  • I felt like I was watching those old black and white silent films from the late 1800's, of early flight. Case in point: 0:20 of this video- watch?v=iMhdksPFhCM - The people back in the 1800's at least had the sense to use three wheels.

What's scary about this is that, someone said "This thing should have two wheels," and five other people agreed. What the hell were they thinking? Two wheels? Seriously?? If they were trying to recreate man's early flying ambitions, they succeeded.

  • what a fucking let down.

  • you expect something much better from japanises

  • Death is the goal?

  • Why not put a tripod landing gear on it? How silly

  • @mryellow123: Good thing you weren't consulting for the Wright Brothers. Death comes for us all...

  • back to the drawing board. needs more thrust

  • i am sure this design is based off the flying wing from the animated movie Nausica and the valley of the wind where Nausica, the main character, flys something very similar

  • No chance to fly this sh**!! Why so stupid wing camber ?

  • Kamikasi... Bonzai!!!

  • it will take off....Just need a proper landing gear and more Power

  • Death trap.

Where is the triangulated airframe protecting the pilot?

Crashes happen. Fatality rate can be drastically cut with proper design.

  • @mryellow123 Don't be silly. He has a helmet, so he will be fine :)

  • Very funny

  • I love this project. but i think the engine haven't enough power and the structure is too heavy

  • The Silver Wing of Nausicaa!!!

  • @TheMediatore88 yes, Nausicaa!

  • idiots...will never fly

  • @mara25e if you have seen some of the older videos, It already has...

  • That guy is going to get killed flying hat coffin

  • Desperate to escape fuckashima the residents of Japan will stop at nothing

  • strike a bird and the motor explodes then blends your stomach . so cool tho.

  • No doubt kamikazi training for the future..

  • That is vag-tastic!

  • neet a copy

  • they never thought that cartoons don't abide the rules of gravity and aerodynamics!

  • @timmay301 you're absolutely right, that thing just came out from "nausicaa of the valley of the wind"

  • Fukushima.. Well, this is another kind of disaster xD

  • I must tell you that this scooter will take up far too much parking space in Tokyo!

  • I PITY THE LITTLE FOOL!

  • The instructions say it should have 3 wheels, oh well 2 should be enough. LOL

  • looks like vast underpower. more thrust is needed. Also needs tricycle landing gear for takeoff stability.

  • lol just keep those 2 always running and holding wings nar you

  • The flight was not a waste of time is ridiculous

  • a spring wire skid at each end of the wing tips would help keep it level and the help of a gyro in the controls would also help, of course if it was fly by wire. But really outriggers would help.

  • BTW, Dreams are dreams, but science that works is not called fiction for a reason. This will all end in tears....

  • Defictionalizing, interesting. I like it.

  • They should have made it tricycle geared. Doesn't seem safe at all. Hit the right cross wind and your in for disaster.

  • XD

  • If they just gave it three wheels, life would be so much easier.

Nausicaa's superhuman balancing abilities are not possible.

  • Death trap....

  • HAHAHA 2 WHEEL

  • You know, these people are incredibly smart. But why didn't they put a third wheel on it?

  • What needs to happen is for them to retain the exact appearance and uses of Nausicaa's glider. First of all, it should be light enough to carry above your head with both arms. Then, the bottom of the glider should NOT have any wheels, instead have two long handles that double as a landing support. Third, Nausicaa does NOT land via taxiing; she pulls the glider into a stalling position near ground and then she simply steps off and turns off the engine.

  • The inverted gull wind doesn't seem to help.

  • Should have proved the design with a flying model (RC). Easier to repair and make put aerodynamic band aids on. Band aids because of the effort to meet the artist's design for the cartoon. At least install some computer stablization. The cartoon version had outrageous power that can't be achieved yet. Still a neat idea design exercise.

  • .....back to the drawing board !!!!

  • as idea is perfect but what about reality?

  • if this flies ill be amazed.

  • Its the worst wing design as a professional i have ever seen !

  • It's a good thing they didn't get it to fly cos landing would be a bitch!

  • but does it blend?

  • I had expected a higher acceleration from a such a jet propelled light aircraft, but it's a nice try!

