universal studios initially wanted BORIS KARLOFF, to play the lead here but director, the great JAMES WHALE, wanted an actor unknown to hollywood thus he selected CLAUDE RAINS a veteran stage performer. I'm going to dress up for the Invisible Man tomorrow for Halloween for when I help pass out treats at my house. I wanted to dress up today as it's my last year in high school and I wanted to have at least one big Halloween costume day, but it would have taken to long to apply and I was in a rush. Pity. The original idea was to go as The Wolfman but I could never do Pierce's make-up and there aren't many good masks currently. Still it should be fun although it takes wrap my face up right.
ill bet people in the theatres were like "AHHHHHHHH!!!!! OHHH MY GOODNESS!!!!!" HOW DOES HE DOOOO THAT????" nowadays we see someone on tv get butchered and we're all like " oh wow, that was lame"
It's not the most famous of the Universal films, but I really think it's one of the best. Claude Rains was brilliant invisible and in form. Admittedly you can see the form of the actor at times, but that's not to say it isn't a marvelous technique. It really shows how well a movie can do without CGI. Back then you had to be much more creative. And Claude Rains makes it perfect! That mad laugh is brilliant! It's my second favoite next to Mark Hamill's Joker. And I love the shirt xD.
I recently read the book and what's great is how faithfully they recreate the original characters and story - as they did later on with the ORIGINAL time machine film. The Guy Pearce one is ridiculous and strays a long way from the story. But this film is great! Thanks for posting this clip.
well, I've recently read the book as well. there are several inconsistencies. Dr. Griffin was supposed to be an albino, he never had a fiancee, there was no Dr. Cranley, and Griffin never killed Kemp (in fact, it was Kemp who pronounced Griffin dead at the end). But this is one of the rare instances when the movie is better than the book.
James Whale was a genuis, today all the studios can give us is shit like Hollow Man with Kevin Bacon! But yeah this does have some funny dialogue .Ha! Ha! "How's that for a hairbrush George Henry"!!!
The thing that I love about these old horror films is that if they had been made today, they would've been computer-generated, and it would've been painfully obvious. You watch a film like this from the 1930s and you wonder how the hell they accomplished that.
Claude Rains was probably the greatest supporting actor of all time.
Geez this is hilarious! I mean, I know it was meant to be a horror film, but the dialouge and expressions make it seem like a comedy. Love this movie!XD
i agree! this part where he's chasing teh cops wearing just a shirt, that part where he's singing 'pop goes the weasel', and that part where he's chasing that 1 lady towards the end and wearing just the cop's pants is hysterical. hes even skipping along and singing to add more humor!! XDXD
In my opinion, "The Invisible Man" is the best horror movie Universal Studios ever produced! A great film by James Whale, with amazing special effects by John P. Fulton, and a superlative performance by Claude Rains - only with his voice!!!
he was in his own category.....claude could act circle around todays actors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good as the effects are, the thing that really sells it are all his unnecessary Snidely Whiplash asides. "How's THAT for a hairbrush, George Henry?"

Though this film is 76 years old it´s still great and entertaining to see. Rains is brilliant.

Absolutely IncredIble! This is freakin' 1933! It still looks just as good as the CG stuff so popular today! Groundbreaking filmmaking. Astounding.
