James C Ronning wrote this song for Burl Ives over 40 years ago. Neil just changed a few words. He would chage the lines today to a table made of songs. And yes as predicted Sir James' kids have forsaken him and his music. James is now very sick and all alone, yet none of his kids or his ex wife will even attemp to help him battle "AS". He is all alone and dying without a loving kin or friend to reach out a hand to help him He has tried suicide twice but some Angel comes along and prevents death.
A great song, albeit a slightly different version than the one from "Moods". "...and the legs were shaped with his hands. And the top made of oak and wood." - Beautiful!
I'm listening to this today since Neil Diamond was one of my mom's favorite artists, as well as one of mine, and I miss her so much on this Mother's Day.
Beautiful music, meaningful lyrics, a classic that is one of many that Neil Diamond has. I feel gratitude to be able to enjoy his and many, many others' work in this venue. Thank you for posting!
Neil Diamond was my star when I was young, I am glad that he is still alive and going strong. Dedicated to my boss Mr Peter Catterall of Middle Sabi by David Simango
