@ChunkyTomster53 Shit's on the lot for me. Best Album he's done. I think it came out at the end of 97 or 98? Anyway it was only out for a month in the UK and it won Album of the year by NME. Desert Island album for sure. Peace.
@ChunkyTomster53 nah, it's definitely better than his recent stuff post-Geuro, but before that it's just like all quality, but each with their own thing, suitable for different moods and different feelings. Those five records from Mellow Gold to Sea Change each become my favourite Beck record after I hear them. It's really about your position at the time.
Mutations is in some ways my fav Beck album. Such great songwritin..."put a nickel in a graveyard machine."
If Beck can put a masterpiece together in 14 days like Mutations, then surely he can do it again. I like Modern Guilt but I wouldn't mind another Mutations record or maybe even a Sea Change.
Me too. Modern Guilt was like a serious album, but it lacked the... richness (?) of Mutations. It sounds like it took him a few years to do it, you know. Modern Guilt sounds like it didn't take as much skill as Beck is capable of.
Modern Guilt was Becks Worst Album, but thankfully that isnt saying much. it was okay, but doesnt live up to the Beck Standard. I like Becks more party side the best, like in Odelay and Midnite Vultures, but I also like the mellowness of Sea Change, with the great lyrics and stuff. I hope the next album is another Midnite Vultures!
I would hardly say MG was his worst. In fact, I'd rate it one of his greatest artistic achievements yet. Every song was short. They would reel you in and then end abruptly to keep you salivating for more. It was stripped down, but layered perfectly. It was mellow, but not too mellow.
I love everything Beck has ever done, but after Guero and The Information, it was time for change. Modern Guilt was the perfect left turn for Beck to take.
That being said, Mutations is my all time favorite.
I was a great album, but becks other stuff was much better, this was and average Beck album, which is still awesome, but I don't know I still was expecting more after Guero
Off the album that Pitchfork reviewers will be butting heads against for years to come. meh... they gave Sea Change a 6.9 so I shouldn't even mention them..
@anulhyf34 yeah but on the list of top records of the 2000's they put Sea Change above albums that got 9.0 and higher. They put it above an album that got a 10.0.
So I think it's more about the one person rather than the consensus.
Beck has made some definitive covers - but this isn't one. It's off possibly his best album, Mutations, and is his own. If you haven't heard it, I suggest you check it out. It was produced in 14 days - a day a song - and has a combination of blues, bossa nova, country, Indian music and folk that can only be described as 'Beck.'
I love this album but i would have to say Sea Change is his best. This one might be a close second. I dunno it's tough cuz they are both so great. The latest one "Modern Guilt" is really good too, and so is The Information. It's tough to pick but Sea Change & mMutations r the ones I listen to the most.
Beck and the blues go so well together! I don't know why he hasn't done more, but it's ok. He's such a dynamic musical personality. Sounds good whatever he plays.
@nick4man3 no, it's like I said...had to go google it to make sure :P but I've been playing the song with that tuning myself, initially without really knowing a name for it
Mutations shits over sea change and dare I say it Odelay

Man, shut the fuck up, Mutations was PRIME live-instrumentation Beck. Honestly, his best album since Mellow Gold.

not drop D actually if you look up the tabs, but never mind

This song is not in drop D.
It's in open C.
nick4man3 2 years ago
@nick4man3 Actually it's a bit different from open C, it's called the "Nick Drake" tuning: C-G-C-F-C-E. Whereas open C would be C-G-C-G-C-E.

@thesubstrate
Oh it's in Nick Drake tuning? My mistake. Good call, dude. (By the way, isn't Nick Drake tuning C-F-C-F-C-F?)
I was just reading an interview with Pete Holstrom from the Dandy Warhols. His new solo album has 3 songs in Nick Drake Tuning.
