A desperate nation could threaten on militarily weaker nation with nuclear weapons in order to plunder its resources. The idea might be that the rest of the world won't step in and stop them. I could see that logic too.

No nation will launch multiple nukes today. Everyone understands the logic of mutually assured destruction. The only instance in which a nation might use a nuke is in a limited sense- for example, to stop an advancing army. Would every nation pull their triggers and cause worldwide destruction if one nation used a single nuke in a defensive fashion? Probably not. The best bet would be not to fire off a nuke and find out.
I'd be more worried about terrorists acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Having a stockpile makes them think twice about attacking, since we can return their offense a thousand times over. It's the knowledge of the intimidating power bombs hold that prevented their use and why the Cold War didn't become WW3, although it was uncomfortably close!

@Noodles37UK You have to understand, that whether you like it or not, the bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki actually saved lifes, historians agree a conventional invasion of Japan would have cost more lifes, both American and of course Japanese, than the two bombs that were dropped on them. Now I don't think America should be commended for dropping nukes on Japan, but it was a lesser of two evils, and MUCH more justified than the UK's incendiary bombing of Dresden.....
