instead of wasting your time in decreasing growth in industrial world (which will lead to economic crisis) why don't you spend more time to promote family planning in Africa where people are breeding like rabbits instead of promoting it in industrial countries where we already have demographic and economic crisis
Highest Per capita CO2 emissions is still the highest in USA ! So, the whole system of lifestyle in usa is not at all climate friendly. But, it will be great, if this system can produce a low cost breakthrough clean technology which the whole world can adopt.
That's not a rare comment for a politician to make at all. It's like when Bush said that oil prices need to go higher because Americans are using too much energy. In fact all you have to do study social science and polities at any mainstream university, read the minutes of the major foundations (or just their literature--not as spelled out though), same with the UN's resolutions and mandates, and you'll see the same "humane" solutions of forced abortions, licensing, sterilization etc.
Because politicians and those types of positions are built upon using words like "historic" and "crisis" when in actuality population has always been increasing and as a result every generation lives better than the previous. There is nothing "new" about today, except the population is getting larger faster, but so is the standard of living, as long as governments don't impede on the process, and snatch the resources (the ability to produce resources), in order to substantiate their claim.
But if you do plan on this happening, then the world probably will be "overpopulated" (at least in the eyes of the centralized bureaucracies) and as a result, the production will stop (because you can't have totalitarianism and markets) and there will become a fixed stock of resources, which will need to be rationed, and people will need to die, similar to the example of the Soviet Union, but really all throughout history.
Rennoch, did you watch THIS clip? It includes a note about the omission. Fox misquoted to discredit Clinton, a subject for another day. I do find it very telling they felt that this quote out of context would reflect negatively on the former president. Personally I wish he had actually said we should slow our economy. It's a pipe dream to believe we can have perpetual economic growth AND reduce climate change and discontinue liquidation of the Earth's resources.
redirecting can help a lot too - he wants to change industries and the economy to renewable energies and advanced tech and similar - to move us to a growth economy that may one day free us from liquidation factor.
my hope is we last long enough to get into space, and then maybe we can come back and reapir the earth.
You REALLY need to view our documentary, Hooked on Growth, when it's finished. A growth economy cannot free us from liquidation. Good exercise to try: explain how more economic throughput can result in less liquidation of natural capital.
expansion to environments other then just this one? like gaining metals form the asteroid belts and moving a good chunk of the population to other places (yes, high tech spacey stuff, but i think we should be pushing for that goal a LOT more then we have been.) and developing molecular assembly tech to maximise resouce use with the absolutel minimum of wastage, possibly (thanks U.B.C.) with the ability to convert energy into materials like plastics?
I appreciate your honesty. I'm a dreamer, too. I dream of a world where we're not in such a frenzy to keep having MORE of everything, but instead are content, happier even, to live within our means!

you realize they clipped his speech to not include the other half of the statement which said he doesn't believe that would work?
they made it look like he was saying the exact opposite of what he did say - it's called quote mining.

some of us already are. in terms of volume, i have what i need.
what i want isn't more, it's better. a future for humanity beyond this rock.
i wouold say it's not growth, but consumerism that is causing the damage you so hate. in that regard, we would be in accord.
