im in love with your natural hair.....but with me,being almost a year off of a relaxer, since being natural i havent done anything just oiling and moisturizing, and wearing my quick weave system....i decided not to use no heat at all...not even blow drying...my relaxed hair was long down my back and it was heat damage to the point that i could only wear my hair in a wrap...no curls at all...
@deedeesnicks Thanks so much. I really dont like the idea of using heat on my hair at this time, but i really have to make sure my scalp is dry during these months or else my head/neck will ache real bad. I cant wait til spring/summer gets here alredy. I wish you well on your journey, and thanks again for commenting. Happy Holidays to you.
Thanks for sharing. For some reason these are some of the things I was doing in the beginning of becoming natural (today marks two years) and I don't know why I stopped, but I will be tweaking your regimen and doing more PS in my hair for now on. Thanks again!!
Hair envy.....lol, but seriously your hair is very beautiful. I remember watching your BC vid and your hair omg look at the growth. I want to get like you. What is your current regimen if any (please share). Girl I just love your hair. Be blessed!
@tashamont Awww thanks so much. I wash with shea moisture reteintion shampoo, or co wash with v05 and deep condition with herbal essanse hello hydration. Then i use silk elements mixed with oils as a leave in and moisturize with a shea butter mixture i make with oils, and then i twist my hair once a month and usually leave it in for 3 and a half weeks to a month, and thats it. I moisturize like every three days or when it feels dry.
I think heat protectant is really important. It is also important to not use heat more than once during the week. (Don't apply heat to dirty hair due to uneven protection.) Also, some people's hair are just more susceptible to heat damage. For example, someone with a finer hair texture. I
Personally, I think people blow this way out of control. Number 1# Use heat protection, that is key and for me, I've had it professional done and pressed it myself. I do not get it either. And you see people who have never had it straightened before screaming heat damage on their first press
@bionca22 Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your views on this matter. I'm so thankful for your suggestions. I hope my experience is a success. I cant wait to share it with you guys. Thanks again.
the last time i flat iron my hair, i used a leave in i mixed up myself and IC fantasia heat protectant in the pink bottle and my hair came out fine and it reverted back fine.
@BeautyStartsWithin Thanks so much for sharing your information and experience with me. It was truly helpful. I hope my experience goes well. Take care and thanks again.
I suggest stretching your hair with braids or retwisting your hair. I usually get very good results from re twisting my hair. Or use the cool setting to blow dry your hair.
@nubiantres That sounds like a great idea, however i may have to use the medium setting due to the coolness on my head may cause me to ache a lil. Im going to make sure i get me some grapeseed oil as well. Thanks so much for all your suggestions and advice. I reall do appreciate it.
girl your hair is long, soft and beautiful!! Be careful with the straightening. I can't wait for the video. I bought some of the silk elements conditioners today from sally's. they are affordable. Thanks for the tip.
@msladynatural00 Your so welcome. I love that stuff when i mix it with oils. Let me know how you like it. My nephew tried it this weekend and he really likes it too.
I realized from Youtuber Chakakhanian that I never knew the real curl pattern from my childhood because my mom straightened my hair once or twice a week so my hair was heat trained, now it's curly. I've straightened my (in 1yr natural) hair about 3 times, no heat damage. I think people who go extremely straight or keep flat ironing the ends of their hair get heat damage...it's usually at the ends. I think too much heat and no heat protectant=heat damage. I used chi n grapeseed oil.
@Bobbi705 Thanks so much for sharing your experience with me. I'm really thinking of using grapeseed oil as well. For now i'll be just really focused on the blow outs but i would like to give the straightening thing a try once in a while down the road just for a change. Thanks again.
shea butter has a low boiling point so i wouldn't use that as a heat protectant. grapeseed oil's boiling point is pretty high. so is almond's and avocado's. mineral oil's is crazy high so that is probably why the pressing greases of back in the day worked so well against heat damage. good luck!
@NaturalSoleil Thanks so much for all your advice and information you've shared with me. I am truly greatful for you taking time out to address my concerns.
I don't know the answer to that. I would like to know about the flat ironing with pertroleum part though, cause I did see someone use Dax on a blog and it looked great. I'll have to reaserch it more. As far as blow drying, you'll be alright on that. Just use a heat protectant and dryers now are more advanced and dry faster. Flat Irons, hmmm. I think it depends on the heat setting. Everyone wants to go bone straight but I'm more concerned at the temperture setting vs the heat protect max temp.
I cud be wrong, but I think the results of heat damage is not only straight pieces of hair, I think it's also broken off pieces and thinner hair. Also, I think that one reason we don't remember heat damage is that we didn't know what to look for. I remember hair being easier to straighten, the more often one straightened it. Back it the day, we called that trained hair. Today, I think many consider that to be heat damage.
@maximuslyricus I agree wholeheartedly with this. From what I recall, my hair always reverted back when wet because of my thick, coarse texture. No permanent straight hairs.
But my hair never grew past a certain point due to breakage and some areas smelled burnt, so the damage was there in my case. Heat damage may look different on each head and can many forms.
@nerdynap Forgot to add...the petro/mineral oil acted a protectant. No moisturizer was used before the press or during the week. So the breakage resulted from loss of elasticity in the strands.
@maximuslyricus Thanks so much for stopping by as always i really am greatful for you taking time out to share your experiences and knowledge with me.
I that it's twofold: the "hairdressers" knew what worked for natural hair because the dealt with t all the time and pressing grease isn't as bad as we think toay. My hair loves that Blue Magic, especially in the winter. Makes my blowouts last longer so I can bun my hair and workout without incidents. Good discussion!
Whoa, that's interesting. I made a trip down memory lane to my hair straighten days and your right, heat damage wasn't even apart of the equation ( from what I could remember). Our hair always reverted back. The product of choice the stylist or my mom would use, I'm sure was grease or some type of hair press. The funny part is--I can't remember how our hair was dried or if it was still damp when they straightened it...lol. Won't ever forget that smell though, nice vid.
I use heat on my hair more often than not. I diffuse my wash n' go, I use a concentrator nozzle to stretch the length of my curls, & I have straightened my hair quite a few times. All of this and I have 0 heat damage. None! I DO NOT promote the use of heat, but should you choose, the key is proper preparation. Moisturizing cleansers & conditioners, Kimmaytube's leave in, and IC Hair Polisher Heat Protector Straightening Serum are what I use and the results are consistent with no damage.
Great video, i have been natural for 10 years and havent had a press in gong on 5 years and wanted to do something different/ switch it up and get it pressed in 2012 but m afraid because the last stylist i had left me with so much heat damage had no choice but to do another big cut. I love my curly hair and keep it protected 80% of the time. I wouldn't mind doing it myself but I don't know how to do it but afraid to trust someone else! Please make a video to let us know how it turns out!
@MsRedChick84 Thanks so much. Sorry to hear about your unpleasent experience with the heat damage. I'll be sure and share my experience with you guys when i decide to give it a try. Im glad you commented.

Also roller setting or doing braid out, or banding stretch before ironing will enable less direct heat.
