I think I posted this months ago on the same video, but ill say it again.. mike Macdonald is one of the best vocalists pop music has ever known and him singing this brilliant GB song is like jesus walking on water.
Since this was a B side, Grizzly Bear obviously has an appreciation for M. McD's voice and the alternate interpretation of their song. What's great about real artists is that they feel free to work with anyone they want to rather than letting someone else determine who or what is indie cool on any given day.
Think about how Quentin Tarentino singlehandedly made John Travolta cool all over again back in the day...there's talent there regardless of what any of us think of the taste level.
i'm a little less down on this song since finding out it was a b-side, but come on people! this is plain awful! just cause you remember who michael mcdonald doesn't make this an "amazing song cover". the original with ed's voice is so perfect and haunting - when i heard this on the radio it made me feel ill.
Never posted on youtube before. But this merits it. Amazing song. Both the original and this version. Grizzly Bear is genius, and that's no exaggeration.
My FAVORITE comments are from the people who think that somehow this song is blasphemous, implying that they have tapped into some plateau of musical wisdom that proves this version inferior (even though the fact that it is sung by a '70's geek' is pretty much their only argument). Amazing what a trained, baritone vocalist can do when featured on a track (and I don't even like McDonald!).
such a crazy uniqueness to this. i've never listened to mcdonald but the fact that grizzly thought to integrate someone so far from their genre shows how intuitive they are musically. his normally "goofy" voice has this awesome contrast and i think it just works out so well in its own way.
when I started listening to this, I wasn't too sure about it. The vocals seemed too high in the mix, and I still had the original vox ingrained in my head, but as the song progressed I really started to like this version. And the end vocals are really great.
I find it ridiculous that some of you think this is actually good. Maybe it's just the McDonald fan boys? Also, the harmonies do not complement him at all.
I'm not joking..this is the only song I've listened to all day. A full 18 hours. When the song ends I think maybe i should play another song, then I say to myself "okay, one more time..." then the cycle repeats itself. No joke. Maybe I'm crazy, but this song is like a drug to me. The Michael McDonald Version. I love the G.B version, but I love the soul of Michael McDonald, his ending vocal is SICK!!!
i am surprised by the # of people who like his vocals over the original... the vocals are really what makes grizzly bear for me, and michael mcdonald's version just cheapens the whole feel of the song.
although it's cool that he's listening to grizzly bear.
Hahah somebody who can honestly say they believe Michael McDonald ruined the Doobie Brothers can't be helped. But you are absolutely entitled to your opinion and I won't say you're wrong I just strongly disagree.
how can you say that the genius behind GB is not the person who wrote the first album and did everything himself (ed) or maybe you're only familiar with their newer music....
i love this version. michael mcdonald's voice is perfect for the music. i've heard the orginal several times and i am a huge grizzly bear fan. i think they rocked it on this one.
Prefer the original, but this is still pretty awesome. I think most of the people hating are just doing it because remotely liking anything related to Yacht-Rock is basically devil-worship for indie fans, and they need to affirm their authenticity.
Regardless, McDonald absolutely nails that outro brilliantly.
Even if this isn't a joke, I can't believe how many people here actually like this better than the original. I mean, seriously? The original vocals actually make sense with the song, with that other wordly feel that makes their music what it is (and awesome). Michael McDonald just turns this into a joke. Even if it really is him singing.
Absolutely not! It's the B-side to the Single of the original song. You know who Michael McDonald is right? You do if you know the Doobie Brothers or Steely Dan.

It's ok, I know you're probably still just hung up on that joke from 40 yr old virgin where they make fun of Michael McDonald. NO way!!!! Is this a joke???? Is this really MIcheal McDonald or an audio trick? LMAOROTFL!!!!! Even if it's a gag, it's an awesome one. This made my day.
The more I listen to it the more I like it. A convergence of hip song writing, retro recording style and powerful vocals from the past. GB really does ooze an old soul quality that no other young band has
