. Does this sort of thing all the time.

  • who's ed?

  • Eddie Van Halen, who played that riff on the "Beat It" single. Somewhere here on YT is a vid of VH inviting Leslie on stage at Jones Beach, Long Island, to jam on "Mississippi Queen."

  • Kiloscott, you are on the ball man. EVH played "Beat It" many a concert with michael jackson - back in the early/mid 80's. EVH and Leslie West are very close friends, and have great admiration for each other, as is witnessed in the Jones Beach performance you mention.

  • yea i saw that vid. awsome. but didnt know Eddie did the "Beat It" riff. cool

  • According to the guys in my local guitat place, he never got paid for it! Astonishing!

  • Les West is as good as ever - the real badgers, shame about that twat who thinks he can play the bass. Bring back Felix Pappalardi - even if he has been dead 25 years he's still the guv'nor

  • And all that sound coming from 2 Marshall amps... haha Show em how its done Leslie!!!

  • i saw them last year and they kicked ass...leslie talked to me while he was on stage during the show but i didnt get to see him fterwards but i met corky and richie and they were really nice guys...ROCK ON LESLIE!!!!

  • Me too.

  • My favorite Mountain song! YAY!

  • this is something eh?

  • They used to use part of this song on a political programme called Weekend World on BBC1 in the Seventies... MOUNTAIN ...A W E S O M E !

  • that's it! I love it!