  • need one more wheel to stable control.

  • @jnnycliff Yes. My thoughts exactly

  • @jnnycliff or no more wheels, for that matter. Simply stall the glider!

  • Mané.

  • That's what I was thinking. Do not fly this plane into the air. Good god man..no.

  • well, it could be towed by a plane like a glider and test its flight properties, but for GODS SAKE DONT TRY IT WITH THE PILOT ON BOARD ...... |:

  • @eudaemonian think its to late lol

  • If nothing else it needs a longer wheel-base...pushing the rear/main wheel back at least 12" will also help. But a tricycle gear would be best. Lovin' it regardless!!

  • I admire the creativity of the Japanese.

  • the designer is either stupid or he never rode a bike. Two aligned tires can be controlled only by tilting on side and this does not fit to a wing vehicle

  • @tizbieyt It is acctually the other way around. With wings you can keep stable and turn. Almost all gliders in the world will prove you wrong.

  • @AirsportsDaniel

I've reviewed the scene and noticed that actually the front wheel of the plane is a steering one, like a bicycle. The problem could be the to hevy mass that make the driver unfit to use the natural biofeed-back that isa based on the light weight of the bicycle (comparet to the human body) and to the much nigger diameter of the wheel that, in addition, is not steered through a vertical axle yet a diagonal tha make the wheel turning when the bike tilt.

    continue

  • @AirsportsDaniel

    continued

The designer should develope an electronic system tha detecting the tilting acts on the wheel in order to generate a centrifugal opposite force. A similar system can be adjusted to the mass and the limits of the wheel (would better increase diameter and tilt the axle) acting also throgh the flaps as well.

    ciao

  • Are you crazy??? do you want dead ???!!! is so dangerous don't fly with this airplane!!! is pretty but very dangerous i think!

  • they managed to get it working wich is pretty cool! by adding a tricycle landing gear and maybe a conformal bubble canopy over the pilot instead of those bars it whould actually be a pretty safe and effective design! i'll totally buy one of those f they ever get that far with it!

not room for a lot of fuel for a jet with such a small airframe but then again it's meant to be a glider with jet only to assist, and take off so no problem.

you guys are awesome keep going!

  • @FLASHoverlord PS: don't focus on trying to get the to stand up on and ride the plane only by holding on to those bars like in nausicaa, this one part is fiction just not gonna happen in real life. :p

  • I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • they should've use a more powerful engine

  • 3 years old boy said : just need 3rd wheel

  • I think the craft is suffering from the torque of the turbine which is why when its attempting to fly, it begins tilting to the left.

Hmm, how about if they put in another engine but this time the turbine spins in the opposite direction? That might do the trick.

  • There's no need for two wheels on the main gear, when a wheel at either wingtip would suffice. Aside from the wingtip wheels, this guy couldn't control this thing without a motor during it's initial stages and now it's funny to see him trying to control it with a turbine engine installed in it. Can anyone say "DISASTER"?

  • two wheels on the main gear

  • use ther ruber man to pull you

  • tricycle gear please!!!

  • i bet its easy to build one of those

  • I suspect that his neck muscles are sore and tired from holding his head up to see where he is going. For any length of a flight, if it ever gets airborne, a chin rest would be required.

  • It's a "taxi test". If it got off the ground that would have been a fail.

  • Waverunner of the skies! Imagine flying one of these things down the grand canyon for vacation...

  • Lemme know when this gets off the ground, cause when it does, I want a turn. :3

  • Trying to stay true to the original is wonderful, but why does this thing not have tricycle gear? Instantly solve the taxi stability problem. I don't even want to know how they intend to control it. Function should definitely not follow form in this case - safety first, cool second.

  • @SRFirefox I agree with the safety form/function concern. That said, virtually all gliders of similar size I've seen have also had in-line (or single!) landing gear, so I think they've got bigger issues. The original (cartoon... um... yeah...) had no gear at all and just belly landed everywhere.

  • @OftenRatherAmused They don't belly land - she pulls the glider into a stall right above ground, so she can just step off the glider and power it down.

