Hilarious! Please please please keep posting the longer versions of clips. Luckily with him I could tell I liked his bit, but that's not often the case. :)
hey does anyone know where i can find a video for a comedian where its about "wanting someone" but not needing them? the comedian asks a girl in the audience if her man said " i dont need you" and she said it would be insulting but if he said "i dont need you but i want you blah blah blah" and then he says some nice stuff and she says she would keep him .i cant remember where i found it ? thanks
And I argue that what makes a joke truly funny is that it produces an unexpected segue to something unexpectedly important in life itself -- something that we never consciously realized mattered to us, but apparently does.
If I remember correctly, there's a quote by Sigmund Freud where he says that nothing is ever "just a joke" -- that we use joking as a veil to mask our sincerity, and to protect ourselves against angry retaliation against the messages we deliver.
but, for jokes to more easily be understood and for jokes that are made to have an added realism to them, what the comedian is talking about has to be related to a story or at least in this case a hypothetical example with some irony.
Freud the coke head? Freud who didn't understand women, and famously couldn't help irish people?
I'm not sure I trust his judgement.
What makes a joke funny(our best theory reckons) is the occurence of at least one of two things. Life as you know it to be, or life as you know it NOT to be.
How True vs That's Absurd, basically.
Which you find funnier depends on you. Sudden segues into conscious realisation don't really come into it for most people, although they may for you.
Well, I didn't know that. But I would say that there has traditionally been a certain amount of cultural pressure to make that quote a reality. However, just the other day I was reading a story about a woman named Rosalind Franklin, who really discovered the structure of DNA well before Watson and Crick, but her research assistant went behind her back and spoon-fed them her methods and results and, afterwards, Watson and Crick shared the Nobel Prize with the guy, and she got nothing.
Freud contributed a lot to the development of psychology; as such, he deserves recognition for that. But, he also got a lot of things wrong and was a mental case in his own right.
i don't miss working in a call-center... having my calls played back for 'training purposes' or for employee reviews or discrepancies (is that what the attorney called it? - j/k) *wink*
if you think that you could do better than that then you go and make a video and see how many stars you get... probably like 1/2... maybe... if you're lucky!

This guy is not only funny, the points he makes are ethically vital to society.
TheLogicJunkie 3 years ago 8
why is that ethically vital to society?
gushoodwink 2 years ago
Because he's talking about compassion for people in shitty jobs. Why isn't that obvious to you?

another comedian was talking about how an owl would be aggressive if raised in captivity...................
i don't think you understand that comedy isn't serious arguments reflective of life, but just jokes?

I'm not so sure Freud completely misunderstood women. Also, yes, there are things I find funny that other people don't.
TheLogicJunkie 2 years ago
You might not be sure, but I think it's fairly established.
He once said "Women oppose change, receive passively, and add nothing of their own,"
Which is clearly nonsense.
