I felt like I was watching those old black and white silent films from the late 1800's, of early flight. Case in point: 0:20 of this video- watch?v=iMhdksPFhCM - The people back in the 1800's at least had the sense to use three wheels.
What's scary about this is that, someone said "This thing should have two wheels," and five other people agreed. What the hell were they thinking? Two wheels? Seriously?? If they were trying to recreate man's early flying ambitions, they succeeded.
i am sure this design is based off the flying wing from the animated movie Nausica and the valley of the wind where Nausica, the main character, flys something very similar
a spring wire skid at each end of the wing tips would help keep it level and the help of a gyro in the controls would also help, of course if it was fly by wire. But really outriggers would help.
What needs to happen is for them to retain the exact appearance and uses of Nausicaa's glider. First of all, it should be light enough to carry above your head with both arms. Then, the bottom of the glider should NOT have any wheels, instead have two long handles that double as a landing support. Third, Nausicaa does NOT land via taxiing; she pulls the glider into a stalling position near ground and then she simply steps off and turns off the engine.
Should have proved the design with a flying model (RC). Easier to repair and make put aerodynamic band aids on. Band aids because of the effort to meet the artist's design for the cartoon. At least install some computer stablization. The cartoon version had outrageous power that can't be achieved yet. Still a neat idea design exercise.
If nothing else it needs a longer wheel-base...pushing the rear/main wheel back at least 12" will also help. But a tricycle gear would be best. Lovin' it regardless!!
the designer is either stupid or he never rode a bike. Two aligned tires can be controlled only by tilting on side and this does not fit to a wing vehicle
I've reviewed the scene and noticed that actually the front wheel of the plane is a steering one, like a bicycle. The problem could be the to hevy mass that make the driver unfit to use the natural biofeed-back that isa based on the light weight of the bicycle (comparet to the human body) and to the much nigger diameter of the wheel that, in addition, is not steered through a vertical axle yet a diagonal tha make the wheel turning when the bike tilt.
The designer should develope an electronic system tha detecting the tilting acts on the wheel in order to generate a centrifugal opposite force. A similar system can be adjusted to the mass and the limits of the wheel (would better increase diameter and tilt the axle) acting also throgh the flaps as well.
they managed to get it working wich is pretty cool! by adding a tricycle landing gear and maybe a conformal bubble canopy over the pilot instead of those bars it whould actually be a pretty safe and effective design! i'll totally buy one of those f they ever get that far with it!
not room for a lot of fuel for a jet with such a small airframe but then again it's meant to be a glider with jet only to assist, and take off so no problem.
@FLASHoverlord PS: don't focus on trying to get the to stand up on and ride the plane only by holding on to those bars like in nausicaa, this one part is fiction just not gonna happen in real life. :p
There's no need for two wheels on the main gear, when a wheel at either wingtip would suffice. Aside from the wingtip wheels, this guy couldn't control this thing without a motor during it's initial stages and now it's funny to see him trying to control it with a turbine engine installed in it. Can anyone say "DISASTER"?
I suspect that his neck muscles are sore and tired from holding his head up to see where he is going. For any length of a flight, if it ever gets airborne, a chin rest would be required.
Trying to stay true to the original is wonderful, but why does this thing not have tricycle gear? Instantly solve the taxi stability problem. I don't even want to know how they intend to control it. Function should definitely not follow form in this case - safety first, cool second.
@SRFirefox I agree with the safety form/function concern. That said, virtually all gliders of similar size I've seen have also had in-line (or single!) landing gear, so I think they've got bigger issues. The original (cartoon... um... yeah...) had no gear at all and just belly landed everywhere.
@OftenRatherAmused They don't belly land - she pulls the glider into a stall right above ground, so she can just step off the glider and power it down.
@SRFirefox - tricycle gear would likely be too heavy, requiring a larger engine and a redesign. simple wing outriggers would have been just as effective, designed much like that of the U2
Wouldn't it be easier to use 3 or 4 smaller turbines along with a gyroscope function to keep it leveled?
That way it can lift and land vertically. And after starting vertically, you should be able to turn the engines 135 degrees backward and forward for acceleration and brakes. And maybe 45 degrees left and right for turning while starting and landing.
The wings wouldnt have to be so long that way. And the pilot seat should probably look more like a jetski seat. And a small windshield is needed
it needs more control surfaces.. from what i can see, its got ailerons, but how does the pilot control pitch & yaw? needs a rudder & elevator!! o dear. that aircraft looks extremely unstable. good thing he just taxiid
Always over power, not under power, Your gonna need it to get out of tricky situations. Not all flights are flown with harmony music in the back ground.
For those confused, which seems to be the majority of the English posters here, this isn't intended to be an efficient design.
It looks like it does because it's modeled after a glider from a manga and anime called Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. They're defictionalizing it.
@DanFrederiksen it would be more fesiable to keep the wings verital as (folding-wings) until it reaches reasonable speed. When it reaches a reasonable speed for take-off one can put the wings in horizotal position to take-off.

@DanFrederiksen They are trying to stick to the original design of it in the movie. thus, jet on the inside, person riding on top. although 3 wheels would be better than 2, to help keep the balance on takeoff
The taxi test proves to me that there is a lack of stabilty in YAW! Increase the size of the lower vertical fins and add a pair of top vertical stabilisers!
Additionally you could add perspex fins along the sides of the top body handles. They will be hard to see (to maintain the design element) but would increase vertical wing area and improve YAW control. Good Luck! Looking forward to seeing more of this.
