(4give me, only have 500 character limit, thus my response expressed in parts but notice I have managed to post it in chronological order so it can be read down rather than backwards)
Thats precisely the question the film was designed to invoke. Its taken along time for someone to actually ask it; so thankyou!
Unfortunately I cant provide a descriptive & coherent alternative model, I can only comment. Personally I beleive the time has come for us to start thinking creatively of how we can design a new alternative within capitalism that allows us to be sustainable. Otherwise we may very well have to start thinking of radical alternatives that incorporate the lessons we have learnt from the past and include our scientific and technological advancements in the process.
With more people educated than ever before across developed and even developing nations, why is it that so many remain so apathetic to politics? Why are we so intensely focused on our short term personal wellbeing? Why are so many of us incapable of relating todays actions to tomorrows consequences? Do we not see that our individually enjoyed lifestyles characterised by excessive consumerism, material accumulation and gross wastefulness will, in time, lead to our collective destruction?
Personally I advocate a more aware and active citizenry. I hope enough people will recognise this moral obligation that calls us to action and participate more within their local , state and national politics I hope they will engage the wider population in awareness and political campaigns and openly challenge our somewhat complacent leaders who are sadly obsessed with policies that will win them the next election.
We also have, not only power as citizens but also as consumers and since the business community has indeed become one of the most dominant institutions exercising extraordinary influence in our lives today; we should each recognise that a business cannot survive without a consumer. Therefore it is within our collective power to define and demand sustainable and ethical business standards/practises, which inturn will shape and define the world we live in.
Gentleman, there is a great alternative out there and it is as descriptive and coherent as you would like it to be. Please look into The Venus Project. The Zeitgeist Movement, made famous by the Zeitgeist Trilogy of films, advocates the fundamental facet of The Venus Project weaning us away from capitalism in a monetary society to a science and technology based society in a Resource Based Economy.
@chrisrandall84 Thanks Chris, I will look into it.
