I got into Septic Flesh´s unique underworld when I first listened to mystic palces in late ´94 and i was very surprised positively due their aggression,meaningful and historical lyrics, brutal vocals and inspiring arrangements!

this song is amazing - In my opinion, besides a few songs, Sumarian Daemons and Communion were not good albums. Either the compositions were awkward or the songs were too "brutal" and lacked atmosphere. the next album is going to have a real orchestra and peter tagtren producing - so much for a return to the atmospheric aesthetics utilized on the first several albums - I will surprised if this is any good.

@insidethefall78 it's a difficult call really. the early albums had more sophisticated melodies, but the last two records are more 'textured', at least S.D anyway, and brutal in a way that their older material never was, and let's face it, part of the reason for that was the crappy production, because there were obviously brutal moments on M.P.O.D, Esoptron and T.O.W that had almost zero impact due to the poor sound quality.

@lamentate07 What you call poor sound quality, I call a sound that was unique to the band and perfect for delivering their darker, sort of obscure and atmospheric sound. It's kind of like comparing Entombed's left hand path to a modern Behemoth album, of course Behemoth will sound more brutal on the surface but for songwriting and that creepy atmosphere, Left Hand Path will have a bigger impact.

@insidethefall78 i agree the sound added atmosphere and a sense of mystery, esp on Esoptron, but i meant poor by 'conventional' standards, not by my own necessarily. i quite like the murky sound of albums ike Esoptron.

@insidethefall78 on the other hand, it's true this quest for 'brutality' has somewhat narrowed the scope of their music. S.D was more balanced than Communion, and i think the problem with that is the sound was a little too spacious for its own good, lending the impression that the songs weren't really connecting the way they ought to.

@lamentate07 Well put, I never considered SF as a death metal band, I always thought they mixed up doom, death, heavy and gothic metal rather well to where no musical style stood dominant. On the new stuff I hear death metal on most songs and on a few I hear gothic metal. I just feel that they have really lost their sound and their songwriting skills.

As for your point about ackwardness, there were plenty of moments like that on O.Wheel too imo. overall i think the use of orchestral elements is more fluid now than it was in the past, but there are still strange moments that don't work(chris's solos, for example, sound really out of place on Communion, and often did in the past too, but moreso on the last record than before).

Also, the melodic songs like Infernal Sun and Narcissus are a little too simplistic.