  • @SRFirefox - tricycle gear would likely be too heavy, requiring a larger engine and a redesign. simple wing outriggers would have been just as effective, designed much like that of the U2

  • you guys made a Nausicaa glider? AWESOME! Too bad it never left the ground. I hope you get it working, because that would be absolutely epic.

  • Building the Moeve was my childhood dream. I so wish it would fly. The engine power is definitely lacking compared to the movie.

  • This is beautiful. Good job, guys! I look forward to the glider flight.

  • Should have made a flying wing would have been simpler and easier to build and fly.

  • Wouldn't it be easier to use 3 or 4 smaller turbines along with a gyroscope function to keep it leveled?

That way it can lift and land vertically. And after starting vertically, you should be able to turn the engines 135 degrees backward and forward for acceleration and brakes. And maybe 45 degrees left and right for turning while starting and landing.

The wings wouldnt have to be so long that way. And the pilot seat should probably look more like a jetski seat. And a small windshield is needed

  • Why not to make a 3-point chassis?

  • it needs more control surfaces.. from what i can see, its got ailerons, but how does the pilot control pitch & yaw? needs a rudder & elevator!! o dear. that aircraft looks extremely unstable. good thing he just taxiid

  • @Kara0ki those are elevons

  • forget flying. it's a car!

  • they need jockey wheels on the wing tips, very small ones.

  • is that a moony in the hanger

  • Always over power, not under power, Your gonna need it to get out of tricky situations. Not all flights are flown with harmony music in the back ground.

  • the thing looks scary.. roll over to stretch your back and your spinning out.

  • Not quite as speedy as the one in the manga/anime, but it still kicks major ass. Wow.

Someone needs a link to an article explaining this thing to the people that haven't watched the anime.

  • FUCK..what a bout little wheels on the wings?? ... 5 kilos would harm it..

  • FAIL!!

  • For those confused, which seems to be the majority of the English posters here, this isn't intended to be an efficient design.

It looks like it does because it's modeled after a glider from a manga and anime called Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. They're defictionalizing it.

  • @LowLevelHellProject well said

  • 3x wheels and a bigger engine

  • this guy obviously doesnt know how to fly that thing right.

  • Wings are not long enough to hold that kind of load or you need more power in your engine.

  • 2 rear wheels

  • this is just ridiculous. a shame to real gliders

  • add a gyro for balance

  • wild! : )

mybe too much rolling resistance in the wheel.

  • @DanFrederiksen it would be more fesiable to keep the wings verital as (folding-wings) until it reaches reasonable speed. When it reaches a reasonable speed for take-off one can put the wings in horizotal position to take-off.

  • @micheal74rich fixed wing is ok but it should have exttra wheels and he should be inside the aircraft and the motor outside! not sure the jet is powerful enough either

  • @DanFrederiksen They are trying to stick to the original design of it in the movie. thus, jet on the inside, person riding on top. although 3 wheels would be better than 2, to help keep the balance on takeoff

  • @hunterking43 I see. what movie?

  • @DanFrederiksen Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki

  • The taxi test proves to me that there is a lack of stabilty in YAW! Increase the size of the lower vertical fins and add a pair of top vertical stabilisers!

Additionally you could add perspex fins along the sides of the top body handles. They will be hard to see (to maintain the design element) but would increase vertical wing area and improve YAW control. Good Luck! Looking forward to seeing more of this.

  • needs small wheel in wing tips!!

  • it looks the time is drawing near to fly the Mowe. but, jet engine doesn't look so powerful. Didn't you take full-power up?? I'm looking forward to seeing the scene of the flying with jet engine soon. I wish you good luck!! :D

  • I love it! I want one!

If I may suggest: Tricycle landing gear like Cesna 185. Or Harrier style landing gear on wing.

You're fighting two problems. 1, roll test and 2, balance. Roll test influenced by bad balance.

I love Miyazaki! I love Ghibli Studio! Good luck!!!

  • @kwanyx I agree, a tricycle landing gear layout would increase stability on the takeoff (and possibly on landing.) An other option would also be to assemble a track similar to that used by the Wright Brothers in their initial test flights.

  • @kwanyx or an arrange like the Me 163
