It's not to say i'm some rambo but when you've got a fucking zombie (or half dead possessed people with rage) coming so fast towards you (most likely to eat you up) and you've got a gun in your hand you just don't think about anything. Reasons why he probably didn't shoot:

1)They're not zombies.

2)He had auto gun, it doesn't have enough power to take off any body part.

3)There was a fence nearby, he would've closed it and everything would be good.

This movie was alright, but miles, miles and miles below the first one. What made the first one scary was all the mystery, and the implication of supernatural elements. When they actually explain it and go into it all, it often just seems silly. That being said, it's still a perfectly good, but not great, horror movie.
